Time to Get It Together… Again!
9/25/2013
C an you believe it has already been a whole month since school started? Time goes by
so quickly! By now you have probably gotten into the groove of things, but if you are feeling like me, its time to start incorporating more healthy steady habits into my schedule! I have been feeling so pretty busy with trying to get the Handler community started, and getting to know you all, that I have allowed my healthy habits to drop by the wayside. So with that said, I am going to challenge you, if you are not already doing so to join me in reacquainting yourselves with your healthy habits! Some of these habits can include the following:
Emotional Wellness The ability to talk with someone about your emotional concerns and share your feelings with others.
Saying "no" when you need to without feeling guilty.
Being able to relax.
Feeling good about who you are.
Creating home and work environments that are supportive and nurturing
Financial Wellness Learning how to manage your money and establishing a personal budget.
Not living beyond your means.
Learning to not let money be the driving force of your life.
Donate some of your money, if possible, to a cause you believe in.
Make a plan to pay back your student loans.
Not getting into credit card debt. Try to pay off the entire balance each month to avoid interest.
Thinking long term - set up a savings account.

Session on:
Monday 8/26 @ 9pm
Hey there Handler Residents! How you feeling? A little sluggish? Are you tired all the time? Well this
could be because you aren’t living a healthy lifestyle. We have all been there, you get back to school and
all of a sudden you are presented with an endless buffet of unhealthy food at the dining halls (have you
had the double chocolate cookies, those things are unreal!) and you are too busy with classes to exercise
as much as you did during the summer. Well I have a few tips to try and help you keep healthy.
The best thing that you can do to stay healthy is to try and exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
This could be going for a jog, hitting up the gym, or even just walking to and from class! Exercise is also
a great way to relieve stress, so the next time you are worrying about that huge exam in a few days go
and exercise and you might just feel like you have had a weight lifted from your shoulders.
Another thing that I like to try and do to stay healthy is to avoid all the fried foods and desserts at the
dining hall. I know it is tempting to have a pile of peperoni pizza with a side of chocolate chip cookies
for lunch, trust me I do, but these foods are pretty bad for you and are better to stay away from as much
as possible. So instead of getting froyo with dinner every night, try to have a piece of fruit and maybe
just get froyo once a week for a tasty treat. The same thing goes for your favorite unhealthy lunch and
dinner foods. Instead of getting an unhealthy dinner every night you should try to eat healthy the
majority of the time, with lots of fresh vegetables and let yourself splurge once a week.
The last tip for living healthy is to try and get AT LEAST 6 hours of sleep every night. Your body needs
to recharge, that is a fact! It’s even better if you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
Sleeping an appropriate amount is key to feeling great and living healthy!
Living healthy isn’t always easy but it will make you feel better, look better, and it may even help
improve your academics, so it’s definitely worthwhile to make an attempt at being the healthiest you
possible!

I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger.
Then it hit me.
It's not that the man did not know how to juggle, he
just didn't have the balls to do it.
I couldn't quite remember how to throw a boomer-
ang, but eventually it came back to me
Did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head
with a can of soda? He was lucky it was a soft drink.
He drove his expensive car into a tree and found out
how the Mercedes bends.
A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to
a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask
how he was a nurse said 'No change yet'.

Enjoy Durham and Be a
Good Neighbor
We all work and live on a great
campus and in a great town. If
you choose to walk way past the
residence halls and classrooms
and go out into areas in
Durham where there are
traditional-looking single
family houses, remember that
the residents who live in these
houses need quiet in the
evening and at night. Just like
your families and neighbors did
back home. Cell phones, loud
talking and walking in large
groups late at night always
wake people up. You don’t like
to be disturbed and neither do
your new neighbors who live off
campus in Durham. Why not

Excerpt from What the Best College Students Do, by Ken
Bain (2012)
“The best students...learned that nothing is easy. Growth requires hard work. The world is a
complex place. We all become creatures of habit in the ways we think and act. To learn is to strip
away those deeply ingrained habits of the mind. To do so requires that we push ourselves, that we
keep building and rebuilding, questioning, struggling and seeking. In fact, this is one of the major
differences we found between highly successful students and mediocre ones: average students
think they can tell right away if they are going to be good at something. If they don’t get it
immediately, they throw up their hands and say, ‘I can’t do it.’ Their more accomplished
classmates have a completely different attitude—and it’s largely a matter of attitude rather than
ability. They stick with assignments much longer and are always reluctant to give it up. ‘I haven't
learned it yet,’ they might say, while others would cry, ‘I’m not good at’ history, music, math,
writing, or whatever. Traditional schooling rewards quick answers—the person with the hand up
first. But an innovative work of the mind, something that lasts and changes the world, demands
slow and steady progress. It requires time and devotion. You can’t tell what you can do until you
struggle with something over and over again. The high achievers we studied learned that to get
themselves to work, they must believe they can do it—even visualize themselves doing it—they
must understand themselves. ‘How do you work best?’ they asked themselves. How can you
