From the Owners
In April 2000, we visited the Brookfield Homes temporary office, a trailer, on Ox
road just outside our now Cavanaugh Crossing community the second day their sales
trailer was opened. There would be no model home for several months as the area was
all pasture land. At this temporary office, we viewed an artist’s rendering of our “to-be”
home, which we thought was extraordinary. So we ventured out onto the 23 acres of
pasture that would eventually be known as Cavanaugh Crossing, and we chose and
walked our lot between two clumps of trees and bushes.
We were one of 6 homeowners that were the original inhabitants of Cavanaugh
Crossing. We moved in over the 4th of July in 2001, although 15 months after signing
our Brookfield contract with delivery date slippage, the wait was every bit worthwhile.
Our original neighbors, both adjacent and across the street are all still here. We
watched as the neighborhood continued to grow, which completed in 2002. We
watched as children grew, yards were planted, and homes were personalized, all the
while retaining the theme of a quiet southern style neighborhood. We are still
intrigued by the number of people that pass through the neighborhood, most gazing at
the “Charleston style” homes with the large porches, many windows, and rear load
garages at the end of the long split driveways. The neighborhood is truly unique,
comforting and one of its kind in the Northern Virginia area.
There is a real sense of community, with several seasonal events such as
cookouts, fireworks, etc., that take place in the neighborhood. We just completed
another July 4th event in our nearby cul-de-sac. A great location advantage for our
community is its proximity to transportation (VRE and Springfield Metro are within
minutes driving distance), close and easy access to Interstate 95, the shopping centers
that have grown up around us, the small town of Occoquan and the Occoquan River
and Park, and most recently the Lorton Workhouse Cultural Center. Military families
are just a few miles from Fort Belvoir, and of course Mount Vernon and other historical
sites are just minutes away.
We have seen very little turnover in our community. We are moving out of the
area to our dream of retiring on the Florida Gulf Coast and seeing what God has next
for our lives. The difficult part of the move is finding a home, neighbors and
neighborhood to compare with what we have grown to appreciate and love here at
Cavanaugh Crossing in Lorton, Virginia.
