ABOUT ATA

The Arizona Trauma Association (ATA), formerly AZTrACC was started by a group of surgeons in 2007 to improve the delivery of health care to injured patients throughout the state of Arizona by supporting collaborative research, education and outreach activities of trauma centers in the state of Arizona.

OUR MISSION, VALUES AND VISION

MISSION To improve the delivery of health care to injured patients throughout the state of Arizona.

VALUES Integrity: We are committed to imbed professional standards throughout our activities. Collaboration: We believe in the cooperative development of our service, research and education programs.

VISION We will develop a seamless state-wide program to provide care for the injured patient that will involve all injured patient caregivers and their service sites.

THOMAS WACHTELKEYNOTE LECTURE

SERIES

U.S. Navy Captain (retired) Thomas Wachtel, received 11 Navy awards, medals and commendations; many involving his Vietnam service as ship’s surgeon on the USS Ticonderoga and then the USS Constellation in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1969 – 70, and Marine casualty care in Da Nang.Dr. Wachtel was the Associate Director of Trauma and Burns at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and then became the Associate Director of the UCSD Burn Center in San Diego. In 1981, he began a 27-year stretch as Trauma Director at a series of five trauma centers: UCSD, Good Samaritan in Phoenix, Sharp Memorial in San Diego, St. Anthony Central in Denver, and Scottsdale Healthcare.Along the way, he completed Naval Flight School in 1970, earned a Master of Medical Management degree from the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane in 1998, and taught at four universities. Dr. Wachtel has been involved in 27 research grants and published 9 books, 22 book chapters, 145 professional articles, and three novels. He has also taught in 61 ATLS and 23 ABLS courses to date. He is a diplomat of three medical societies, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and is boarded in Surgical Critical Care.Dr. Wachtel has served as the President of the American Burn Association and as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Wachtel is currently a Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson.AZTrACC has named the Key Note Speaker Series after Dr. Wachtel for his significant contribution to the care of trauma patients in the State of Arizona.
