90’s HOMECOMING 2018INTRODUCTION

Homecoming is a week of activities to celebrate the spirit of be-ing a Blazer at Valdosta State University. It is a time to welcome VSU Alumni back “home” and celebrate all those who are a part of the Blazer Nation. The following things need to be done by each participating student organization and/or residence hall to partake in the 90’s Homecoming activities.

1. Please read and understand all content in the 2018 90’s Homecoming packet.

2. Log on to BlazerLink to sign up for the events in which your organization wants to participate.

3. Incorporate the 90’s theme in every aspect of Homecoming week.

4. Communicate the enclosed information to your advisor and organization or hall.

5. Select candidates and decide in which events/contest your group will participate.

6. Complete all the related forms for the activities in which your organization or hall will participate. Organizations or Residence Halls may pair with other organizations or halls to compete in the judged events. Pairing must be done before official forms are submitted.

7. Submit all forms into BlazerLink no later than Friday, October 12th at 3:00pm. Late packets will not be accepted. No ex-ceptions!

As we use this football season to focus on ‘un1ting’ as one BlazerNation, Student Life wants all students to have fun and make positive memories through the homecoming experience. To add some extra incentives to the contest, prizes will be awarded for the winners of each 90’s homecoming contest!

There are five contests that each organization can participate in to win prizes. There will be 1, 2 and 3 place winners for each competition! The more your organization participates, the more chances you have to win cash prizes and recognition.• Sheet Sign Contest - First place winner will be displayed on

the Homecoming sheet sign plaque that will be housed in the Student Union and $100. The second place winner will get $75. Third place winner will get $50.

• Sidewalk Chalk Contest - First place winner will have orga-nization’s name added to the Homecoming sidewalk chalk plaque that will hang in the Student Union and $100. The second place organization will get $75. And the third place winner will get $50.

• Poster Contest - First place organization will get $100. The second place organization will win $75. In addition, the third place organization will receive $50.

• Lip Sync Contest - First place winner will have their organi-zation’s name added to the Homecoming lip sync plaque, which will hang in the Student Union, and $200. Second place organization will win $150. And the third place organi-zation will win $100.

• Parade Contest - First place winner will have their organi-zation’s name added to the Homecoming Parade plaque, which will be displayed in the Student Union, and $200. The second place organization winner will receive $150. the third place winning organization will receive $100.

All contestants must be sponsored by a VSU registered student organization (in good standing), or one representative may be chosen from each residence hall (not each floor). Each organiza-tion/hall is allowed only one (1) entry for King and one (1) entry for Queen.ORGANIZATIONS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PAIR UP FOR HOMECOMING KING/QUEEN NOMINATIONS. EACH ORGA-NIZATION OR HALL MUST SUBMIT ITS OWN CHOICE FOR A

HOMECOMING KING/QUEEN CANDIDATE.To be eligible to be nominated for Homecoming Court by an organization, each nominee for Homecoming King or Queen must:1. Be a fulltime VSU Student attending the Fall semester of

2018 (undergraduate – 12 or more hours/ graduate – 9 or more hours)

2. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater.3. Interview with the Homecoming Committee prior to any

campus-wide vote. Preliminary interviews will be held October 10.

All candidates may begin campaigning on October 11. Every-one is required to follow the attached campaigning rules and regulations or be immediately disqualified.

The 2018 Homecoming Court will be chosen by a campus-wide election. Voting will take place on BlazerLink. The first election will take place on Tuesday, October 16th to pick the top five candidates for King and Queen, who will make up the Home-coming Court. The election results will be posted @ 10am Wednesday, October 17th, in the Student Life Office, located on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.

The second election will be held on Thursday, October 18th to select the official King and Queen. The 2018 Homecoming King/Queen will be announced during the halftime show at the Homecoming Game on Saturday, October 20th.

ParadeAll candidates are encouraged to participate in the 2018 Home-

coming Parade. The parade will be on Saturday, October 20th @ 11:00am. Candidates are responsible for securing their own trans-

portation for the parade. Be ready to line up at 10:30am in Oak Street lot.

Homecoming GameAll members must attend the Homecoming Game on October 20th. Be there by 3:30pm. Special seating on the home side (east) 30-yard line will be provided for you and your family members. However, all non-student guests will be responsible for the purchase of their own

game tickets. The dress code will be semi-formal.

CAMPAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS

• All campaigning and/or campaigning materials must be pur-chased by the individual.

• Ads in the student newspaper (The Spectator) and other campus media may not be purchased with monies from stu-dent fees that are allocated to specific organizations and/or departments but may be purchased with other funds.

• Campaign posters shall be hung only on bulletin boards and other approved sites.

• No campaign posters or signs may be placed on the doors, walls, windows, glass, or organic surfaces in any campus buildings.

• Please consult the person or persons responsible for the location of the desired posting for other rules or restrictions for that location.

• No cellophane-type tape or other materials that may cause permanent damage may be used to hang or secure cam-paign materials.

• Tags may be worn by the candidate (“Hello, I’m Jane Doe”) as a source of identification only.

• All sheet signs must be approved by the Office of Stu-dent Life, and all posting policies must be adhered to.

• Bring the physical sheet sign to the Student Life Office to be approved and signed before being hung.

• Every candidate has 24 hours after the last Election Day to remove any and all campaign materials.

90’s HOMECOMING 2018SHEET SIGN CONTEST

The Sheet Sign Contest will take place on Monday, October 15th. All sheet signs are to be completed and hung by 10:00am. The Home-coming theme 90’s is to be incorporated into the visual appeal.

The judges will be grading on the following:• 1-5 creativity• 1-5 theme• 1-5 visual appeal• 1-5 Blazer spirit

The winner of the Sheet Sign Competition will have their organization name displayed on the Homecoming sheet sign plaque in the Stu-dent Union and receive $100! Sheets can be purchased at a discount-ed price of $5.00 in the Student Life office. The judges’ decisions are final. Winners will be announced at the Homecoming Pep Rally.

Guidelines:1. Sheet signs must be hung by following the campus sheet sign

policy. That policy and the necessary form that must be complet-ed is included in this packet found in Appendix A. Bring the com-pleted Banner/Sheet Sign form and your completed sheet sign for approval to the Office of Student Life before being hung.

2. All sheet signs must be approved by the Office of Student Life by Friday, October 12 @ 3:00pm.

3. Members of your organization and/or hall must draw, paint, and/or decorate the sheet signs.

The Sidewalk Chalk Contest will take place on Tuesday, October 16th in Palms Quad sidewalk.

All sidewalk art displays are to be completed by Tuesday, Octo-ber 16th 4:00pm.

The judges will be grading on the following:• 1-5 creativity• 1-5 theme• 1-5 visual appeal• 1-5 Blazer spiritThe winner of the Sidewalk Chalk Competition will have their organization name posted on a Sidewalk Chalk Winner plaque in the Student Union and will win $100. The judges’ decisions are final. Winners will be announced at the Homecoming Pep Rally. Be creative!!!

Guidelines:1. Any area of sidewalk in Palms Quad may be used. Please

leave enough space between each exhibit so that all partici-pants will have free room to work.

90’s HOMECOMING 2018PEP RALLY/LIP SYNC CONTESTThe Lip-Sync Contest will take place on Thursday, October 18th at the Homecoming Pep Rally. The Pep Rally will take place in the PE Complex at 7:00pm. All participating organizations are to report to John Wright in the PE Complex at 6:30pm on the night of the performance.The Lip-Sync competition will be judged on:• 1-5 creativity• 1-5 theme• 1-5 use of props• 1-5 music selection• 1-5 overall performance• 1-5 music turned in on timeThe judges will select the winner, and the groups will be required to perform only once. The winner of the Lip Sync Competition will have their organization name posted on a Lip Sync winner plaque in the Student Union and win $200. Judges’ decisions are final.Guidelines:1. All persons in your group must be a member of your organiza-

tion or hall and must be current VSU students and bring their current VSU ID.

2. All groups must incorporate the 90’s theme!3. All music and choreography should be in good taste and should

not contain obscenities or vulgarities. Any music or choreogra-phy judged in poor taste will result in your organization’s im-mediate disqualification. Remember, you are representing your organization and your University.

4. Each group is responsible for its own props and music. Props used in the competition must be removed that night at the comple-tion of the event.

5. Each group should email an MP3 file with its music on it to John Wright at [email protected] no later than Tuesday, October 16th by 5:30 pm. Clearly identify in your email what organization/hall the music is for.

6. Use of glitter will result in immediate disqualification; any infract-ing group will be charged a cleaning fee.

7. Each group should consist of no more than 20 total performers.8. The performance is to be no longer than 4 minutes. You will be

timed. If your group’s performance exceeds 4 minutes, you will be immediately disqualified.

The Homecoming Parade will take place on Saturday, October 20 @ 11:00am. All participants will report to the Oak Street Parking Lot, the Sustella end, to be placed for line-up. Parade line-up will begin @ 10:00am. DO NOT BE LATE!!!! There will be 1, 2, and 3 place win-ners. The judges’ decisions are final. The winners will be announced at the football game.

The Homecoming Parade Float contest will be judged on:• 1-5 creativity• 1-5 theme• 1-5 visual appeal• 1-5 overall fun• 1-5 Blazer spirit• 1-5 involvement

The winner of the Parade Float Competition will have their organiza-tion name posted on a Parade winner plaque in the Student Union and receive $200. Judges’ decisions are final. Have fun!!!

Guidelines:1. Check-in Saturday, October 20th with Student Life in the Oak

Street Parking Lot. Float entries are to arrive and check in at 10:00am sharp; all other entries should arrive at 10:15am sharp.

2. Floats may be decorated however desired, as long as it incorpo-rates the Homecoming theme and is tasteful.

3. The parade route will begin at Oak Street Parking Lot, then turn left onto Georgia Avenue and proceed to Patterson Street. Turn right onto Patterson and proceed to Brookwood. The procession will turn right onto Brookwood and then proceed to the Oak Street lot and disband.

4. Do not allow any spectators on the side of the road to jump onto any parade cars or floats.

5. No swerving while driving the parade route.6. Do not throw any items from your vehicle or float to spectators.

Feel free to pass things out by handing things off to spectators.

CAMPUS SHEET SIGN/BANNER POSTING POLICYValdosta State University Office of Student Life

The following policy is designed to allow registered, in good standing, student organizations, administrative and academic departments, and individual employees to properly post sheet signs and banners on the VSU campus in a manner consistent with the mission of the University.

Banners/Sheet Signs: All banners and sheet signs to be displayed on the VSU campus must be approved by the Office of Student Life (Student Union, Suite 2109, 229-333-5674). Banners/sheet signs must be sponsored by a VSU department or registered organization.

1. To be hung on the University Center building must be approved by the Office of Event Services (University Center, 333-5998). Two weeks advance notice is required The Office of Plant Operations must be contacted to hang the sign (333-5875).

2. To be hung in front of the Student Union must have additional approval by the Office of Student Life (Student Union, 333-5674) 3. To be hung on VSU shuttle buses must be approved by the Parking & Transportation Office (Sustella Parking Deck, 293-PARK.). 4. May be hung from trees (but not Pine Trees or trees surrounding the Student Union). No Banners or Sheet Signs may be hung from or attached

to buildings, fences, lampposts, or walls. 5. Can be displayed up to ten (10) days before the event and both the Banner/Sheet Sign and the Rope or Twine must be removed by the

sponsoring organization or individual within one day after the event. In special circumstances, approval may be granted for longer display periods. Materials for creating or hanging sheet signs/banners are not provided by the Office of Student Life.

6. a) Must include the Name of the VSU sponsoring organization(s), department(s), or individual(s); b) the Date, Time, and Location of the program or event (if applicable): and c) the Required Office of Student Life Approval.

7. May not be obscene or defamatory, and must not violate University, federal, state, or local laws. 8. May be hung/attached using only. Twine, String or Rope and must not be attached in ways that will cause damage to trees, light posts, or other

objects. All String Twine, Rope, etc. must be removed within one day after the event. May not be suspended from the walkway over Oak Street. May not be displayed in areas that will obstruct traffic or the normal use of facilities.

9. Will be approved on a first come, first served basis. 10. The Office of Student Life is not responsible for any loss of or damage done to a banner/sheet sign posted on the VSU campus.

Any Banners/Sheet Signs which violate this posting policy will be removed regardless of content or sponsoring entity, and disposed of by the Office of Student Life. The first time this policy is violated; a warning letter will be issued to the responsible organization or individual. Further instances of failure to comply with these regulations will result in loss of privileges for hanging sheet signs and banners on campus for the remainder of that semester, and/or loss of facilities use privileges, and/or other appropriate disciplinary measures.

Complaints filed against any University student, faculty, staff member, or student organization that destroys, defaces, or removes banners/sheet signs without permission will be under the jurisdiction of the University Judicial System.

The University reserves the right to impose reasonable restrictions and/or requirements concerning time, place, and manner of posting activities. These restrictions may be in addition to, or in lieu of, those outlined in this policy. The university reserves the right to update and amend this policy at any time.
