  1. 1. 8th Grade Science Review Biblical Integration By Sarah and Autumn Job 26:14 And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?
  2. 2. Matter Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. God created everything and everything is his. Everything that has mass and takes up space is matter. A physical change changes the way a material looks, but doesn't change the substance. A chemical change produces a different substance. When you measure matter, you measure it's mass, weight, volume, and density. The study of the properties of matter and the way it changes is called chemistry. Matter has three different states: solid, liquid, and gas.
  3. 3. Atoms & the Periodic Table Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Don't be afraid of God. He just wants to guide you through your life. The smallest particle of an element is an atom. A chemical bond happens when two atoms are held together by a force. A molecule is a combination of two or more bonded atoms. All atoms have protons, neutrons, and electrons. Electrons surround the protons and neutrons that make up the nucleus. Dimitri Mendeleev made the first periodic table in 1869. The word 'periodic' means a regular, repeated pattern. The element's atomic number, chemical symbol, name, and atomic mass are all included on each square of the periodic table.
  4. 4. Chemical Bonds Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. People work better and stronger together than apart. An atom or group of atoms that is electrically charged is an ion. When two oppositely charged ions are attracted, it becomes an ionic bond. Ions form three-dimensional arrangements called crystals. When every ion is attracted to any other ions near it that have an opposite charge, it becomes an ionic compound.
  5. 5. Chemical Reactions Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Jesus Christ will always be the same, no matter how the Earth changes. Materials with properties that are different from the starting material is one of the production steps of a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction is a change in energy. Chemical reactions happen when a chemical bond breaks or a new bond forms. Chemical reactions can be classified into one of three categories: synthesis, decomposition, or replacement.
  6. 6. Acids & Bases 1 John 4:1-3 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. Don't just believe anybody but make sure they aren't liars. Compounds that share properties of reactions they encounter are acids. Bases can be identified by their common properties: bitter, feels slippery, and turns red litmus paper blue. An acid is one of any substance that can produce hydrogen ions. A base is one of any substance that can produce hydroxide ions. A range of values from 0 to 14 is the pH scale. When the concentration of hydrogen ions are high, then there is a low pH. When the concentration of hydrogen ions are low, the there is a high pH.
  7. 7. Energy Ephesians 2:10 For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We do good works for Jesus and we are God's work. Energy is the ability to do work, or cause change. Work is a transfer of energy. Kinetic energy and potential energy are the two general kinds of energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Potential energy is the energy that is stored and held in readiness. Elastic potential energy is associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched. Mechanical energy, Thermal energy, Chemical energy, Electrical energy, Electromagnetic energy, and Nuclear energy are some of the major forms of energy.
  8. 8. Thermal Energy Revelation 3:15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! Make up your mind. Are you on fire for God or do you not believe in Him? The measure of the average kinetic energy in an object is called temperature. There are three scales for measuring temperature: Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. 0 Kelvin, or -273C, are the lowest temperatures possible called absolute zero, when no more energy, can be removed from matter. The total energy of all the particles in matter is thermal energy. The movement of thermal energy at a higher temperature to a lower temperature is heat.
  9. 9. Motion Matthew 17:20 'He replied, Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.' If we have strong faith and we stand up for what we believe in, we have the power to change anything. When an object's distance from a different object is changing, then the object is in motion. A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion is a reference point. If an object changes position, relative to a reference point, it is in motion. The distance an object travels per unit of time, is its speed.
  10. 10. Forces Colossians 2:20 A push or a pull is known as a force. The overall force of an object and when the forces are added together, it is known as a net force. When an object starts moving, stopping, or changing direction the cause of it is known as unbalanced forces. An equal force that acts on another object in two different ways is called a balanced force. When an object has the tendency to resist change in motion, it is called inertia. The net force is equal to the product of the acceleration and the mass. Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: We have to follow Christ with all our hearts and all our minds as if one day we are going to work along side with him.
  11. 11. Magnetism Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. We have to really want Jesus to be in our hearts. We have to follow him and have him guide us through the toughest and even the easiest times. The attraction of a magnet for another object is called magnetism. Every magnet has to ends, each end is called a magnetic pole. Alike poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other. The region around a magnet is the magnetic field. All or most of the domains in a magnetized material are arranged in the same direction.
  12. 12. Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. He strengthens us when we need help. Electricity When a wire is carrying a current and is placed in magnetic field, electrical energy converts to mechanical energy. A device that turns an axle with an electric current is an electric motor. When the flow of a current is reversed through an electric motor, the device is called a commutator. An alternating currents has charges that move back and forth in a circuit A direct current has charges that move in only one direction. Electric generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
  13. 13. Sound Psalm 66:8 Praise our God, all peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard Everyone should praise God and hear the sound of his praise. A disturbance that travels in a medium in the form of a longitudinal wave is sound. Elasticity, density, and temperature are all dependents of the speed of sound. Loudness is a description of what you actually hear. The more intense a sound wave is, the louder it is. A description of how high or low the sound is is the pitch of a sound.
  14. 14. Light John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. Jesus is the light if we believe in him. When light strikes an object it can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted. Transparent materials transmit light. Translucent materials scatter light. When you see most objects, the light is either reflected or bounced off the object. The colors of objects are the colors of the light that it reflects.
