For over 12 years Harris led the global marketing of ‘Super, Natural British Columbia’ managing an investment of more that $475 million in tourism destination marketing funds. “There are forces at play in the Tourism industry as we look forward,” said Harris in describing the shock waves and driving forces: energy, economics, e-business and environmental which are likely to impact the business of tourism in the next few decades. According to Harris, the global recession and worldwide economic instability was the first shock wave to have a major impact on vacation planning and trips abroad for many of us. Airlines’ trying to adjust to higher fuel costs, have also created a shock wave directly impacting tourism travel. Higher energy costs have driven up prices on travel, accommodations and food services as well, with travellers searching for the best vacation deals. “Tourism has been most affected by technology”, said Harris, referring to how we gather information and process data through mobile technology, such as Facebook to access product information. Brands have had to adjust to media fragmentation as marketers focus on segmenting consumers, approaching them via the media channels and destinations they use most. Harris also spoke of using adaptive management strategies, described as a process of learning by doing, through which greater understanding of our natural resource systems can be developed and effectively managed for tourism activity in British Columbia and of new operating models to estimate the economic impact of specific tourism events or impacts on the supply side by the tourism industry sector. One thing is certain; the tourism industry is changing and will this lead to a more robust future? Only time will tell. Larry Borden, Manager of the White Rock Boathouse Restaurant was the event sponsor. The Boathouse Restaurant has been specializing in fresh seafood from the west coast of British Columbia and around the world since 1981. Future of Tourism Topic at Chamber Luncheon

The luncheon crowd settled into their seats at Morgan Creek Golf & Country Club in September to hear keynote speaker, Rod Harris, formerly CEO of Tourism BC.

Higher energy costs have driven up prices on

travel, accommodations and food services as well, with travellers searching for the best vacation deals.

One thing is certain; the tourism industry is changing and will this lead to a

more robust future? Only time will tell.Larry Borden, Manager of the White

Rock Boathouse Restaurant was the event sponsor. The Boathouse Restaurant has been specializing in fresh seafood from the west coast of British Columbia and around the world since 1981. With a commitment to serving only wild & sustainable seafood, the Boathouse selects all Oceanwise fish and supports the Pacific Salmon Foundation in replenishing salmon stocks in the rivers and streams in BC.

Chamber Executive Director, Doug Hart welcomed 5 new members: Colleen Duncan, Branch Manager, Bank of Montreal, Morgan Crossing; Ramesh Keshav, Branch Manager, The Co-Operators; Jamie Thompson, Mobile Mortgage Specialist, BMO, Bank of Montreal; Jimmy Athwal, Owner, Fresh Healthy Café; Amar Kler, Notary Public, Amarjit Kler Notary Corporation. having jusT reTurned from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Ottawa, I thought it would be of interest to give you a few highlights. One of the main reasons for our belonging to the Canadian Chamber is to support our Chamber’s advocacy role to work on issues that impact our business community.

At the AGM in Ottawa, we were involved in approving or rejecting over 60 policy resolutions, all with national implications, on areas such as Finance and Taxation, the Environment, Industry, International Affairs, Social Policy and Transport and Infrastructure. As a Chamber, we were involved in presenting two resolutions; one on the “Deferral of Capital Gain Taxation” (which passed) and Acknowledgement of the Base Principals of Pension Reform (which passed). All policy resolutions become a part of the Canadian Chamber’s policy program for the next three years. Policy resolutions once approved are delivered in a policy manual to all respective Departments in the Federal Government. For any members interested in this process or the resolutions, please give me a call and I’d be glad to review the details with you.

Our election for 2011 Chamber Board of Directors is now over with 8 new directors being elected to the board. Details of those elected are included in this newsletter. The new Chamber Board and Executive for 2011 will be installed at our AGM on November 16th.

Next month will be an exciting month for the Chamber as we will be moving our current newsletter publication to a newspaper format that will be produced by the Surrey NOW and distributed to all businesses

in South Surrey and White Rock by Canada Post. Our first issue of this newspaper will also serve as the launch and announcement of the Chamber’s new branding program which has been in the development stage since June 2009. We believe you’ll really like the new image we’ve created for the Chamber.

Small Business Week for Canada runs from October 17th to the 23rd. The Chamber would like to pay tribute to the small and medium size businesses in the South Surrey and White Rock area and the contribution they make to the economy of our community.

Now is the time to nominate!!...You’ve still got time to nominate yourself, another company, organization or person for our upcoming 2010 Business Excellence Awards to be held on January 27, 2011. Don’t let any deserving individual or business be forgotten. You can submit more than one nomination…and our deadline date for submission of nominations is October 15, 2010. See our website for more details.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR … For October 14th for our breakfast workshop at the chamber office of “Small Business Strategies For USA Marketing”…for our Business After Business event to be held at the Bank of Montreal Morgan Crossing on October 19th with Branch Manager Colleen Duncan as your host. On October 26th we have our 2nd “State of the City” address by White Rock Mayor Catherine Ferguson at our networking luncheon at Hazelmere. Two other key dates are November 16th for the Chamber AGM at the Rotary Field House and November 25th for the “Taste of the Peninsula” event at Semiahmoo House.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

is your benefiT plan Changing with your Company?

The business environment is constantly changing and advancing. If you want to keep up, you have to keep changing, too. And that can be true for employee benefit plans, as well.

The coverage choices you made when you first implemented a benefit plan were right for you then. But are they right for you now? It’s very important to review your benefits annually. As your company evolves, even over a timeframe as small as a year, your benefit plan objectives might vary. For example:

You may have more employees than you had a year ago. Their benefit needs might be different than the benefits that you currently offer.

You’re concerned about losing key employees or having trouble attracting quality staff. Enhancing your benefit plan is an easy way of strengthening your overall compensation package.

Your needs have changed – married with a family on the way. A benefit plan is a tax effective means of protecting your family.

Your financial position may be different today, as your business has become better established. And there may be more affordable options available to you than ever before.

Twelve months is a long time for

any business. Make sure the decisions you made a year ago still make sense for you today. Your local Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan advisor can review your employee benefit plan and offer coverage tailored to today’s needs. For more information contact CGB Insurance Brokers Ltd. at 604-535-4200.
