Semester 2 Reports – Prep – Year 10

As the year draws to its academic close, I am very much looking forward to the celebrations of achievement that take place across the Speech Day assemblies. In this forum, academic excellence is rewarded as we recognise the fruits of hard work.

There are, of course, other forums through which we recognise excellence and commitment. On the last day of the academic year, students will receive their Semester 2 report to take home to parents and caregivers. These reports, too, contain a celebration of effort. A heartfelt congratulation is extended to all those who, through hard work, dedication and a determination to do their best, have improved their academic performance.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all families a peaceful and happy holiday period, and look forward to seeing the students return, with vigour renewed, in the new year. I am sure that it holds many fine things for the College and our students.

vary the learning styles and activities while actively boosting the students’ capacities with the language. All were encouraged to speak French at all times during the day. We were delighted with the response of the students and feel that the progress made in this intensive learning situation was well worth the effort.

I want to thank Claire Rogers, Sarangi Kasturiratni, and Leonie Johnston for all their work. Also, St Matthews Albury for the use of the Rectory as a base for one of the days, and La Maison, who let us use their rooms and fed us a wonderful French meal on another day.

Prix La Perouse I am delighted to congratulate the winners of the Prix La Perouse, a competition for students of French in NSW run by the Alliance Française, Sydney. Year 10 joint winners were Jeanie Heer and Harry Smith, and Year 11 winner was Samantha Lane. Samantha was able to travel to Sydney for the award ceremony. She enjoyed the prize-giving and tells us that the patisserie offered afterwards was just delicious!

Trip to Paris and Saintes, France 18 students of French and two teachers are spending two days in Paris, a morning seeing Versailles and then the rest of their three-week stay in Saintes, France. The group left on 3 December and will return just in time for Christmas. Saintes in just south of La Rochelle, just north of Bordeaux and to the east of Royan, on the coast. We are doing an exchange with the College Edgar Quinet and will host 21 of their students and two of their teachers in February.

The College has put together a wonderful program for us, including visits to La Rochelle, Rochefort, Marennes, Royan and Bordeaux. Our students will work also in the classrooms with the French students, giving presentations in both English and French about all things Australian. They are preparing to present everything from Streeton and Olsen through Gurrumul and Jessica Mauboy, the Australian political system!

Year 12 Art Show: 2016 On Monday 1 December, MAMA opened its the annual Year 12 Art Show. This show celebrates the achievements of graduating student artists in Albury. The work in this exhibition is representative of an increasingly high standard of creativity shown by young artists involved. Two students from the College, Kaitlyn Wheeler and Elly Cottrell had work exhibited on the show. The exhibition will run until Sunday 15 Jan 2017.

The students have worked hard to this point, researching and planning in a visual diary and creating their bodies of work. They have also undertaken their higher school certificate Visual Arts exam which includes art criticism and art history short answers and essays.

For the artists involved, the exhibition is a chance to revisit their work outside of the classroom; for some it is the first opportunity to see their work displayed publicly as an object of value rather than as the result of an assessment task. It is also a great opportunity for the artists to get a feeling for what it is like to be an exhibiting artist and see if they would like to pursue an artistic career.

This exhibition provides an opportunity for the community to view the diverse range of artworks produced by local students, and reflect on how each students’ art plays a valuable role in the development of their individual identities.

The 2016 Year 12 Art Show includes work by students from the following secondary schools:

Albury High School James Fallon High School Murray High School Scots School Albury Saint Pauls College Trinity Anglican College Xavier High School

This exhibition also applauds the dedication and commitment of our local Visual Arts teachers. For teachers and parents it is not only a time to celebrate the achievements of each student but a chance to acknowledge their contribution in the immense emotional, practical and financial support given to a Year 12 student in the midst of creating a major artwork for the HSC. So get down to MAMA to see some wonderful young local artists!!

Farewell to Mrs Shaw

How do you farewell a Principal? Mrs Shaw was given a fond au revoir by staff, students and parents during the final Wodonga Assembly for the year. On behalf of the campus, Susan was presented with a bouquet of magnificent flowers and, to add to the ceremony and thank her for being a fabulous Principal, the students donned a pair of individually hand decorated glasses and rose to their feet and gave her a

standing ovation. Thank you for your wonderful work on these past three terms, Mrs Shaw!

Casual Clothes Day and Disco

Wednesday’s casual clothes day and disco was a tremendous success and in the process the campus raised much needed funds for this year’s Anglicare Christmas Appeal. Special thanks to the SRC for their tireless efforts in ensuring the days was so carefully planned.

Year 4 Trade Day

The entrepreneurs of the future were on display last Wednesday when Year 4 presented their Trade Day project to the campus. With the assistance form Mrs Hardie, the students devised, planned, developed and then sold their authentic product to the public and, in doing so, practised what it is like to see their idea come to life in a real world experience. Their bottle top currency added to the concept of profit and loss. Well done Year 4!

RSA Soccer

Congratulations to Jess McGregor (Year 5) for making it to the next trial for RSA Soccer. Good luck to Jess, as she continues on her sporting pathways success.

Text Books for Next Year

All students will have received their text book forms for next year. Don’t forget to go onto the Yorke website (www.yorkebooks.com.au ) as soon as you are able to ensure that books are delivered to the school by the start of 2017. Remember that you only need to order text books – other stationery has been ordered and will arrive at the school shortly.

Sincere Thanks Sincere thanks to the parents for being part of what is an extraordinary school. Indeed, thank you for your contribution to growing this supportively vibrant community. In closing

It is that time of year again…almost unbelievable isn’t it? A time of year that we regularly seem to be putting our hands in our pockets for a range of events and request. On that note…

We have been asked by the local Anglican Parish of North Albury to once again run our Christmas appeal to help local families in need during the Christmas period. If you have not had an opportunity to donate, it’s not too late. Please bring a gift/Christmas food item no later than Tuesday 12 December and place it under the Christmas tree in the College office foyer and we will deliver donations North Albury parish.

Could I ask that the following act as a guide for suitable donations/gifts please. 1. Any foods be Christmas related and non-perishable ( Christmas puddings, custard, jellies, shortbreads etc) 2. Other Christmas items such as paper plates, napkins, decorations and treats that children would not enjoy otherwise 3. If you would like to give a gift for a specific aged child…could you please label the gift with the child’s age and gender?

Thank you once again for your ongoing generosity in giving to others; it is something that our students and their families are very good at!

Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who so generously donate their time to helping out in the Canteen. Without them, we would be unable to prepare the quantities of fresh food, serve students and staff efficiently, and keep our prices low. These are the mums, dads and big brothers who have helped us this year.

Thank you so very much: Louise Flanagan, Ric O’Connell, Sharona Schultz, Jana Kondacs, Vesna Black, An Bernoot, Prue Hutchinson, Laureen Matthews, Cathy Giltrap, Jennie Graetz, Louise Richardson, Ellen Uniacke, Tristan Day, Kylie McGee, Mandy Clarke, Jake Bradford, Monica Catalan and Vanessa Mathews.

If you would like to volunteer a little of your time in the Canteen in 2017, please leave your details at the College Front Office or directly with the Canteen. Your children will love to see you here!

It is likely that there will be some adjustments to the Canteen menu and prices for 2017. The College website will be updated and an updated menu will also be in the Newsletter.

Happy holidays!

During 2017 Junior School students may wear either white or blue shirts. Junior School blue shirts and all new sport uniforms are not required to be worn until January 2018. This is to alleviate confusion over differing cut off dates. The Uniform Shop re-opens for back-to-school at 9am on Monday 16 January 2017.
