9.17 WARM UP
• What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Announcements:-Test Grades are in – you may check at home to see what your grade is – not right now-Quiz Fri: Identifying rocks/minerals; weathering types, erosion types & relative dating-Science Fair: Due Friday
Test Results• Written Test:
– Range: 50%-100%– Avg: high 80’s– How many missed is on back page (ex: -4)– 35 questions total
• Skills Test:– Range 60-97 %– Avg: low 80’s– Added 1 pt due to confusing question– Score is on last page circled
• Both tests are each worth 100 pts (2 separate test scores)
Learning Goal: Structure of the Earth
4 – I can give examples of places that have the FRAPA LOWCA
3 – I can explain what FRAPA LOWCA is2 – I know some examples weathering and
erosion1 - I need to review W & E
Changes to the Earth’s surface
Weathering
• Breaks down rocks into smaller pieces
• 2 types– FRAPA– LOWCA
Erosion
• Removes the rock particles
• WWGM
Weathering• Mechanical Weathering (FRAPA)
– Freezing & Thawing– Release of pressure– Animal Actions– Plant Growth– Abrasion
• Chemical Weathering (LOWCA)– Living Organisms– Oxygen– Water– Carbon Dioxide– Acid Rain
– Examples
Erosion
FRAPA
LOWCA
Erosion moves rock particles• Sediment = rock particles• Deposition = when sediment is laid
down/deposited from erosion• Deposition

Deposition
Erosion moves rock particles• Sediment = rock particles• Deposition = when sediment is laid
down/deposited from erosion• Examples: WWGM – “What would G-ma make?”– Wind – Water (runoff, rivers, waves)– Glaciers– Mass Movement • (landslides, mudflows, slumps and creeps)
Wind Erosion – wind carrying sediment
• wave erosion
Water Erosion – waves, rivers, streams, waterfalls
Glaciers• glaciers
Mass Movement Examples - gravity
• Mudslide• Landslide• Creeps & Slumps• Avalanches• US
