LEGION DONATES TO OPERATION PURPLE CAMP

On Thursday, August 8, the American Legion Post 928, The Sons of the Legion and the Auxiliary met with Pio-neer Camp and Retreat Center. The American Legion, the Sons of the Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary made a dona-tion of $500 each for a total of $1500 to Operation Purple Camp. Operation Purple Camp is the only camp program in western NY designed specifically for military youth. One of the week’s of Operation Purple Camp is held at Pioneer Camp and Retreat Center in Angola. This year the camp was held July 14-19 and the week was full of the best camp activities -- boats, beach, woods, ropes course, campfires, games, campouts, sports, zip lines, and more! Two of the Juniors from the American Legion, Alexis and Lacie McMurray, attended the Operation Purple Camp this past July. ANNUAL TLC HEALTH NETWORK GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES FUNDS FOR

CARDIAC REHAB PROGRAM Cardiac rehab departments at two TLC Health Network locations will benefit from the generosity of participants, prize sponsors, and donors at a recent golf tournament held at Gowanda Country Club in Collins. One hundred and four golfers participated in the annual Dr. Russell J. Joy Memorial Golf Tournament on Wed., Aug. 28, with proceeds used for the purchase of new and updated car-diac rehab exercise equipment for Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving and Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center. M&T Insurance Agency, Inc., was the tournament co-sponsor. Winning the top team prize were Sam Crisante, Uni-versity at Buffalo (ret.); Dan Misko and Dan Sasso, Com-Doc; and Vince Puglia, Dialogic. TLC Health Network and Lake Erie Regional Health System officials thank all those who participated in the day’s outing, including hospital volunteers and staff. EVANS PIRATES WIN EVANS BABE RUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

The Evans Pirates defeated the Evans White Sox to capture the Evans Babe Ruth Championship with a 12-6 win. The White Sox opened up the game with a 5-0 lead with scoring 2 in the first and 3 in the second. Then the Pirates went to work. They scored 3 in the bottom of the second and 3 in the bottom of the third. They broke it open in the fourth with the four straight hits by Betsy Butlak, Abby Widger, Kiersten McNamara and Bianca Bonnett. All four ended up scoring to give the Pirates a 10-5 lead on route to a 12-6 victory. Every girl in the line up contrib-uted on offense. Kiersten McNamara went 4 for 4 scoring 3 times and had a RBI. Bianca Bonnett had 2 hits and 4 RBI. Alyssa Diamond went 2 for 2 scored twice and had a RBI.Betsy Butlak, Abby Widger, Natalie Fix and Lauren Shaft each had a hit and a run scored. Madison Scheuneman scored and walked twice. Ashley Fix, Paige Errington and Sam Szarzanowicz each had a RBI. Bianca Bonnett struggled early allowing 5 runs the first 2 innings but pitched perfect in the next two innings with 3 strikeouts. Betsy Butlak pitched the final 3 innings with-out allowing a hit. She allowed only one run despite walk-ing 6 batters, pitching strong out of jams. Coach Jim Widger’s Pirates were undefeated against Evans teams this year.

YOUNGSTERS CONSIDER HEALTH CARE CAREERS AT LERHSNY’S BRING YOUR

CHILD TO WORK DAY Youngster Joseph Reed had an opportunity to see how an EKG machine works during the annual Bring Your Child to Work Day held recently at Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving. Pictured during the demonstration in Surgical Services are (from left) Scrub Tech Wendy Irish, LPN, and Operating Room Manager Jean Ralston, RN. Almost two dozen children had the opportunity to ex-perience their parents’ workday on Fri., Aug. 9 as Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York (LERHSNY) hosted “Bring Your Child to Work Day” at two of its fa-cilities. Presented by the Department of Human Resourc-es, youngsters ages seven to 15 visited Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk and Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving. “It’s an event which provides the children with an op-portunity to see the types of health care careers that are offered at our hospitals,” explained Shannon Bobseine, Human Resources Assistant at Lake Shore Health Care Center. “Through hands-on demonstrations, they get to experience the types of work their parents perform each day.” Angela Prince, Human Resource Staffing Specialist at Brooks Memorial Hospital, said the experience can also provide youngsters with a window into the future of their own career goals. “I hope it will make them think about their lives and the kind of careers they might be interested in,” she explained.-Contributed by Kimberly Maben, TLC Health Network,

FLAG POLE DEDICATED AT PIONEER CEMETERY

The flag pole donated by the American Legion Post 928 and AmVets Post 1887 was dedicated August 20 at the Town of Evans Pioneer Cemetery, located on N. Main St., Angola. Evans Supervisor Keith Dash delivered an invocation at the ceremony and commented on the historic signifi-cance of the cemetery. Joseph Pisarski, town historian and president of the Evans Historical Society that oversees the cemetery, added his comments on the maintenance of the historic site. Matt MacNeil, representing Congressman Chris Collins, spoke as well while bringing greetings from the congressman. The Honor Guard of the American Le-gion also took part in the dedication. Pictured as they gathered around the flag pole are (left to right) Gene Hackemer, commander of the American Legion Post 928, Matt MacNeil, Jack Frost, Keith Dash, Joseph Pisarski, Chuck Craven, Dave Aschbacher, Larry Masters, Joe Perrello, Dick Tracy, Chuck Kramer and Joe Tomlinson. ASZKLER ORTHO HOLDS PATIENT AP-PRECIATION DAY & CONTEST

Many families attended this event and enjoyed games, activities, and refreshments. The dunk tank wasn't the only highlight of the day! Other favorites included face painting and balloon animals created by "Giggles" the clown. Hot dogs, cotton candy, smiley face cookies, and snow cones (which were most welcomed on that hot after-noon) were all a big hit too. With “Back to School” upon us, Aszkler Orthodontics also had an end of summer contest for their patients where the lucky winner won a limo ride to school on that special first day. Alix Novack and seven of her friends rode in luxury to school with a quick pit stop at Tim Horton’s on the way. Aszkler Orthodontics is proud to be the only active fa-ther and son orthodontic practice in WNY, with Drs. Ste-phen and Rob Aszkler celebrating 40 years of serving the community. SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL KICKS OFF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR

SCS got off to a great start for the 2013-14 school year. Students were welcomed back on Thursday, September 5th by Mrs. Judith MacDonald & Father Peter Karalus as the kids made their way into the building. The start of school brings some exciting changes. SCS has some new teachers in the building. The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team dropped their first league match 4-0 at East Aurora on Friday. The Eagles league record is now 0-1 and 2-2 overall.

LS BOYS VARSITY SOCCER WIN AT HOME

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated vis-iting Springville by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday, Septem-ber 10th under the lights. Senior captain Wade Bergum scored twice for the Eagles and added an assist. Max Matthews scored a beautiful goal and added two assists as well. Kenny Pierce scored and also had an assist for Lake Shore. Senior captain Bryce Parker-Norton played well in goal and recorded the shutout. Jerry Yeates, Adam Pisarski, Andrew McDonagh, Chris Jakiel, and Tom Mc-Ternan all defended strongly and helped keep the clean sheet. The Eagles league record now stands at 1-1 and 3-2 overall.

LAKE SHORE MUSIC STUDENTS OFF TO A GREAT START

Students of the Lake Shore Senior High Bands, under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett and Mrs. Carrie Poissant are off to a great start again this year. “Following a suc-cessful year, it’s always difficult to keep the achievement bar high”, states Mrs. Poissant. However, the students are excited about their November 4th concert. Makayla Arcara, a senior flutist mentions, “It’s always exciting to prepare new music for our community. Their support at our concerts always helps us to perform at a higher level!” The Music Department is planning another guest artist concert this year. This concert normally brings an inter-national music event right to our community. Past guest artists have included, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, May-nard Ferguson and the Big Bop Nuveau Band, S.O.P (a male vocal group), the Buffalo Philharmonic, and most recently, the Dallas Brass. The department also plans on focusing their efforts on the continuing support of the el-ementary and middle school music students. High school students, on at least two occasions per quarter, will be at-tending practice sessions and rehearsals at the elementary and middle school buildings to help foster greater success with our beginning instrumentalists. Kennedy Cymer-man, a junior clarinetist, and future music major mentions, “I wish I had the opportunity to work with a high school student when I was younger. It will really make an impact with the beginners.” The Music Department yearly calendar is available on the Lake Shore Central Schools Website at www.lakesho-recsd.org. GYMSTERS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN TALENT OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM

O.P. Gymsters 9-year-old Alivia Penman (Silver Creek), 8-year-old Savannah Sayoc (Orchard Park) and 7-year-old Lea Philarom (Lakeview) were selected to participate in a nationwide test of strength, flexibility and skill called TOPS (talent opportunity program). Both Pen-man and Sayoc qualified as the best in the nation to go the National Training Center at Karolyi’s Ranch. This is the same program that many Olympians, such as, Gabby Douglas and Jordan Wieber went through to launch them into Elite gymnastics. Lea Philarom made the National Diamond Team, as she is one of the best 50 in the country (the Diamond Team is only for 7 year olds). All three girls train at Gymnastics Unlimited in Orchard Park.
