NEW WEEK, SAME HEADLINE—O’S WIN BIG

Springville moved to 2-0 last Friday when they crushed a depleted Elkader Central team 62-0. The Warrior’s started the game with the ball and after 3 plays in which they were able to do nothing, they did manage to stun the O’s with a punt fake and eventual 1st down at mid-field. This would be their lone spark of the evening as they then fumbled on the next play and Tyler Stewart pounced on it. After that the night kind of went like this; Scriver hands off to Nissen who scores and Allsup makes good on the PAT. And they did it again and again and again. But that doesn’t make for good reading does it? Elias Nissen would score first when the O’s were facing 3rd and 7 at their own 34 yard line. He shook off two would be tacklers and scampered into the end zone. Brian Allsup made good on the extra point and it was 7-0 with only 2:21 off the clock. Elkader was unable to move the ball and punted, and did so badly giving the O’s 1st and 10 on their own 38. After a Cody Blake first down, Nissen again caught a quick pass from Scriver to set us up at the goal line and Nissen punched it in on the next play. With a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter, the Warrior’s continued to struggle on their next drive and turned it over on downs. A Scriver pass to Jesse Robertson had the O’s at 3rd and 3 on Elkader’s 30 yard line. A snap miscue that could have been a fumble was recovered by Scriver to give us 4th and 5. Coach Martin called the same play that faked me out at HLV—again he called a supposed Scriver hand off to Blake, but Nissen was the true ball carrier. The Warrior’s bit on Blake who played it great while Elias sprinted toward the goal line only to be snagged by a shoe lace tackle—no worries though as he ran it in on the next play and with Allsup’s golden leg, we had a 21-0 lead with 2:27 yet in the 1st quarter. It wouldn’t be until the 2nd quarter though before the O’s would score again. Another strong defensive showing by the O’s forced a Warrior punt. Scriver hit Robertson on a nice pass play for an 11 yard gain on the Elkader 10 yard line. Blake ran it to the 5, then Scriver threw to Nissen in the end zone but a pass interference call against Elkader broke up the connection. Cody Blake got the next call and bulldozed his way in for another score. Barely a minute had gone off the 2nd quarter clock and it was 28-0. Elkader would again punt the ball away and this time Nissen ran it back the length of the field for a TD and an Oriole 35-0 lead. With that score, the clock began to run. The Warrior’s would punt again and after a 21 yard Tyler McDowell return, Scriver lined one to Nissen across the middle who took it to the end zone for a 63 yard score. Allsup’s kick made it 42-0. Elkader punted yet again after their next possession and while this next series wasn’t the prettiest, it still ended in a score. The O’s were called for 2 penalties, facing 3rd and 8 McDowell showed his speed. Number 42 used a couple broken tackles and a cut back to find his way to the end zone and give the Oriole’s another 6. Allsup’s PAT made it a 49-0 game heading into the half time break. The second half was a lot of fun as Coach Martin was able to play some younger guys and rest his varsity squad. In the 3rd quarter, Blake ran one in from mid-field to put the O’s up 56-0 with Allsup’s PAT. Late in the 3rd, Allsup attempted a 32 yard field goal and missed it to the right. But in the 4th, Sophomore Jacob Loehr, in at QB, hit Brandon Noggle for a 30 yard gain and he ran for a score of his own. Freshman James Fitzgerald went in for the PAT and had it blocked, but it was still good experience for the younger group. At the end of regulation, it was another Springville win, 62-0. You can’t help but feel for Elkader who struggled to do anything—they had 77 yards of total offense, to Springville’s 422. Cody Blake led the O’s with 8 carries for 86 yards and 2 scores. Nissen had 7 carries for 81 yards and 5 scores (1 on a pass, 1 on a return and 3 on the ground). Scriver only had to throw 5 times and had 4 completions for 96 yards. After such a sound win, I asked Coach Martin about his impressions of Friday. “I thought the boys came out ready to go better the second time around. We were able to continue to stay physical with them and get a lot of players some varsity experience. The biggest thing that I took out of the game that we need to work on is the mental focus. We had 10 penalties which is very uncharacteristic of us. We have to continue to stay focused regardless of the score and stay prepared even when not in the game”. And how does it feel to finally be playing at home? “Nothing beats a little home cooking. It has been great to win both long road wins and now show the home town what we can do. Having a pep rally and such before the game is another great way to bring the community together and kick off our home opener. I know the guys are excited to put on a show for the home crowd

and celebrate another Oriole victory”. Looking ahead to Meskwaki, what do we know about them? “Well I had former player, Drake Coonrod, go and scout them last Friday night. He said that they like to spread and throw the ball a lot which we will have to continue to work on. I think that we should be able to continue to be physical with them and control the line of scrimmage. Looking forward to Friday night at Allison Field!” Us too coach, us too.

ARE YOU READY FOR A TAILGATE PARTY? The Springville Varsity football team opens up at home this week against Meskwaki. Game time is 7pm, but pre-game festivities are lined up at the high school. Springville Sports Booster’s is hosting a tailgate party complete with cheer leaders and food, the 2 main ingredients to any successful football season, besides the team that is, and they will make an appearance too. Tell your boss you need to leave work early and have your cook to take the night off—dine with the best sports fans in Linn County—the Springville Oriole Community. Start time is 5pm right in front of the high school building, for $5 you can get a sandwich, chips, water and cookie. Plus you can help kick off another Oriole victory. Cheer leaders will be giving out free face tattoos and the team walks out at 5:45 sharp. Let’s Go O’s!

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM IS OFF AND RUNNING

A break in the heat wave finally allowed our cross country runners to hit the course and compete in Williamsburg Tuesday. On the girls side the O’s finished 6th out of 9 teams with Freshman phe-nom Katelyn Gloeckner finishing 11th overall to lead her team mates. In boys competition, fellow Freshman phenom Sam Lorimer finished first for the Oriole’s and 43rd overall. As a team, the boys finished 9th out of 11. Coach Pershing said “we had some first meet gitters” as most of the runners were competing for “the first time” at the Varsity level. Great things will follow, keep up the hard work. LADY ORIOLE VOLLEYBALL TEAM COMPETES IN 8 TEAM TOURNAMENT

First year head coach Claude Howard and his veteran team of volleyball players had a tournament in Independence last Saturday. The Lady O’s beat the likes of Starmont and Benton Community before falling to West Delaware in pool play. Their 2nd place finish in their pool pitted them against the number 1 seed from the other pool, the host team Independence. Springville dropped both games to end their day at an even 2-2. The Lady O’s have this week to prepare for a tournament Saturday at Midland. With solid wins against Starmont and Benton Saturday, I am thinking we are up for a good year volleyball fans.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. The Yuma Criminals are located in Yuma, Arizona. The school was founded in 1909 and in 1910 it moved to what was the newly abandoned Yuma Territorial Prison. In 1912 the school was informed by the city that they needed the Prison back and so construction began on a new school building. While initially being dubbed the Yuma Criminals by outside communities, the name eventually was embraced and in 1917, it became the official mascot of the Yuma school. Students compete in traditional sports and feature colors of royal blue and white. Their student store is referred to as the “Cell Block” and their principal? Well he’s the warden of course. A notable alumni, just entering the NFL Hall of Fame this past August is Curley Culp who played for the Chiefs, Oilers and Lions.

A FACE IN THE CROWD… This week we talked with 8th grader Blake Jordan. He took some time off from his stat duties at Elkader to talk with us: What is the last movie you went to? Monsters University Who wins the UNI vs ISU game tomorrow? Iowa State—by 20 What is your favorite thing on a hot day? Air conditioning If you were named the new principal, what is the first rule you’d make? The whole school would have to play Dodge Ball every Friday If you could go to dinner with anyone, who would you choose? Paul Rhoads Thanks Blake—You just never know, at the next Springville event, You could be more than a Face In The Crowd!

JV VOLLEYBALL—LOADED WITH TALENT

You know how some teams say that they simply re-load each year? Well that applies to Lady Oriole volleyball teams too. There never seems to be a shortage of girls looking to strut their stuff on the court each season. Last week the JV team hosted a Triangular with Ed-Co and Monticello. Coach Tiel Howard had the gals fired up for each match and it was a night owned by Springville. The Freshmen will play at Marion on Thursday while the JV team will play at Monticello on the 14th.
