Good Morning Members & Friends May 5, 2015 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to
them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter re-plied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said. Then Peter
got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and
caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matt 14
When Peter took his eyes off Jesus is when he saw the storm and
doubted. Keep your focus on the Lord! I say to myself.
This is actually the third pastoral letter I have written for this Beacon.
Third? Yes! The first letter I wrote was at the end of April about how the sun
was not very bright and I was thinking about the people who live without
Christ, the SON, and that their lives cannot be shining very bright. There
must be emptiness within them. The second letter was written yesterday af-
ter I had heard about what I thought was very immature actions of some peo-
ple and so I used my letter writing (journaling) to blow off some steam.
BUT after talking to the Lord and sharing my frustration with family
members, I was able to see the ‘silver lining’ and not be stuck in the dark-
ness of the cloud. And this morning, I just want to praise the Lord and thank
each and every one of you who remain true to your vows in the church cove-
nant, your commitment to the Body of Christ known as North Scituate Baptist
Church and most of all for your strong faith in Jesus that is exhibited each
and every day of your lives.
In the last few years, or maybe it has been the whole life of the
church, there have been hurdles that have been encountered. Each time a
major decision is made (and even some minor ones) there are some people
who take their toys (their pain, hurt feelings, talents) and leave. The saddest
part for me is that often times the Body has no idea why they left or where
they went. BUT the strong branches, - yes, I am mixing my modifiers, remain
attached to the vine and continue to grow stronger and more fruitful.
We have prayerfully walked the journey with each other and I just
thank those of you who put the Body of Christ before your own likes and de-
sires. Many of you have shared how just the struggle of whether to
go to one service or to continue on with two and maybe even add another
worship service, how all of this discussion has helped you look at others in
the church and learned about their needs. Others of you have shared about
thinking ‘outside the box’. That is difficult for most of us, but we continue to
be strengthened and grow closer to each other because of the abilities of
some.
Some of you have looked at your own lives and your commitment to
Christ and have increased your giving. Others have volunteered more of
their time, some to chair the Church Christmas Faire, have a Memorial Day
fund raiser during the parade and to work with the “Rain Garden Project”.
We have received a wonderful, awesome gift from Robert and Nor-
ma Heath in their estate. God continues to bless us in so many, many ways
that we sometimes have to stop and see how the hurdles, the valleys and
the discussions are making us stronger in our fellowship with each other and
in our faith in Christ.
So as we continue with our everyday hurdles, winds, storms and
pain, let us keep our eyes on Jesus. We cannot focus on the clouds. We
must keep our eyes on Jesus and follow where he leads us and continue
Sharing the Light of Christ wherever we go and with whom we meet.
Yesterday, I wanted to quit. I’m tired of some of the things I am called to do. There may be some of you who can identify with that feeling at times. But God calls us to unity, be of one mind, the mind of Christ. He didn’t call us to an easy path or promise us roses without thorns. So when I went to talk to the Lord yesterday in my fit of “I don’t want to do this anymore”; He simply turned me around and showed me the Light (the silver lining around the cloud) and said “Love them, and keep your eyes on me – you of little faith.” While I am typing this, I got a text, our brother Frank Searle has gone to be with his Lord. That’s what our job is; To share the salvation of Christ, to love one another and to be with our sisters and brothers when their need comfort, healing, fed or just someone to sit with them to watch the cloud and see the silver lining.
Yes, thanks to all of you. You are loved.
Pastor Reppa
Service to our Country and Community
As we celebrate the 180th anniversary of our church, the Historical Rele-
vance Team of the Think Tank is gathering information about the ways in which our faith and commitment to Christian service have motivated past and present church people to serve our country and our community. We are starting with the plaques in the narthex that list the World War service of past members and are also creating a record of services by church folks since then. Please help us by giving us the information about your service, your relatives, or your ancestors’ service:

DID YOU KNOW??
HISTORY OF MAY BASKETS
The ancient Romans observed the coming of spring in their festival hon-oring Flora, the goddess of flowers. Although May Day was an important holiday in England, it never became significant in the United States, es-pecially as a home celebration, because the Puritan settlers frowned up-on the Maypole and on dancing as frivolous. In time, however, the charming custom of May baskets, which are made and filled with flowers by children who then distribute them in the neighborhood in the early morning, has been adopted in many parts of the country. In recent years Americans seem to have attempted a revival of May Day, although in a way designed for children. Some schools supervise the making of paper May baskets which are meant to be filled with flowers or candy. Long ago little girls used to place dolls in the baskets. At the NSBC May baskets were first sold at the May Breakfast in 1932 and the tradition has continued since then. Home-made fudge or plants are placed in the baskets. The pattern for making these May baskets has been passed down through the years from one group of women to an-other. The baskets are currently made by the ladies of North Scituate Baptist Church and chaired by Betty Wetherbee who hosts workshops that are a great fun with delicious snacks. The nimble fingers of this group start early in March to make approximately 160 May Baskets. Crepe paper is purchased and each basket has a flower on the handle. They are beauti-ful and unique and we are very grateful to each of the ladies that take part in this important ministry.
SHARING GOD’S HOUSE WITH
The Seventh Day Adventist Church
The Trustees and leadership of NSBC wants you all to know that
we have opened our building to the SDAC that meets on Hartford Pike
just outside of Scituate.
During the winter they experienced a water line break in their
church building and there has been significant damage. They hoped
they would need to use our building for only a couple of weeks but that
has not been the case. At this time they are praying that their building
will be ready by the end of July.
The congregation worships in the NSBC sanctuary on Saturday
mornings when we do not have an event or service in there. At other
times they have been worshiping in Churchill Hall and are very grateful
for NSBC hospitality.
Please keep Pastor Joseph and the members in prayer as they
struggle to rebuild parts of their building and strengthen parts of their
congregation.
Children’s Day will be on Sunday, June 7th at 9:00 AM. There is only one service that day. The Sunday classes will be sharing what they learned this year during the morning worship service. Children’s Bibles will be presented to second and third graders. Travel Bibles will be presented to High School graduates, and College graduates will be recognized. Please let the church know if your family has a graduate.
After church on June 7th the entire
church is invited to the All Church Picnic.
The Pastors have agreed to host it again this year. It will be at 2525 Harney Hill Road in Coventry from 12 to 3 PM. The Christian Education Board will provide lemonade, water, paper goods and condiments. Each family should bring their own meat and something to share. A signup sheet will be available soon in the Vestry. Grills will also be available. Since there is no lifeguard, swimming will be with parental supervi-sion only. Bring your favorite outside toys, lawn chairs and join the fun!!
The 1st of three of our 2nd Annual Summer Car Shows will be held on May 23rd! Please mark your calendar and plan on stopping by at this fantastic event. Incredible
cars, great fellowship, food and drink available and featuring DJ Cruisin’
Bruce Palmer. Future Car Shows will be June 27th and July 25th!!
The Board of Christian Education would like to sincerely thank the Women’s Fellowship for their generous check to be used for Camp Canonicus Camperships.

NORTH SCITUATE BAPTIST CHURCH
CELEBRATES 180 YEARS
We celebrated being 180 years old!
And going strong!!!
On Saturday, April 25th we held a service that was filled with great
music, memories and laughs. There were special hymns selected by Elton
Dexter who played the piano as we sang.
Three members were interviewed by Bob Sherman; Shirley Dexter,
who joined the church March 7, 1937, Elton Dexter, June 6, 1937 and Lois
(Adams) Salisbury April 7, 1955.
Emily Barrett had a reunion with her “Girls’ Choir”. The (girls) women
did a GREAT job and it was a joy to hear them praise the Lord.
The Music Committee out did themselves sharing old hymns and
leading the singing portions of the service. Lisa Girard, Doug Place and Bob
Phelan each lead a section of the Hymn Sing. Thanks to Lisa we had beauti-
ful little song ‘books’.
Our Executive Minister, the Rev. Dr. Tom Wiles, joined us that even-
ing and shared his insights. He also praised the work and dedication of
NSBC for all these years and our continued work to the glory of Christ Je-
sus.
After much praise and celebration, in true Baptist form we gathered to
eat. We had a Pot Luck dinner that evening and as usual the food was
GREAT and there was PLENTY of it.
Thank you to the Think Tank, the Historical Relevance Team, the
Music Committee, Social Committee, Girls Choir, Special Guests, Long
time members and all who made this celebration a lot of fun and a
great success.
A HEART FELT THANK YOU and with GREAT HUMILITY I
accept your Love Gift
My Dear Church Family:
THANK YOU seems inadequate words for the LOVE GIFT you gave
me Sunday. Not only was it one of the most amazing surprises of my life, but
the evidence of your love overwhelmed me Sunday morning and continues to
warm my heart.
While I am visiting my classmate in Drammen, Norway, as we catch up
on over 50 years of our living, your gift of Love will be in my mind before, dur-
ing and after my adventure. Over the years as we have worked and wor-
shipped together, I have felt the love of the congregation and known from
personal experience what powerful PRAY-ERS you are, but your gift Sunday
sends me on my way knowing my sense of being a part of a loving communi-
ty will carry me through the rest of my life.
I may not be able to squeeze in those requesting to travel in my suite
case, but YOU WILL BE CARRIED IN MY HEART WITH DEEPEST GRATI-
TUDE FOR YOUR LOVE. In humility and love,
Vonnie
BIBLE STUDY
Tuesdays at 10:15-11:30 am
Tuesday Morning – May 12 we will be studying I John 3. You
don’t have to know a great deal about the Bible (that’s why we study it) to join
us nor do you have to be there every Tuesday, but come as often as you can
and find the joy of studying God’s Word and sharing with fellow believers.
BIBLE STUDY Thursdays at 7:15-8:30pm
Thursday Evening – May 7th
we will continue our study of the letters
with III JOHN, JUDE and TITUS. Come join the fun of studying God’s
Word and having a safe place to ask your questions and share your thoughts.
CONGRATULATIONS TO JESSICA AND ALLISON
We don’t want Jessica and Allison Bellows to think we are boasting
BUT
We are mighty proud to announce that Jessica has been named Vale-
dictorian and Allison has been named Salutatorian for Coventry High School
Class of 2015. Congratulations to mom & dad and big sister (also known as
Janet, Rob and Emily), plus proud grandmother Joyce. Thanks to the church
family too. Blessings abound
LOOKING AT THE SCHEDULE A HEAD
At the Spring Business Meeting the Diaconate shared that they
believe that maintaining the same worship time schedule that we have
held for the last 20 years is best for everyone involved. That being wor-
ship at 8:15 and 11:00 am during the school year and 9:00 am dur-
ing the summer. Plus, they have been praying about Dr. Dan’s
challenge of adding a third service at some time.
The one change being made this year is that the summer sched-
ule will start the first Sunday in June. June 7th, 2015 will begin our 9:00
am worship services and that will be our Children’s Day Celebration and
the Whole Church Picnic which will be held at the Cottrell’s once
again this year.
Also the congregation decided to participate in the Rain Garden
Project IF approved by the Trustees.
THE BYF WENT TO GODSPELL
Some notes from those who attended.
Good morning Dr. Reppa;
I wanted to write and say, the production of GODSPELL Sunday
was awesome. I really wish that they had a video so that I could have
bought it to show it to the congregation. Thank you again. Lori Andrews &
family
Godspell at R.I.C. on April 19th was a good time. I recognized the
things they did on stage from stories we learn about in Sunday School. The
people in the play had lots of talent and there were some funny parts.
Thanks for helping us go. Samantha Clarke
On Sunday April 19th, 2015 I saw Godspell at RIC, I loved it a lot and
the actors and actresses were so talented. The songs were great and they
could really sing. I recognized some stories I learnt in Sunday School like
the Good Samaritan and Jesus healing Lazarus. I am so glad I could go.
