This temporalit sits ver comfortal for me in the sci-fi genre. The past is never separale

from the future or the present, and the time lapses that the genre allows enale me to address

the man laers of a ver complicated identit.

The pop-culture sci-fi ou riff on often sas more aout contemporar hopes and fears

than aout the future. What are some of the hopes and fears our work reflects?

The imaginar sci-fi worlds that I create are never reall an escape from realit, ut rather a new

language for addressing a present that seems to e stuck in a limo. The sci-fi genre alwas

projects humanit’s angst and fears and warns that things will reach catastrophic heights if

allowed to continue. This forewarning is present in most of m recent work.

The genre also often underlines the thin line etween utopia and dstopia, so it deals with the

tension of extremes and the amiguit of perceived or accepted notions, something that

resonates well when addressing the future of Palestine, e it fear of another massive exodus or

the erosion of its territories or its people.

Archaeolog currentl plas an interesting role the Mideast: in Israel it’s used to assert a

right to the land, while in Iraq and Afghanistan fundamentalists are destroing pre-Islamic

antiquities. How do ou use archaeolog in our new film?

In m last film, In The Future The Ate From The Finest Porcelain, we follow a reel leader who

calls herself a “narrative terrorist.” Her mission is to change the course of histor  planting

porcelain plates with the Palestinian keffieh pattern in the ground for future archaeologists to

excavate. These plates function as deposits of a new cultural DNA. The film tries to expose the

thin line etween fiction and realit and the fact that histor does not have to e uilt on truth.

Mtholog, more often than not, plas a ig role in this war on narrative, and in the case of

Israel instrumentalized archaeolog is more apparent than anwhere else. 

Lacoste removed Nation state from its art prize competition in 2009 for eing “too pro-

Palestinian.” Are ou or other Palestinian artists still experiencing censorship in the art

world?

There is alwas a silent de-selecting rather than censorship. Censorship of course still happens,

ut what worries me most are not those clear-cut, latant censorship cases, ut how a lot of

political artists are just not chosen for certain exhiitions ecause of what their work

addresses. 

The more pulic funding is taken awa from art institutions, the more private sponsors have a

sa in what the want and don’t want to get shown. It’s an unfortunate development in man

countries where we see less support for the arts in recent ears. This means that private

companies that support the arts make their own demands and perceive artists as advertisers

for their own agendas.

festival.
