Welcome to The QuestBy Debra Tosch, Executive Director

In 1996, the Search Dog Foundation devel-oped a model for Canine Disaster Search:recruiting rescued dogs, pairing them with fire-fighters, and giving them professional ongo-ing training. The program has been very suc-cessful, and our recruitment and trainingmethods have been adopted nationwide.

In recent years our challenge has been to raise the bar for trainingand disaster response in the U.S. In 2007, SDF initiated several newprograms to meet this challenge. In the area of Canine Recruitment,we created a Bark Force to help find dogs, Prep Kennels forimproved evaluation, and an enhanced training program forLifetime Care Families. With respect to training, we began a CaseManagement program for each team, a Rapid Response functionto quickly address training issues, and a Handlers’ Fund to provideequipment and travel grants to our teams and Training Groups.

I hope you enjoy reading about these new programs in this year’sedition of The Quest. On behalf of the staff, our Board of Directors, and our amazing Search Teams, THANK YOU for making it allpossible!

DEPLOYMENTS – SDF Search Teams responded to 9 disasters:landslides, hurricane, tornado, flood, building collapses andmissing person searches.

CANINE RECRUITMENT – In 2007, SDF’s Bark Force was born. There are now 32 volunteers who visit shelters and breed rescuegroups in search of canine candidates. During the year, 33 shel-ters and breed rescue groups assisted SDF in locating 190 poten-tial search dogs. Of these, 22 will be partnered with handlers in2008.

LIFETIME CARE – 19 Lifetime Care families have been part-nered with search dog candidates who for various reasons did notcomplete SDF’s training program.

SEARCH TEAM MILESTONES – 17 SDF Search Teams passedextremely challenging tests administered by Department ofHomeland Security/FEMA Task Forces.

SDF’S FAMILY OF SUPPORTERS – SDF was honored toreceive generous financial support in 2007: 1,006 Individuals madetheir first gifts of support; 117 Foundations and Corporations pro-vided grants and sponsorships; 48 Volunteers in the Ojai officeand across the country assisted in all aspects of our program; 8New Sponsors donated $10,000 or more.

GUARDIAN ENDOWMENT FUND – In 2007, we welcomed13 new Endowment Guardians who included SDF in their estateplans, bringing the total number to 91 estate donors. OurEndowment Fund increased by 40%, reaching almost $1millionin cash contributions.

STATE & NATIONAL GIVING CAMPAIGNS – In 2007, SDFraised over $65,000 from workplace giving through the CombinedFederal Campaign (CFC), the Calif. State Campaign, the UnitedWay, and employer matching gifts.

“FUELED BY NUTRO” – SDF is proud to announce a new part-nership with Nutro Products, Inc., which is now the official petfood of the Search Dog Foundation.

Greetings from the Chairman of the Board,Upland Fire Chief Mike Antonucci2007 was a very good year for the Search Dog Foundation. The hard workand dedication of our team has been essential in moving the mission for-ward. Major accomplishments included the formation of the “BarkForce,” which increases our ability to find qualitycanines for the program. We also secured proper-ty for the future “National Training Center,” whichwill be a model for all disaster canine training in theU.S. We said goodbye and thank you for a jobwell done to two retiring Board members, JimCombs and Merilee Eaton, and welcomed twonew members who will continue the vision, ShariSkinner and Chris Wright. As Board Chair, I wishto extend my sincere thanks for the support and dona-tions received from our friends across the countrywho are helping to fund this life-saving program.

SDF Search Teams Find a Home

SDF Founder Wilma Melville had a vision: that one day the Foundationwould have a permanent home. It would be a place where rescued dogscould become rescuers at the hands of highly skilled trainers. It would givesearch dog handlers from across the country the opportunity to receiveadvanced training in specialized simulated disaster sites found nowhereelse in the U.S. It would enable our teams to achieve the highest deploy-ment skill level in the nation.

In 2006, the McGrath’s, a pio-neering farming family whoseroots in Ventura County goback to the early 19th Century, brought Wilma closer to herdream. The family made itpossible for SDF to purchase a38-acre parcel of land in thefoothills of Santa Paula, anhour north of Los Angeles. Itwas the largest gift SDF had everreceived.

After much research, we determined that a larger property would be need-ed to accommodate the kennels and runs, SDF offices, and trainingsites. In July 2007 the neighboring parcel became available for purchase. At 125 acres, this parcel is everything we had hoped for. We are pleasedto announce that in early 2008 SDF sold the original land, and closed escrowon the new parcel: the future site of the National Training Center.

Sean McGrath, whose family made the land acquisition possible: “A common thread in our family history has always been the value anddevotion of dogs. Whether working, or as sport or sofa partners, theirplace in our lives has always been as part of the family. The courageousSDF Search Dogs are even more than our family—they’re our heroes. Andwe’re honored to play a part in their lifesaving mission.” His mother, Mrs.Frank McGrath, Jr., adds simply, “It was the right thing to do, and theright time to do it.”

Debra Tosch, SDF Executive Director:“There’s no way to thank the McGrath family enough. They have givenSDF, and America, an extraordinary gift. It’s not just about consolidatingour training facility, offices and search sites into one location. It’s aboutgiving all the nation’s canine handlers a precious resource, enablingthem to achieve higher skill levels than ever before.”

The efforts of Canine DisasterSearch Team Marshia Hall and herpartner Trapper were critical inbringing closure to a tragic event, assuring rescue workers and com-munity members that no one wasleft behind in the wreckage.

Deployment Report by Marshia Hall,Temple Terrace Fire

On December 6, 2007, search and rescue teams across the state of Floridawere called to assist the Jacksonville Fire Department with a search andrescue involving a structural collapse. Parts of a six-story parking garagehad gone down while under construction. A worker said that parts of thegarage went down like dominos—a plume of smoke could be seen fromacross the river. Twenty-three people who had been working at the sitehad to be rescued; nineteen were transported to nearby hospitals; twowith serious injuries.

When the dust settled, one person was still missing. I had just returnedfrom training in Miami when I received the call, and my gear was still inthe car. I put Trapper and Shade in the car and set off for the disaster site.

Six K-9 teams responded. We assessed the situation and determined whateach dog was best suited for: who tunneled best, who wouldn’t jump offthe cantilevered floors, whose weight wouldn’t cause a secondary collapsein weakened areas.

Trapper had to climb multiple ladders to get to some areas. There waslots of rebar, broken and protruding, or stretched to its limit and waitingto snap. Concrete walls and lumber dangled precariously over rubble anddeep voids and the structure shifted as we searched.

It was extremely noisy due to cranes removing debris and generatorsoperating tools and lights. They needed to call for “all quiet” when theK-9s were on the pile, in order for us to hear. Everyone stopped and lis-tened, hoping to hear one of them bark—a sign that someone had beenfound alive.

At one point Trapper stepped off a ladder onto a piece of plywood (helikes to choose his own route), and it slid all the way back down to thebottom of the pile. He rode it like it was the teeter totter he trains on. He

just waited until it stopped, looked up and got back on the ladder andclimbed again. He went right on like he hoped nobody was watching!

We worked around the clock for two days, with the fire department doingselective breaching and debris removal. Although the dogs showed inter-est in some areas, they did not alert. In the dark of night we hid peoplefor the dogs to find. This gave the K-9s a reward for good work and anincentive to go out and do it again.

On the third day, two dogs that search for cadavers were brought in andimmediately alerted. Rescue workers carried out the body early Saturdayafternoon, nearly 60 hours after the collapse. The rest of the search teamsstayed in rescue mode and continued searching until that victim could beidentified as the missing person. Once he was identified, the operationturned into one of recovery.

The Jacksonville Incident Commander came and thanked us for our quickresponse, for our efforts and a great job. Trapper, Shade and I headedback to Orlando and were able to attend my team’s training the follow-ing day.

I was VERY proud of my K-9s! Their excellent performance was due toour constant training. I want to thank Trapper’s Puppy Raisers at GuideDogs of America, Judi Gomez and Miguel Ola; his Guardians, Janice andMichael Torres; his new sponsor, Allstate Insurance-Florida Region; andall the Search Dog Foundation supporters who help to make this happen!

The Bark Forceby Karen Klingberg, SDF Canine Manager

It doesn’t just take a special canine to be a Disaster Search Dog. Ittakes an extraordinary one. Scouring shelters and breed rescue groupsthroughout the Western States is a daunting task. Out of 190 caninestested in 2007, only 22 had the athleticism, drive and focus need-ed in a disaster search dog. A grant from Jeff Pepper (an AmericanKennel Club Judge and SDF Sponsor and Guardian) has enabled SDFto create the Bark Force to address this challenge. Since Octoberof 2007, our 32 Bark Force volunteers have already increased theefficiency and success of our recruitment program. The BarkForce is responsible for half of the dogs currently in training atSundowners. Hats off to this extraordinary group of men andwomen for the wonderful work they are doing!

Bark Force in ActionRowdy’s StoryBy Karen Klingberg, SDF Canine Manager

Sometimes the path from shelter to Search Dog isan arduous one, with many dedicated peoplehelping along the way. When a rescued dog con-cludes the first 30 days of training at SundownersKennels, it’s cause for celebration! This is Rowdy’sstory: from neglectedstray to search dogin the making.

Last August I wastraveling the length ofCalifornia in search ofpotential search dogs. One stop was atCalaveras CountyHumane Society inLodi, where EllenEndres brought to my attention a young dog shehad in mind for our program. Unfortunately, during our evaluation the dog showed NO toy-drive,so I thanked Ellen for trying, and told her hewould make a nice pet for someone.

Ellen couldn’t find a home for the dog. She sent himto San Francisco SPCA where more people wouldsee him, but still no one was interested. The SPCAstaff was concerned that he was developing anunhealthy possessiveness with his toys. They

returned the dog to Ellen, who sent him to MargaretBlair of Twin Cedar K-9 for obedience training.

Unaware of SDF’s earlier attempt to recruit this dog,in October of 2007 Margaret called us to say shehad a potential search dog. SDF trainer SharonWolfsen visited Twin Cedar K-9 and determinedthe dog was definitely SDF material! She broughtthe dog to Sundowners Kennels, and it was agreedhe was a keeper.

And so this young and energetic Border Colliemix, now appropriately named “Rowdy,” began hisSearch Dog training. When Ellen called Margaretand found out the dog had been placed with aSearch and Rescue group, she called SDF and con-firmed that the same dog that had failed his eval-uation in August was now past his first 30 days oftraining at Gilroy! In February of 2008, Rowdy wasteamed with Dave Stoddard of Sacramento MetroFire, and will be ready to go home with him in April.

As the person who identified Rowdy for us this timearound, Margaret has received the first payment of$100 towards the $1,000 to be awarded whenRowdy completes training and attains FEMA cer-tification partnered with Dave.

Our thanks to Ellen, the folks at the San FranciscoSPCA, our intrepid trainers SHARON, KATE &PLUIS, and MARGARET, for bringing this awesomedog to SDF! WAY TO GO ROWDY!!!

Lifetime Care ProfileJudy & Clay PhelpsBy SDF Volunteer Emery Walker – Ojai, CA

Early last summer SDF received a call from theCorning Animal Shelter in Northern California.Calvin, a handsome Black Lab Mix, had beenpicked up as a stray and looked like a candidatefor our program. After six weeks at the shelter,Calvin’s time had run out: he was scheduled foreuthanasia, and SDF was his last chance ofstaying alive. We decided to take a chance withhim.

After a few months of training, it was clear thatCalvin lacked the prey-drive and focus neededfor disaster search. Every dog recruited for ourprogram is either partnered with a firefighter or,in the case of dogs like Calvin, placed with a lov-ing family in Lifetime Care.

Judy and Clay Phelps of CP Aviation in SantaPaula, CA were delighted to welcome Calvin intotheir family. But the dog began to demonstratesome anti-social behavior, and went back to EllenPaiva at SDF’s Prep Kennel, “Broken Arrow,”for additional evaluation and training. Judy and

Lifetime Care FamiliesWhat happens to all the wonderful dogs whodon’t have what it takes to be a Search Dog?We find a loving family for each one! In 2007,19 dogs were placed with “Lifetime Care” fam-ilies who opened their hearts to these very deserv-ing dogs. In 2008, we will be enhancing ourcanine and family training program, andincreasing the frequency of home visits.

We are deeply grateful to these extraordinaryfamilies to have taken our former SearchDogs candidates into their hearts and homes, giving the canines the abundant love and carethey deserve.

Clay had become close to Calvin and felt the loss. They wondered, “What next?”

Enter Emmie. Back in August of 2007, SDF BarkForce member Vivi Sparvoli of Animal RescueVolunteers discovered a sickly, malnourishedYellow Lab at the East Valley Animal Shelter inLos Angeles. Vivi arranged for Emmie to get themedical attention she needed, and with immenselove and care brought her back to health. Shealso spotted some Search Dog potential in her,and Emmie entered the SDF training program. She thrived during training, but was so delight-ed with any tender human contact that shejust couldn’t keep focused on the task at hand.

Back at SDF, Emmie found a new, lovingLifetime Care home with Judy and Clay. AndJudy and Clay had found the perfect compan-ion. “We love Emmie!” says Judy. “She fits inperfectly with our lifestyle, has a phenomenalpersonality, and always wants to please.” Clayadds, “At our busy flight school, Emmie hasbecome our canine greeter, and we’re so pleased!”

SDF Founder, Wilma Melville, helped Judyand Clay along the way—first with Calvin, then with Emmie—helping train on a daily

basis. Says Wilma, “It took the Emmie/Calvinreal-life adventure for SDF to realize thatstrengthening our Lifetime Care program wouldbenefit us all. The dog and LTC family win, andSDF can continue to ensure that once rescued,a dog needs never to be rescued again.”

In order to ensure the very best outcome for ourLifetime Care canines and their families, in2008 SDF is enhancing the LTC program, pro-viding extra obedience training for caninesand increasing the number of home visits to helpfamilies give the highest level of care to their newfamily members.

SDF Executive Director Debra Tosch has highaccolades for this very special team:

“Jason and Maverick have an amazing ‘can-do’attitude and consistently exceed the high expec-tations we have for them. I admire Jason’swillingness to learn from his dog, and his help-ful and positive attitude toward everything hetries. Above all, I applaud the support andencouragement he gives his fellow handlers. He is always there to go the extra mile, helpingout in every way possible. He’s the first one tostart building holes in the rubble for ‘victims’ tohide during trainings, and is the first to jump inand be the ‘victim’ for the searchers. He’salways there to help other handlers through frus-trating or difficult times. Give me a hundred han-dlers like Jason, and I would be ecstatic!”

When asked for a few words to describeMaverick, Jason’s fellow handlers shared thesethoughts:

Fireball! The Punisher!(Tim Robertson - Sacramento City Fire)

Awesome dog with a lot of personality!(Dale Brown – Sacramento Metro Fire)

Jason & MaverickResearched by SDF Volunteer Roberta Hendry– Placerville, CA

Confident. All business. A professional. Loves his job. Agile.Dedicated. Focused. Strong!

These are the words Los Angeles CountyFirefighter Jason Vasquez uses to describe hiscanine partner, an 80-pound German Shepherdnamed Maverick. Maverick was donated to SDFby breeder Karen McLaughlin of Las Cruces,New Mexico. A young (but very big!) pup, hewas raised in Ojai by Peggy and Bob Seay.Everyone had high hopes for Maverick, but dif-ficulties arose with the first two handlers pairedwith him.

Jason had his own disappointments with his firstSearch Dog, a Black Lab named Mazale who, five months after graduating from Sundowners, didn’t display enough focus or consistency.“Some days he wanted to be a Search Dog, somedays he didn’t!” remembers SDF Lead TrainerPluis Davern. Already attached to this lovabledog, Jason kept Mazale as a pet, while wesearched for the right match for him.

Thankfully, everything clicked when Jason metMaverick. Their bonding was swift and certain.Jason has the highest respect, admiration andlove for his canine partner. “Maverick strivesto be a professional. I’ve learned so much fromhim. He has made me the handler I am today.Good things come to those who wait for the rightpartner.”

The Handlers’ FundSDF provides skilled canines and ongoingtraining for our Search Teams at no cost toour handlers or their departments. However, most of our handlers have high out-of-pocket expenses related to their training activ-ities. It has been one of SDF’s goals to helpcover these costs. In 2007, a Handler’s Fundwas envisioned to help them attend nation-al training exercises and Certifications, and purchase equipment and training gear.Awards ranging from $100 to $2,000 willbe given quarterly to qualified Handlers andTraining Groups. In order to qualify, the appli-cant must meet these criteria: The caninereceives the highest level of care; The teamhas excellent training attendance and main-tains a high standard of conduct; The fundswill advance the team’s skill level and/or helpthem achieve or maintain Certification.

The fund was launched with a generous grantfrom the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.SDF’s relationship with this Foundationgoes back to 1998, when Stephen Bechtel,Jr. donated a finely-bred Labrador Retrievernamed Sky. The dog excelled as a disastersearch dog, and is now retired with hishandler in San Diego. The Bechtel familyhas remained a steadfast and strong supporterof the Search Dog Foundation throughthe years. Once again, they are leading theway by helping to launch the Handlers’ Fund.

We are pleased to offer this well-deservedbenefit, and look forward to partneringwith other stakeholders across the countryin support of this new initiative.

Jerry Leaper“I think by the second training sessionPearl knew I was going to be her han-dler. She’s an awesome K9! She’s beenso quick to respond to my commands.I think the bond between us was accel-erated by the time we spent with Pluis,Kate and Sharon—three terrific train-ers—at Sundowners.”

SDF’s Newest Search TeamsOrange County, CAThe Orange County Fire Department has received a precious newresource: four new Canine Disaster Search Teams to respond to local andregional disasters. It’s been a long and challenging road for these ded-icated (and patient!) firefighters.

Their story begins in June of 2005, when SDF veteran handler Marc Valentinecalled to let us know his Task Force was interested in more teams. Thefollowing year, Rick Bartlett, Davis Doty, Bruce Hale, Doug VanIwaarden and Jerry Leaper were chosen as future SDF handlers from amonga group of highly qualified firefighters. Within six months, the five wereout on the rubble, observing and helping out during L.A. trainingevents. The new candidates were active at IronDog 2006, proctoring searchsites, building holes in the rubble for ‘victims’ to hide in, and playing ‘vic-tim’ for the search dogs to find.

By March of 2007, their future canine partners had been recruited andwere in training at Sundowners Kennels. Five months later they attend-ed SDF’s Handlers’ Course, and were partnered with their own SearchDogs. (All except for Bruce, who was seriously injured during a motor-cycle accident, and had to put training on hold.)

Normally the dogs go home with the handlers at the end of their first weektogether at Sundowners. In this case the dogs needed extra time to workon basic skills. Rick, Davis, Doug and Jerry flew from Orange Countyto Gilroy four times during the next two months to work with their dogs. Finally, the long-awaited day came: the canines went home with their han-dlers and began their new lives as Search Dogs: Davis and Rick inDecember of 2007; Doug and Jerry in January of 2008. (Bruce was ableto join the next group of handlers, and was paired with Jerry inFebruary.) The handlers feel the extra time at Sundowners will help themprogress rapidly on the road to Certification and deployment readiness. We applaud the commitment and tenacity of our newest teams! Here iswhat they had to say about the added training:

Rick Bartlett“We really got to know the dogs dur-ing our stay at Sundowners, andlearned each others’ quirks. There wasa seamless transition between thekennel and the trainers Spuds hadcome to know and trust…to his life athome with me and my family. We havereally gotten off to a good start andcontinue to progress well.”

Davis Doty “The dogs already know what to do;it’s in their blood. New handlers, onthe other hand, have a lot to learn!Being able to work with Jester forextended training at Sundowners gaveme a chance to really improve beforeI took him home. It means Jesterwon’t have to wait so long for me tocatch up!”

Spotlight on a SponsorGloria PaulBy Roberta Hendry - Placerville, CA

Dog-lovers tend to see the dog beforethey see the person with the dog. This iscertainly the case with Gloria Paul ofPhiladelphia, PA. Gloria first saw searchdogs in action during the aftermath ofthe Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Insetting out to find the source of the dogsinvolved in the rescue efforts after 9/11, shediscovered that the teams had been trainedby the Search Dog Foundation.

Gloria became an enthusiastic supporter. In 2005 her support culminated in thesponsoring of a Golden Retriever, Lilly-Belle,partnered with Julie Padelford-Jansen(City of Miami Fire & Rescue). In Januaryof 2008 she made SDF part of her Estateplans, and became the Guardian of Zoey, partnered with Jason Cornell (SacramentoMetro Fire).

“What I love about SDF is that whendisaster strikes, the dogs will be there. I feelengaged with the Foundation as a Sponsorand Guardian, even though there are noteams in my region. I keep updated throughthe website and newsletters, and enjoyspeaking with Wilma and hearing aboutSDF and the National Training Center. Myhope is that awareness of the Foundationwill grow, and that the canines and theirheroic handlers will get the recognition theydeserve!”

Spotlight on a GuardianSue OfficerWritten by Judy Friedman – Agoura Hills, CA

Sue Officer shines brightly as an enthusiastic, long-time SDF volunteerdevoted to ensuring that the final days of abandoned, abused or sick dogsare as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

Over the years, countless animals have been blessed to be in Sue’s lov-ing care. Her generosity knows no bounds—she pays all expenses, andsays she’ll keep it up until her last cent! Currently Sue is caring for fourdogs and three cats. Her love also extends intothe human services world, where she hasbeen a volunteer with Special Olympics, coaching track and field and bowling since 1976.

We first met Sue in 2002 when VeterinarianFloyd Ventress asked her to locate a deserv-ing animal welfare nonprofit organizationfor a donation from the Emily Gray Foundation, and she brought him to SDF. Since then, thisFoundation has been one of SDF’s major sup-porters, providing the funds to recruit and trainSEVEN Search Teams.

In 2003 Sue became one of SDF’s first Endowment Guardians by includ-ing SDF in her Estate plans. Concerned about what would become of herown dogs upon her passing, Sue inspired SDF to create the “Pet Promise”that is now offered to all Estate donors and guarantees lifetime care fortheir pets under SDF supervision.

Being an SDF National Volunteerby Norma Spencer - Cardiff, CA

What could be better than volunteering for anorganization that rescues dogs and then trains themto rescue people?

Shortly after retiring, I adopted Gracey, a friend-ly 4-year-old Black Lab. I've always loved dogs, and I wanted to volunteer doing something closeto my heart, so I sought information onlineabout SDF. My inspiration was Wilma startingthe organization with her own Black Lab, Murphy.Once I read further about how the dogs aretrained for rescue work, and about the hours oftime and dedication devoted by the handlersand trainers, my decision was made.

There are so many ways volunteers can helpout from a distance. One of the most importantways I promote SDF is by talking to as many peo-ple and organizations as possible about SDF's pur-pose and communicating the need for dogs. I've

SDF’s team of volunteers is critical to every part of the work we do. KarenFay is one of our volunteers extraordinaire—generously offering her timeand talent as researcher, office assistant, Prep Home Family and LifetimeCare Mom, and Endowment Guardian.

Our StoryBy Karen, Kyle & Jilla – Ojai, CA

From my first memories, dogs have been part of our family. I firstbecame aware of SDF at a search dog demonstration in 1998. I wantedmy son to share the enjoyment of seeing a highly trained and dedicatedworking dog. That day we heard Wilma’s story and witnessed herstrong, caring interaction with her animals. We were enthralled.

Since then, we have made SDF part of our estateplan. Our family has also had the pleasure ofvolunteering on projects ranging from officework, to booth support at conferences, andclosest to our heart: Lifetime Care Home.

My favorite companion on walks, at home, and sometimes even in my office is a CattleDog / Lab mix named “Jillaroo.” Once a SearchDog Candidate, in the end Jilla didn’t makethe grade, and we became her Lifetime CareFamily. She has a heart of gold, and is a won-derful companion, accompanying me to work

each day at David Allen & Co in Ojai. The fact that she’s no longer ina shelter makes us forever grateful to SDF Canine Manager KarenKlingberg and her team, who work tirelessly to give deserving dogs a chanceto fulfill their highest calling.

It’s a great feeling to put your love where your time is spent. We proud-ly support the Search Dog Foundation!

Kentucky Sisters Raise Over$2,200 for the Search DogsBy SDF Volunteer Emery Walker - Ojai, CA

In the true holiday spirit, Mills (11)and Alden (9), of Lexington,Kentucky, spent much of theirlast two Christmases decoratingand stuffing stockings with dogtreats and toys and Christmascookies to benefit SDF. The girlswere inspired by the efforts of thesearch dogs at Ground Zero andhurricane Katrina. Mills andAlden both love dogs, especiallytheir two Labs, Frances and Stella.“We think it’s cool that the SearchDog Foundation rescues dogsand trains them to rescue people, and we wanted to help themout!” says Mills.

Says Mom: “We can provide our children with a great education, we canfoster their talents and athletic abilities, but if we fail to teach them com-passion, we have missed a golden opportunity. It’s a nice thing to let yourchildren see that they can make a difference.” And they have! (The girlsare featured in the December/January issue of Dogs for Kids.)

The selectionwas made by 21 judgesincluding actor SidneyPoitier, former presidentialadvisor David Gergen, journalist Cokie Roberts, author Gloria Steinem.

The five winners each received $100,000 in prize money, which Wilmadonated to SDF’s Guardian Endowment Fund. At 74, Wilma is still “firedup and ready to go,” actively involved in SDF’s programs and the cre-ation of a National Training Center.

Search dogs are a wonderful example of the power of the canine-human bond in service to society. The mission of Boehringer IngelheimVetmedica, Inc. (BIVI—a subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation, based in Ridgefield, CT) is to benefit the health and well-being ofhumankind by contributing to an adequate supply of safe, nutritious foodand by promoting the emotional and physical benefits arising from thisspecial bond.

BIVI’s partnership withSDF began in 2004, andin 2007 the company madea renewed commitment tothe Foundation and thebond between its handlers and canines.Metacam®, an osteo-arthritis and anti-inflammatory drug, is the Official ArthritisMedication of the Search Dog Foundation. Our handlers depend on it. We encourage those of you caring for activeand older dogs to ask your vet about Metacam®. If it’s good enough forthese hard-working, courageous canines, we hope you’ll agree it’s goodenough for your beloved pet!

SDF Veteran Handler Ron Weckbacher:“I call Metacam Manny’s ‘GO-GO Juice’ because of the heightened ener-gy and mobility it gives him.”

SDF Founding Handler Rick Lee:“After hearing friends talk about the improved quality of life restoredin their dogs, I decided to put Ana on Metacam. I see an extreme dif-ference when she’s on it. It’s easy to use, and is helping Ana’s day-to-day life as she ages.”

SDF Volunteer Merilee Eaton:“Sadie was a pound puppy that was built all wrong—she has terrible joints. She’s six years old and has been on Metacam for four years. It’s madesuch a difference in keeping her active. When she comes in at night withher big brown eyes “asking” for something, I know it’s a ‘Metacam night!’”

Our MissionThe mission of the Search Dog Foundation is to produce the most highly trainedcanine disaster search teams in the nation. The job of these teams is to findpeople buried alive in the wreckage of natural and man-made disasters.

To create these teams, SDF recruits rescued dogs from shelters and breedrescue groups, gives them professional training, and partners them with fire-fighters and other first responders at no cost to their departments.Weensure lifetime care for every dog in our program: once rescued, these dogswill never need to be rescued again.

SDF receives no government funding, and relies on our supporters through-out the country to provide these services. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organ-ization, tax ID number 77-0412509.

Helmets Off to Our Search Site Providers! In order to achieve FEMA Certification and maintain deployment readiness,SDF Search Teams must train twice a week on piles of rubble that simulatedisaster sites. The sites are not easy to find…or keep! A mound of bouldersthat Search Dogs skillfully navigate one week might be ground up and turnedinto a road the next.

The Search Dog Foundation is deeply indebted to Redwood Landfill (RaminKhany), Vulcan Materials (Jerry Lundeman), Waste Management, Inc.(Cynthia Rodriguez) and other recycling centers for making their locationsavailable to our teams fortraining purposes.

Waste Management is oneof our most important part-ners. In addition to open-ing up their sites for theuse of our L.A. teams, thecompany consistently goesthe extra mile, building pilesto our specifications forspecial trainings and eval-uations, and providingequipment and food for par-ticipants.

Cynthia Rodriguez: “When I saw photos of the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina,it reminded me of a Waste Management rubble site! It helped me see whythese venues are so important to the Search Teams. SDF is such a great cause—we’re delighted to be a part of your work.”

In January of 2005 two commuter trains collided in Glendale, CA. AWaste Management employee who commutes on the train was in the frontcar and sustained serious injuries. His co-workers, following the newsreports, recognized SDF team Su Vodrazka and Hero. They were greatly relieved, assured that everything possible was being done to find survivors.

SDF thanks our friends at Waste Management, Inc. for theircritically needed support!

once again exceeded its income goal. We were able tokeep expenses down, and launched 2008 with fivemonths of reserve in the bank.

Since 2001 SDF has put significant resources into trans-forming the agency from a small volunteer group intoa stable, impactful nonprofit supported by a smallarmy of volunteers. Substantial resources have been ded-icated to servicing our stakeholders and strengtheningour existing income streams through national awarenessand outreach.

With a strong fundraising function in place, we are nowfocusing more intensively on Program. Our goal is 85%or higher in Program-related expenses by 12/31/08.Toward this end, in 2008 we will be concentrating onnew initiatives including canine recruitment and LifetimeCare programs, a Handlers’ Fund, and enhanced fieldpresence and case management programs. We willalso be hiring a Program Director (for the past two yearsour Executive Director has done double-duty, serving inboth capacities).

In February of 2008 we closed escrow on a 125-acre par-cel destined to be the National Search Dog Training Centerfor all U.S. teams. The purchase was possible thanks tothe donation of a local farm family, and will have a sig-nificant impact on our Program expenses.

Our deepest thanks for your support, and for enablingthe Search Dog Foundation to consistently raise the barfor Canine Disaster Search in America.
