Information and EntertainmentSystem Management
The Phaeton Infotainment system isan electronic system for centrallycontrolling and operating a large numberof functions such as climate control, navigation, and audio.
The aim of this Self-Study Program is toprovide an overview of the Infotainmentsystem components and the operation anddisplay functions of the Infotainment system.
Due to the complexity of the system, thisSelf-Study Program cannot achieve thedepth of an operating manual, but it canserve as a reference guide to the structureof the system.
Because the Infotainment system is subjectto continuous development as technologyadvances and new applications becomeavailable, this Self-Study Program can onlydescribe the functions currently in use.
For more information about how theInfotainment system interacts withinthe on-board power supply system, please refer to The Phaeton On-BoardPower Supply, Self-Study ProgramCourse Number 895303.
For more information about climate controlfunctions, please refer to The PhaetonHeating and Air Conditioning System,Self-Study Program Course Number 894303.

Infotainment System Functions
The Infotainment system in the Phaetonmanages a large number of functions whichare centrally controllable using FrontInformation Display Control Head J523 inthe center console of the instrument panel, the multi-function steering wheel, andRear A/C Control Head (Climatronic) E265.
Functions of the Infotainment systeminclude:
• Audio (radio, CD player).• Navigation (route guidance, destination
information).• Trip data (distance data, fuel
consumption, refueling stops).
SSP274/004
• Climate control (regulation of heating andair conditioning system).
• Suspension settings (level and damperregulation).
• Service functions (wiper blade andheadlight range adjustment).
• Adjustment variants (language input, country selection, etc.).
The availability of specificInfotainment functions dependsupon what country the vehicle issold in and how it is equipped.

Fiber-Optic Data Bus
It is important for the navigation system tohave trouble-free data exchange.
The fiber-optic data bus connects the FrontInformation Display Control Head J523 tothe Control Module for Navigation with CDMechanism J401 in the glove box.Communication between them is madethrough the fiber-optic cables.
In optical data transfer, digital information isconverted into a series of light pulses andlaunched into the fiber-optic cable.
The advantage of fiber-optic technologyover the use of metal wires is that theoptical data flow is immune to the influenceof electromagnetic fields. These fieldsoccur in every wire through which anelectrical current flows.
Signals running through wires that runparallel to or cross each other caninterfere with each other. This includeselectromagnetic radiation, such as from amobile radio, which can also affectdata transfer.

Fiber-Optic Cable Handling
The fiber-optic cablesmust be handled withextreme care.
• Do not crush the fiber-optic cable.
• Do not kink or bend the fiber-optic cableto a radius of less than 1 inch (25 mm).
• Do not remove the protective cap fromthe end of the fiber-optic cable until justbefore installation.
If the protective cap ismissing, you may have toreplace the fiber-optic cablewith another new one thathas been properly protected.

Linking the InfotainmentSystem Components
Networking
Some components, the radio for example, are contained in the Front InformationDisplay Control Head J523. Othercomponents are connected to the systemthrough various interfaces:
• The Control Module for Navigation withCD Mechanism J401 in the glove box viathe Infotainment CAN data bus and afiber-optic data bus.
• The CD Changer Unit R41 in the glovebox via the Infotainment CAN data busand AF wire.
• The Control Module with Indicator Unit inInstrument Panel Insert J285 via theInfotainment CAN data bus.
• The OnStar Telephone/Telematics ControlModule J526 in the luggage compartmentvia the Infotainment CAN data bus, andAF-in and AF-out wires.
• The Digital Sound System ControlModule J525 in the luggagecompartment via the Infotainment CANdata bus, two AF wires, and the stereooutputs for the speaker system.
• The antennas in the rear window andantenna module via direct HF/IF inputand output wires.
• The Telephone Microphone (Hands Free)R38 via a separate input wire.
AF wire has a double shield. This gives it fault immunity, low capacitance, and highmechanical stability.
Y-C wire is an audio andvideo cable.

Self-Diagnosis
The Vehicle Diagnosis, Test and InformationSystem VAS 5051 provides the operatingmodes:
• Guided fault-finding
• Vehicle self-diagnosis
The “Guided fault-finding” mode testsall control modules installed on a particularvehicle to find error entries. It alsoautomatically compiles an individual testplan from the results.
Technicians can also compile their owntest plans. Using function and componentselection, the tests selected are includedin the test plan and can be completed inany order during the remainder of thediagnosis procedure.
