F irst Reading: Acts 2:14a, 36-41

In this first reading, the apostle Peter accuses his fellow Jews of complicity in the death of Jesus in order to prod them into accepting his message. Guilty of denying Jesus himself, Peter seeks to have his listeners repent and be baptized in Jesus’ name into a renewed relationship with God.

S econd Reading: 1 Peter 2:20b-25

Our second reading, a portion of the letter attributed to Peter, is addressed to those who are in pain. Suffering believers are told to put their trust in the Shepherd who, in his time of suffering, trusted in God.

G ospel: John 10:1-10

This passage from the Gospel of John is thought by some to be a sample of the preaching heard in John’s community. Jesus is pictured as a Good Shepherd who guides his sheep to safe pasture.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of May 3

May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY

“ . . . the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out . . .

“I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture . . .

I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly." (John 10: 1-10)

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is also called Good Shepherd Sunday because we read from the 10 th chapter of John’s Gospel in which Jesus reveals that He is the Good Shepherd. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

Your teenager messed up — missed curfew, had a train-wreck of a report card, caught with something he or she shouldn’t have had. So you grounded them. Their social life was put on “pause” for the next month or so, giving them time to think about their responsibility to be safe, to focus on their school work, to realize that they are not kids anymore.

Grounded . . .

It’s been more than a year since Boeing grounded its 737 Max jetliner. The 737 was one of the most widely used aircraft in the world —until the world’s aviation safety authorities ordered the plane grounded after two crashes of 737s that killed 346 people. This is not just a matter of making a mechanical or maintenance fix — the 737 Max won’t fly again until technicians can rewrite the code in the flight computer giving pilots greater control of the plane.

Grounded . . .

A professor insists that her MBA students spend as much time talking about business ethics and corporate responsibility as they do studying how to make and manage money. They study not only management and financial strategies but the economic and social impact of those strategies on consumers, children, families, the communities. Smart businesses, she believes, are grounded in the principles of justice and social responsibility.

Grounded . . .

A technician carefully grinds a piece of glass to the precise curvature and then polishes the glass to create a lens: a lens that might be used to study microbes, search the heavens — or enable a grandparent to see his grandson or a little girl to see the words in her book.

Grounded . . .

For most of us, “grounding” is or has been a negative and punitive, often limiting our freedom and options — but the opposite is true. To be “grounded” is to find our footing in what we believe is right and just; to

restore the balance between our individual wants and needs and our responsibility for the common good; to stop and reset our direction, fix what is broken and change what is not working. As followers of Jesus, we realize that our lives must be “grounded” in the Gospel principles of compassion, peace and justice, if we are to realize the meaning and purpose of our lives. This Easter season is a time to “ground” ourselves again in the Risen Christ, the “gate” to God’s Kingdom, the Shepherd who gathers us as his Church, the people of God. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

SAVED FOR ABUNDANT LIFE

If we are very busy—and so many of us are—we may never stop and take a look at our deepest needs. If we do not recognize our needs, we may not recognize that we need a savior, the Good Shepherd who leads us.

Adults: How do I take stock of my life and come to understand my deepest needs and, ultimately, my complete reliance on the Lord?

Children: Where does Jesus, the Good Shepherd, lead me and guide me in my life?

A Family Perspective: Even though we have less experience with sheep and shepherds today in our society, we can still identify strongly with the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and as the gate for the sheep. Psalm 23 remains a popular and favorite psalm for prayer. In the image of the Good Shepherd, we know ourselves to be protected and cared for by a loving God. As your family gathers, ask what each person knows about sheep and shepherds. Recall that shepherds and sheep have a close relationship. Sheep will only follow their own shepherd; they recognize his voice and will not follow a stranger. The shepherd's job is to protect his sheep. In some ways, the relationship between the shepherd and his sheep is like that of a parent and child. Read together this Sunday's Gospel, John 10:1-10. Talk about how Jesus tells us that he is the gate for the sheep. The sheep enter the protection of the sheepfold through the gate. In Jesus we find protection and abundant life. Conclude by thanking Jesus for being our Good Shepherd and by praying today's psalm, Psalm 23.

PRAY FOR OUR ESSENTIAL WORKERS

Our book of intentions is always open for parishioners to write the names of those for whom they would like us to pray. At this time, so many of our family and friends are not able to stay at home during this pandemic, and are going to work each day, performing essential duties that allow us to stay at home. If you would like to add a name (or names) of an essential worker to our book of intentions, please email us, and we will add the names and pray for them at each Mass.

If you are an essential worker, please accept our gratitude and prayers. We thank you for your courage.

PRAYER TO END THE COROAVIRUS O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother Mary,

We, your children of every nation, Turn to you in this pandemic.

Our troubles are numerous; our fears are great. Grant that we might deposit them at your feet,

Take refuge in your Immaculate Heart, And obtain peace, healing, rescue,

And timely help in all our needs. You are our Mother.

Pray for us to your Son. Amen.

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN TO

“UPLIFT YOUR PRIEST”

The clergy have been playing a pivotal role during the pandemic by offering continued spiritual support and prayers to those in need. There are priests who’ve ignored potential risks to their own lives to ensure the hospitalized faithful receive the sacraments . There are creative clergy who’ve come up with innovative ways to bring the sacraments and continue giving spiritual support while normal church services are suspended. And there are priests willing to be incarcerated to make sure those in prison can still receive spiritual guidance.

In an effort to offer our worthy priests a boost, Vocation Ministry, an international organization aimed at equipping dioceses and parishes to promote vocations, based in Houston, Texas, has come up with an initiative to help us support our priests during these difficult times. In a nationwide first, the “Uplift Your Priest”

campaign is a wonderful opportunity for

parishioners to let their priests know how much they are appreciated. With simple gestures, the laity can offer support to these heroic men who not only have the task of ministering to their parishioners as best they can in the current circumstances, but must find ways to maintain their churches, and take care of themselves.

Rhonda Gruenewald, the founder of Vocation Ministry shared in their press release: “Our priests are in a vulnerable position like never before. They need to know that we are behind them. They need to be ‘uplifted!’”

There are many easy ways to do this. Simple gestures such as having a meal delivered to them, sending your priest a spiritual bouquet, praying a Rosary in their name, making masks to help protect them as they go out to minister to others, sending notes of gratitude or encouragement, getting kids to make some colorful drawings, or even writing a prayer dedicated to your priest.

“We hope by offering concrete and practical ideas that we can mobilize Catholics everywhere to uplift their priests and be a source of encouragement during this stressful time,” Gruenewald points out.

Whatever action you are able to carry out will surely let your priest know that you are thinking of them, and they are in your prayers as much as you are in theirs.
