WELCOME TO

SDN WORLD!Software-Defined Networking and

Network Functions Virtualisation are

being heralded as one of the most

disruptive and revolutionary elements to

impact the market in recent years.

Promising to transform the way that networks are managed, controlled an

d used as a

means to innovate and generate new sources of revenue, SDN is shaping up to be

a huge advance in networking for telecoms operators.

Providing flexibility, manageability and creating more choice for operators tha

n ever before,

SDN and network virtualisation are set to increase the speed of service

innovation and drive down the overall costs of network management.

As virtualisation continues to gain support within the industry, SDN and N

FV are now

starting to realise their full potential.

Our approach:

While in 2012 many asked ‘What is SDN?’, in 2013, the latest questions are ‘Why

should we invest in SDN, what are the best applications for it, and how

can we make

this happen?’

Discussing SDN and network virtualisation from an evolved, strategic per

spective,

SDN World seeks to determine the various potential benefits of SDN for carriers

and

how it might best be applied in a wide variety of service settings.

At SDN World, we ask, why should the industry care about SDN and what are the re

al

applications for it? Together, we will look to determine the broader value p

roposition of

SDN and network virtualisation for operators, what its various applications

might be,

where the cost benefits are and how it stands change the revenue mix. We will also focus

on the challenges of SDN deployment and the need to establish suitable sta

ndards,

regulations and policies to help move the industry forward.

We look forward to welcoming you to Barcelona in June!

WHY NOW?SDN and NFV arrive at an appropriate andinteresting time for carrier networks. Thefollowing reasons are key factors for theincreasing interest in Telco SDN:• The telco and IT environments are merging

and there is a requirement for clear definition–and perhaps standardization – of telco SDN.

• Following LTE, infrastructure vendors haveconsiderably fewer opportunities for revenuegrowth. LTE-Advanced is expected to be anincremental revenue driver while small cellswill not be able to match revenues fornationwide LTE deployments. In a way, telcoSDN is the next potential revenue driver forinfrastructure vendors.

• Operator cloud strategies are evolving andcarriers are deploying data centres, where theIT version of SDN (primarily OpenFlow) isdeployed. It is natural that this will propagateto network elements, which may beimplemented in software in these data centres.

• The increasing drive for lower OPEX, lessreliance on over-provisioning, ability to reactto unplanned events and better efficiency inintegrating new services (or partners) are allbecoming a necessity. These are also alladvocates for the flexibility and scalabilitythat SDN offers.

On the other hand, telco SDN currently has someserious challenges to overcome:• Each vendor has a different definition of

SDN, but hopefully NFV will force vendors toalign to its vision.

• NFV compatible (or standardized) elementswill arrive in the market at least 1-2 yearsfrom now.

NFV elements may require forklift upgrades forexisting infrastructure, where there may not be aclear revenue opportunity, but only cost savings.

IS TELCO SDNTHE NEW IMS?Telco SDN (and the NFV) have seriousadvantages over IMS: SDN is alreadybeing implemented in the IT domain andoperators and vendors will have learnedfrom their involvement in IMS. Also, SDN isattempting to enter the market byconverting practices and technologies fromthe IT domain so that they can be appliedin the telecoms environment. Contrary tothis, IMS was a completely new – and veryoptimistic – concept.

The future is much brighter for Telco SDN.Although vendors may be currentlymarketing it similarly to IMS, operators willsurely make sure that outcomes of the NFVaddress their key concerns – and tonedown vendor hype

INVESTIGATING TELCO SDNAND ASSESSING ITS IMPACT

WHAT IS TELCO SDN?Telco SDN seems to be everything that is described bythe following mantra: network elements implementedin software running on commoditized IT platforms. Each vendor has a different implementation, strategyand even definition of SDN, and there seems to beconfusion in the market regarding both the actualdeployment of SDN in the telco network and the valueproposition of the new technology. For example, onevendor claims that in a true SDN, every element in thenetwork needs to run in software (as far out as theantenna), while other vendors consider that an SDNshould be implemented in the data centre forcontrol/data plane abstraction. In the IT domain, SDN largely refers to OpenFlow(although SDN is theoretically a much broaderconcept), where the control and forwarding planesare separated to enable more flexible managementof traffic through software programmable routers.Virtualization is usually considered to involverunning several instances of servers in the samedata centre, a practice which is quite wellestablished in the cloud market. However, both

SDN and virtualization may refer to differentnetwork aspects or techniques, which depend onvendor strategy, network environment and legacy. To summarise, Telco SDN currently refers to thereplacement of network components with softwarerunning on commoditized IT platforms. Severaltelecom network elements are particularly interestingfor this scenario:

• Legacy and out of date equipment: Instead ofhaving to maintain, support and upgradeequipment that is enabling legacy services, SDNcan replace their functionality in software whichruns on standard IT platforms. Network elementsthat are in this category include BroadbandRemote Access Servers (BRAS) and PSTNnetwork elements.

• Processing-hungry infrastructure: Software drivenelements that can allocate processing capacityreal-time are very relevant, so thatoverprovisioning can be minimized. Suchelements include video or traffic optimizationgateways or anything that requires a highprocessing load.

ENTER NFVIn order to address the cacophony of differentdefinitions for Telco SDN, operators have setup theNetwork Functions Virtualization (NFV) forumwhich is described by the following:Network Functions Virtualisation aims to addressthese problems by leveraging standard ITvirtualisation technology to consolidate manynetwork equipment types onto industry standardhigh volume servers, switches and storage, whichcould be located in Datacentres, Network Nodesand in the end user premises. We [the NFV]believe Network Functions Virtualisation isapplicable to any data plane packet processingand control plane function in fixed and mobilenetwork infrastructures.

We would like to emphasise that we see NetworkFunctions Virtualisation as highly complementary toSoftware Defined Networking (SDN). These topicsare mutually beneficial but are not dependent oneach other. Network Functions can be virtualisedand deployed without an SDN being required andvice-versa.Key operators, including AT&T, Telefonica,Deutsche Telecom, Vodafone, France Telecom andVerizon Wireless and several vendors includingAlcatel Lucent, Cisco, Huawei, IBM, JuniperNetworks and NSN are founders of the NFVforum. An interesting departure from the standardmembership model of telecom bodies is that ITvendors have joined, indicating that there isconsiderable potential in the telecoms environment.
