August 5, 2009 Meeting Notes by Janet DealSONG: led by Cas Wiseman PLEDGE: led by President Jim Burns PRAYER: Phil SpeerGUESTS: Cheryl Herrick, Wayne & Dotie Wodrich, Pam, Lainie and Caitlin Drobac (Lain's granddaughters)HAPPY BUCKS: Tom Lackey for upcoming PEANUT SALES; Phil Speer offering Dam Duck tickets; Sherry Williams for the opening of the Middle School next Sunday; Monica enjoyed judging the Jaycee Mud Volleyball, Janet Herrick for the huge model boat race coming up with over 300 boats from all over the world;Kay Wiseman loves her home delivery of produce; Judy Candiano thanked Les Reagan for always coming in early to put up all of our banners (Les received a huge applause for this too.); Mike Adams and Rich Lain for the Farmer's Market & Pig Roast; Polly Koesters's niece just got married; Kay Moody announced captains of the Peanut Teams and said the peanuts will now be stored in Tim O'Brien's office instead of Rees' Funeral Home.BIRTHDAYS: Don Ittle, Rich Lain and Lainie Drobac50/50 @ $ 508.00 Maggie Lain felt lucky, but the 4 of clubs didn't do the trick!PROGRAM: Sheila DeBonis introduced her friends, Wayne and Dotie Wodrich as world travelers and teachers. Wayne is an interpreter and naturalist at Deep River Park here in Hobart, which he told us about when his slide presentation didn't want to work. (He is an excellent photographer, so we missed seeing his pictures of the children in the park.) He was dressed as a miller, and he explained how the grinding of corn is a skilled art. He works with children dressed in the theme of the day costume. He also told us of the 1860s Deep River Grinders Baseball games which are played on Sundays. Both Kay & Cas Wiseman have enjoyed attending these fun games. He explained that the mill is made of Hobart bricks, and may account for why it is still standing and used very well by quilters, sewers, and as a museum and store. Horseback riding and picnics and weddings are all a huge part of Deep River Park. He gave us a PATHFINDER magazine with all of the Lake County Parks' activities for summer/fall 2009. Thank you, Wayne.SCRIPTURE: Reita Torin read about "Hope".MeetingNotedfor08/12/09NotesbyAndreaHartySong ledbyCasWiseman:“MyCountryTisofThee”Prayer ledbyPaulSheehyPledge ledbyJimBurnsHappyBucks:RichLane‐fortheHobartEducationFoundationOctober14th5:30pm‐8:00pmattheAvalonManor;TimO’Brien‐playinginagolfoutingtoday;Evelyn‐childrenboughtanewhouse,soldtheircondoandhavetomoveinamonth;KayMoody‐peanutscominginthisweek;KenBuczek‐winetastingandsilentauctionfor“ClothingourChildren”doingalongwithTimO’BrientheyaresellingticketsandtheeventwillbeheldattheRadisson;MikeAdams‐ChamberPigRoastticketstoberaffledoffnextweek.ThePigRoastisAugust2311‐4,TheModelPowerBoatRaceisSept18‐20;CasWiseman‐KayisshippinghimtoShipshewana;KayWiseman‐BrentwoodishaveagaragesaleAugust29th10‐4,andtheirannualstreetdanceisAugust161‐4;Jim‐peanutcommittee;JudyCandiano‐53rdAnniversaryandMichaelisthestartingJVQuarterback;LindaBunzinec‐forthehardworkfortheFarmersMarket;Bill‐goingtobeagrandpaandhadthebabyshower.Guests:Marianne,AmandaMaynard,Mike50/50$533.00Shirleypulledthe6ofSpadesAnnouncements:MeetingnextweekfortheBudget,Bill‐peanutteamsannounced,peanutswillbehereFridayanddeliveredtoTim’soffice,PostCardsandPostageavailable,StateConventioncomingupanyonewantingtogoletJimorKayknowProgram:AmandaMaynardistheExecutiveDirectoroftheChallengerLearningCenter.Itopenedin1999andisLocatedonthePurdueCalumetCampus.Theyare1of2facilitiestohavedualmissionsimulators.Grades5‐8have3differentsimulatedmissionstheycancomplete.ThemissionsallfollowthechangesthatoccurwithinNASA.Theyalsohaveaconstellationprogram.Thekidstrainfor4‐6weekswiththeirteachersintheirclassroomsbeforecomingtothecenter.Theythenhavetoapplyforjobswithinthecenterwiththeirteachers.ThelearningcenteralsohasE‐Missionsavailablewhicharedonefromtheclassroomwiththeuseofvideoconference.Theplanetariumisusedforgrades2‐4.Forthecommunity,therearealsofamilyprogramsavailable.Theyarenormallydoneonceamonth.Familyastronomynightis$5,andfreeforHammondresidents.Summercampsandcorporateprogramsarealsoavailable.

"This is the major fund raiser that supports the majority of Kiwanis projects, and it's essential that everyone sell as many peanuts as possible. In order to boost sales, Jim and Kay presented a lesson and demonstration on "cooking with Kiwanis peanuts." We donned our chef's aprons, told some dumb jokes, and Jim showed how to mix equal parts of Kiwanis peanuts with chocolate chips. We put the finished product in a pretty red polka dot dish illustrating how it can be decorated; and that it would be a wonderful gift for a friend, a party favor, or even a homemade Christmas gift. A raffle ticket was drawn for this gourmet peanut dish and Tom Lackey won. I demonstrated the Frog recipe. It was an interactive presentation where different ingredients (Chex Mix, pretzels, Bugles, peanuts etc.) were on all the tables, and everyone participated in putting the ingredients into the hygienic garbage bag to be tossed together and mixed. After adding all the ingredients and mixing them well, we passed out a package of the frog mix to everyone. (Sylvia, Nicki's daughter, asked why we were eating out of a garbage bag.) We emphasized that this recipe is better if made days or even weeks in advance, and we showed how this too can be put in a container, decorated, and given as a gift."
