    COMING UP

Coming Up was without doubt the most enjoyable London Suede record to make. Ive always thought of it a s asecond debut and in a very real sense it was, being effectively the first record by a new band. We just happened tohave an old name. Keen to dispose of all of the dank, tortured neurosis of the previous album, we set about makingwhat was to us our pop record, what Mat amusingly called our album to do your hair to. I think this somewhatbelies the quality and depth of the material but the point was we were re-embracing the simple, teenage pleasure ofthe three-and-a-half minute song.

Richard and Neil had joined and I remember feeling like a proper unit again; a hormonal, rowdy, leather-clad gang, wreathed in the smoke of too many Benson and Hedges and determined to re-engage with life.

There were only a handful of people in the world who still really believed in The London Suede at the time and five ofthem were in the band. I suppose I was driven by a psychotic, almost evangelical zeal to prove the doubters wrongand even though there was a lot of work to do I could see the potential within this line up to create somethingwonderful.

It was the summer of 1995 and I would wander round to Richards flat in Kensington Gardens Square and wed sitdown on his sofa bed and write. There were a couple of things which came about through me just bringing along avery simple vocal line and slapping my hands on my knees to approximate a rhythm and hed improvise andintertwine a guitar part. Both She and Filmstar came abo ut like this and straight away we knew we were ontosomething special. For some reason, Dave Stewart had said we could have free studio time at The Church studios inCrouch End so wed also demo there. One day, Simons cousin Neil turned up to borrow a suit. We were working onBy The Sea at the time and it turned out he could play the piano. And so we became a five piece.

The songs kept flowing. I had a tiny, box room studio in my flat in Chesterton Road which smelled of sweat and

rubber in which Id spend hours smoking and writing and dreaming. One day Neil turned up with a wonderfullysticky little guitar piece called Tiswas which screamed with the violence and energy of youth and became the songStarcrazy.

There were endless nights which faded into sunny mornings where me and Richard would sit by the gas fire in myflat listening to records, strumming and singing. After months of writing we still didnt feel like we had the definitivesingle to start the record. But one day Richard came up with a beautiful, elegant chord sequence which inspired meto write an anthem to the outsider, a paean to the prosaic. And so the song Trash was born, possibly my proudestmoment ever as a lyricist. Still documenting the outsider but this time with a smile on its face, Trash suggested thedemi-monde which the characters of the songs on Coming Up would inhabit, a world of pregnancy tests andcheap champagne, drum machines and cellophane; urgent, vibrant and real.
