FROM THE RECTOR 8 June 2014 Dear Friends, Pentecost celebrates the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. They had locked themselves away cowering in fear, but when the Spirit came on them, they went forth, jubilantly singing God’s praises and proclaiming Christ as Lord and Saviour. Here at last is the Church, a new

humanity alive with a new breath, telling the world about a new, undreamed of, crowning happiness. May we too celebrate this gift of the Spirit, and may he make us bold to proclaim the Good News. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Amnesty International: Letter writing will be conducted today after each morning service with Neridah Byrne. Today’s letter highlights judicial systems that, when unfairly slanted against women and other vulnerable groups, create scope for entrapment and exploitation by unscrupulous operators (in this case against a Filipino immigrant domestic worker in Saudi Arabia). For more information please speak with Neridah today.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The music at the Family Eucharist is mostly by contemporary English composers. Noel Rawsthorne (b. 1929) wrote his Festival Eucharist to celebrate the completion of Liverpool Cathedral in 1978. 'Spirit of the Lord' was written in 2005 by John Harper (then Director of the Royal School of Church Music). The voluntary is by the French organist Eugene Gigout (1844-1925), who was a pupil of Camille Saint-Saens, and who founded his own music school in Paris. The music at evensong is music of the English Tudor period, Morley and Tallis were cotemporaries and would have known each other’s works. 'If ye love me' is probably Tallis' most famous and widely performed piece, due to its beautiful and moving, declamative setting of the text.

Hear the Aeon Chamber Ensemble in recital at St John’s - Today (Sunday 8 June) at 2:00 pm

Continuing St John’s Classical, Variety Music Series; the AEON Ensemble, drawn from past and present members of the Sydney Symphony, Australian Opera and Ballet, and Australian Chamber Orchestra, will be performing a program of 19th century music by Fauré and Schumann.

St John’s Pins'n'Needles Group reports that the successful stall last month raised sufficient funds for the purchase of one organ stop. Thanks to all parishioners, friends and supporters who made it possible, and to all who contributed with their hard work. The Group meets next on Tuesday 10 June, 9:30am to 12:30pm in the hall. For information, please speak with Pam Fisher (9939 6330) or Heather Andrews (9971 6132). Mothers’ Union (MU): The next meeting on Wednesday 18 June following the 10:00am Eucharist and a cuppa, will hear from Rhonda Speer about her recent trip to Canada. All Welcome! For information, please speak with Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters.

St John’s Concerts: For many years the series of concerts and recitals, which “Encourage Emerging Young Musicians” and bring us fine performers, has brought into our church for the first time many visitors who have experienced here the friendly welcome and hospitality of St John’s family. The 2014 series is now taking shape. Please record your details on the form on the lobby table to receive advice on coming musical events; then plan to participate when you can in this outreach. For more information, please speak with Valda Ashover (9971 7997), and take flyers as they become available for family, friends and neighbours. Happy Birthday to Ken Eltham (12th) Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Kathe and Tim Swales (14th) Best Wishes to Bev and Henry Bingham travelling to Europe this week for their three month Winter sojurn and to catch up with family. While away they will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary (29 August), as well as Henry’s birthday (17 June). Our best wishes to others also who may be travelling over the coming months.

“Welcoming the Stranger” at St John’s: Please pray for “Relationships Australia”, “Community Connect”, “Cottage Counselling”, “Street Mission”, and other community groups working to help people who in different ways may be “on the outer”, and for friends, musical events and functions supporting these and other supported ministries such as Bear Cottage. These are in addition to our own regular ministry programs. Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is at Dee Why Surf Club this month, (16-19 June, 12:30-7:00pm Mon-Wed, 9:30am-4:00pm Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby. To donate, book a time on 13 14 95, and eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit. St John’s Recycling Program: Parishioners are invited to use the collection boxes at the back of the Church for recycling small batteries, candles, corks, printer ink and toner cartridges, spectacles, sunglasses and spectacle cases, and also for used postage stamps and phonecards to help the work of ABM.

Children are always welcome in all our church services at St John's. In addition, at the 10:00am service there is Godly Play for children from three to twelve years, and our Crèche (unsupervised) where parents can take little ones if upset or restless while still following the service on the large TV screen.
