step 1:  Remove the shift knob by twisting it counterclockwise. Remove the six screws in the center console. There are two on either side of theradio, two by the shifter, one under the steering wheel, and one inside the glove box. Carefully remove the center console by pulling it out. Becareful you don't damage the shifter boot on the shifter.

step 2:  You can now see how the climate control unit is mounted, and how the plate will fit onto the unit. Remove the three screws holding the

climate control unit to the center console bracket. Remove the radio. Remove the four screws holding the radio surround and lower pocket tothe center console bracket. Remove the radio surround by pulling it outward. Disconnect the 4 pin connector on the back of the radiosurround.

step 3:

Remove the screw underneath the climate control unit holding it to the bracket. Remove the bracket. Disconnect the three connectors on theback of the climate control unit. You do not need to disconnect the yellow connector on the right side of the unit. Carefully remove the climatecontrol unit. Make sure the control cables don't get stuck, and pivot the rear of the unit downward and slide it out of the center consolebracket.

step 4:  Examine the rear of the unit where the control cables attach to the unit. You will remove this section to allow easier access to the unit.

Page 15: 88-91 Honda CRX Climate Control Plate Installation Instructions A+++++

Remove the temperature control knob by pulling it out. Remove the two screws holding the control cable housing to the climate control unit. The control cable housing should pop off the unit. If it doesn't, give a little tap to encourage it. Alternately you can remove the cables themselves from the unit. Although this many times results in broken cable monting tabs.

step 5: Depending on the amount of damage on your climate control unit, you may want to take it apart further to fix any other cracks. I could see acouple, so I decided to investigate further.  Remove the fan speed control switch by carefully prying off the knob. Remove the screws holding it to the unit. In my case, there was one screw left, and it was halfway out anyway, making this easier than it should be. Using the ABS Cement or two part plastic epoxy, reinforce any cracks in the housing. Flexing the unit back and forth can help work the epoxy into the crack. Once you have repaired all the cracks, it's time to get thewhole thing back in one piece. I used a 2 part plastic epoxy due to the fact that I had a lot of space to fill, and super glue just isn't up to thetask. MOCK UP the pieces and plate, and get an idea for how they will fit together. You don't want any surprises when the glue is curing.  it should look something like this. NOTE: Although I have not tried it...I have been informed that ABS Cement found at any local hardware store and typically used to bond plastic pipes together may be the best choice of glue to piece the unit back together. It is a vulcanizing cement that permanently bonds abs plastics together. Super glue cures in the absence of air and is good for filling hairline cracks and such. My preference and experience is with 2 part plastic epoxy which works very well for repairing the units.

step 6: Test fit the plate over the climate control, making sure it lays flat and all the edges line up. Pay attention to the sides. It is very important to clean the face of the unit with bug and tar remover, alcohol or something comparable. This will allow the foam tape to stick really good.  Now you can remove the protective film off the double sided tape and carefully lay the plate on the unit and firmly press down on all the surfaces. If for any reason you feel you must add glue to the tape before attaching, a few SMALL drops of superglue will do the trick. Allow time to set up and it should look something like this.

step 7: Installation is the reverse of removal. Be careful, and have patience when reinstalling the unit. You don't want to undo all your hard work by snapping it in halfagain.  Should you happen to scratch the paint on the plate when installing, a good trim black paint found at any local hardware store can be used for touch up or repainting. Any broken or missing pieces, screws, bulbs, stickers, knobs, or buttons, can be purchased individually through a local KNOWLEDGABLE Honda dealer. Note: the a/c button is optional on the climate control. It is however modular and can be simply switched from a unit with the a/c button to one without or vice versa before installing the plate. This button is discontinued through the dealer so a salvage donor unit

may be needed. This a/c switch is also about the only interchangable part between the civic and crx climate controls.

Temperature Adjusting Knob Difficult to Turn?  If you are having problems with the temp adjust knob not turning or difficult to turn. it is typically 1 of 3 things. A problem with the cables sticking or binding, Problem with the blend doors sticking or binding, or a problem with the gears on the climate control. To check this you can remove the cables from the back of the unit. Turn the knob on the unit with the cables detached, does it turn ok, if so then the climate control is not the problem. Now try pushing/ pulling the cables in and out. If the cables do not move or are difficult to move then trace the stuck cable to the blend door and detach it and see if you can move the cable. If you can then its probably not the cable either. try moving the blend door. If its stuck then that is your problem. If you still cant find the problem.... Take it to the shop.

Cable Holding tabs broken? Zip ties and or Epoxy/Glue is about the only solution. This piece is not currently available seperately from the dealer.

BONUS:If your temperature knob portion of the unit is broken off, AND also missing the plastic pieces, you can repair it by using washers like shown in the pictures below.Only use enough washers to space it up flush with the rest of the unit and make sure the teeth on the temp knob still interlock enough to function. If you find you are not engaging the knob onto the teeth enough when you have tried this. You may need to custom fab some type of shim to lay where the original plastic was at.
