Fourth Sunday of Advent www.padreserra.org Page Three

Dear Parish Families,

As a parish we strive to help those in need throughout the year. We really step up to the plate during theAdvent and Christmas seasons by providing food, clothing, monetary donations and good wishes to thepeople in our community. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart and the hearts of thosewho are the recipients of these wonderful gifts. We at Padre Serra are blessed by our community and itis my wish for you to know how much we appreciate you and your efforts!

As you know we also need to keep sight of the fact that our own Parish is in need of financial help eachyear. We accomplish this through our annual fundraiser (Remember just 1 event in a year!). We areexcited to announce our 2012 fundraiser!

In the coming weeks you will see the advertising campaign unfolding with exciting news about this fun, exciting and amazing event. Keep checking the website and bulletin for ways that you can help withwish lists for silent and live auctions, ticket purchases, raffle’s, sponsorship, and special events beforethe fundraiser. We can all make a difference in one way or another but what is important is that we allgive it our best effort to make this event a huge success. It promises to be a fun evening filled withfantastic entertainment, fabulous food, great company and of course financial support for our greatparish and it’s ministries.

I wish you and your families continued blessings during this Advent and Christmas Season. Again thankyou for your continued support of our parish and the ministries that support our brothers in sisters inneed in our own community throughout the year!

Peace,

Lauren BogoradCoordinator of Adult Ministry

Christian Initiation MattersAdvent and the Blessed Virgin MaryAdvent is an especially meaningful season for those who are preparing tojoin the Catholic Church. They catch the spirit of joyful anticipation as theyworship with us on Sundays and reflect upon the scriptures more deeplyduring the week. Advent is also a time when the inquirers, baptizedcandidates, and catechumens gain an increased understanding of theimportance of Mary to the Church. The Solemnity of the ImmaculateConception, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as well as some of theSunday readings give them an opportunity to see the special place that Maryholds in the hearts of Catholics. If you or anyone you know is interested in finding out more about theCatholic Church or about the initiation process, please contact CatherineShadduck at [email protected] or call 482-6417 ext. 331.

Protect the ChildrenProtect the ChildrenShopping mall safety tipsIt’s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all thesights, sounds, and smells surrounding us atholiday time. It is especially important tomonitor your children when taking them through the mall duringthe Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a “safe stranger” who can help them. Forexample, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help achild who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the “manager.”Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like themanager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mallor store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them knowthat you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited --no matter what anyone else tells them. For particular help, youmay call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Simbang Gabi at Padre Serra Traditional Filipino Advent Celebration

This Weekend ~ 11:00 am Liturgy followed by lunch and festivities ~ Serra Center

SIMBANG GABI is one of the longest and most popular of Filipino spiritual traditions and has deep roots in the country’s religious culture. In the early years of Christianity in the Philippines, the missionary friars held nine days of masses during Advent to usher in the event of Christ’s birth. These masses were celebrated in the early morning hours. The entire family would get up and walk or ride their farm sleds to the nearest parish church. There was a practical reason behind the missionary fathers’ desire to hold the early Mass. The Filipinos were farmers and fishermen. With the early Mass, they could greet the dawn of a new day before working the fields or after fishing the seas. The missionaries decided that they could implant in the hearts and minds of the natives the substance of the Catholic religion, preserve the Catholic faith and continue the propagation of the gospels by integrating a distinctly Filipino custom with the needs of Catholic worship. The original roots of Simbang Gabi are all but forgotten now. However, the fascination of going to church at dawn, in order to start the new day with worship, is as strong as ever among Filipinos. For the children, it announces that Christmas is just around the corner. For most, the practice has acquired its own flavor and spiritual significance distinct for this time of the year. In the Philippines today, and in some churches in the USA, Simbang Gabi is a nine-day novena of Masses dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Lighted lanterns called parols or the Filipino version of the Star of Bethlehem, add to the joyous atmosphere that pervades the air. You will see samples of different parols in our Gathering procession and environment. Children will be offering baskets of flowers and fruits to our Blessed Mother to thank her for giving us Jesus. Our parish has been celebrating Simbang Gabi since December 18, 1993 at St John’s Seminary Chapel, before we had this beautiful church, and the celebration has continued to be one of the highlights of our Advent season. All are invited to a luncheon in the Serra Center. Enjoy entertainment, prizes as well as a raffle for all those who donate a food item to St. Vincent de Paul.

Landings Ministry welcomes you back to the Catholic Church!

Landings is a ministry that welcomes back and

nurtures through confidential and compassionate listening and faith sharing the inactive Catholic

who is considering a return. This is a small group of lay persons who listen

to your stories, share their faith journeys with you, and provide you with information on the changes since Vatican II.

We will be starting our next session on Wednesday January 18, 2012

and will meet every Wednesday in the San Fernando room at 7PM for 10 weeks.

To find out more about this ministry, leave a message in the parish office 482-6417 ext 341

and we will return your call.
