Jesus did not come to do the minimum required to fulfill the law and the prophets. He came to go beyond the letter of the law to live the spirit of the law, and to teach us to do the same. The law and the prophets are presented in terms of what not to do. Jesus taught us that it is not enough to refrain from doing harm to others, we must help those who are hurting or in need. If we are the cause of such harm to others, it is not sufficient that we express sorrow for our action, we must demonstrate our sincere sorrow by correcting the harm we have done and then going the extra mile to do more. Jesus was teaching his disciples and us the true meaning of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Could that be the reason why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so underutilized? Do we anticipate that our confessor will charge us to “go the extra mile” to return the person or persons we have harmed to health or wholeness. PARISH NEWS CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED – FEBRUARY 24 & 25, 2020 The church office will be closed for Lundi Gras on February 24 and Mardi Gras on February 25. The office will reopen normal business hours (M-F 8am-noon, 1-3pm) on February 26, 2020. SAVE THE CONVENT – SHARE THE VISION It is not too late to help Save the Convent! Please share the vision and help us get rid of Fr. Mayhem and Save the Convent! Envelopes are at each exit or you can mark your check or envelope with “Convent Renovation”. Thank you! CATHOLICS IN THE HOLY LAND – LENTEN MISSION Once again this Lent, would you consider giving alms for our Catholic sisters and brothers struggling to live in the Holy Land. You may recall that Catholics, Christians, and all non-Jews living there are subjected to government-sanctioned discrimination. Please, to explain: Israel would like to be a Jewish state. That means that the laws can favor Jewish people even if they are oppressive to Israeli citizens of other faiths. Israel is indeed an ally of the U.S., just as is Saudi Arabia, which is a Muslim state. Non-Muslims living in Saudi Arabia are subjected to Islamic laws. However, the Jewish laws in Israel discriminate against the Catholic/ Christian minority. A simple example: Jews living in Jerusalem have running water 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; Catholics, Christians, and Muslims only have running water 2 days per week. That’s an Israeli law which favors Jews and is oppressive to Catholics. Throughout this Lent, we will be reminded of the plight of Catholics struggling to live in the land where Jesus walked and will be invited to consider dedicating your almsgiving this year to them. Again this year, the Crusader flag which marks every site revered by Catholics in the Holy Land will keep vigil in our sanctuary. Envelopes with the same Jerusalem cross are available at each door and can be placed in the regular collection. Thank you. THE TIE-IN – ST. VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel Jesus says: “Whoever fulfills and teaches these commands shall be great in the kingdom of God.” By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you indeed put your faith into action as you fulfill the commands of Jesus. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please call 985- 872-2520. After the beep, clearly state your name, phone number, address, and nature of the request. One of our volunteers will call you back to arrange an appointment interview (caller id will not display the number). Did you know that you can give online? This week we discuss The Capital Sins. The Capital Sins are also known as the Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Mortal Sins, or Seven Capital Vices. “God has given us free will, reason, and a sense of responsibility. We are to use these gifts to live by His law. Sinning is what we do when we use our gifts of reason and free will in deviation from God’s law. Since the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great (who lived from 540 – 604 AD) the Catholic Church has maintained that there are seven capital sins Mortal sin refers to sin, due to action and intention, which is of a graver nature than venial sin. Where venial sin is relatively minor, mortal sin creates the threat of eternal damnation, a full turning away from God on the part of the sinner, unless absolved of the sin.” https://www.aquinasandmore.com/catholic- articles/seven-capital-sins/ The Capital Sins are: 1. Pride 5. Gluttony 2. Greed 6. Envy 3. Lust 7. Sloth 4. Anger Find out more next week when we talk about the first of The Capital Sins - Pride. Do you have a particular question you want answered? CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING:CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATIONHuman beings are social by nature. We, like the early disciples, are

called to come together as a community whether that community is ourclassroom, workplace or family.

The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize oursociety—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects humandignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage andfamily are the central social institutions that must be supported andstrengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty toparticipate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being ofall, especially the poor and vulnerable.

Today we listen to more selections from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesusoffers us an invitation to live by the highest moral standards. Jesus invites usto go beyond laws and prohibitions to something deeper. Jesus invites us toenter into a profound respect for all of our sisters and brothers. Jesus invitesus to move beyond the law into love. Jesus invites us to be in community withone another.

The gospel today is not just about personal moral behavior. It is abouthow we live together and work together as a community. It is about how to livetogether as nations, as ethnic groups, as institutions, as people doing thingstogether.

The gospel today is about engaging in the work of reconciliation. Thismeans taking the time to listen to one another. This means making the effortsto understand others. This means forgiving others and ourselves. This meansworking at the difficult challenge of community.

    EUCHARISTIC ADORATIONJUST COME

Yes, come with all your concerns and worries; come with all your hopesand desires; come with all your fears and unmet dreams; come with all yoursin and what burdens you down; come as you are. But most importantly simplyjust come.
