BATON ROUGE, La. – Six games intwo seasons.
That is how many times LSU’s twobest pass rushers – outside linebackerK’Lavon Chaisson and inside/outsidelinebacker Michael Divinity Jr. – haveplayed at the same time since 2018.
Chaisson, who leads the team with61⁄2 sacks this season in 12 games, andDivinity, who led the team with five lastseason in 12 games and has three in fivegames this season, will be on the field atthe same time for the first time sinceOct. 26 on Monday for the nationalchampionship game.
Chaisson, a redshirt sophomore fromNorth Shore High in Houston, had asack in the opener against Miami in2018, but he missed the rest of the sea-son with a knee injury suffered in thefourth quarter of that game and wasgranted a medical redshirt. He had twosacks in three starts and 12 games as atrue freshman in 2017. He has 91⁄2 sacksin his career.
Divinity, a senior from John EhretHigh in New Orleans, has missed ninegames this season with injuries andsuspensions, including the last six onsuspension for team drug policy viola-tions. He has nine sacks in his career.
The last time Chaisson and Divinitywere on the same field was Oct. 26against Auburn when they started asbookend outside linebackers. Chaissonhad six tackles with a quarterback hur-ry, while Divinity had four solo stopswith a sack in LSU’s 23-20 win.
“We’re going to be some fanatics,”Chaisson said. “It’s going to be great.”
Without Divinity on the outside op-posite Chaisson, LSU has started a va-riety of defensive backs on the otheredge, such as JaCoby Stevens, Kary Vin-cent Jr. and freshman Cordale Flott.Linebacker Damone Clark started thenational semifinal win over Oklahoma. And freshman defensive back MauriceHampton has played more in Divinity’sabsence.
Divinity started Game 2 and Game 4at inside linebacker, but Patrick Queenhas taken over that position well with 10consecutive starts.
If Divinity does not start at the otheroutside linebacker spot Monday, he willcome in for passing situations to pres-sure and contain versatile Clemsonquarterback Trevor Lawson, who ran fora 62-yard touchdown in his team’s 29-23 win over Ohio State on Dec. 28 in theother national semifinal. He rushed for107 yards in all on 16 carries and com-pleted 18 of 33 passes for 259 yards and
two touchdowns to tailback TravisEtienne of Jennings.
“Mike has been a tremendous passrusher for us,” LSU coach Ed Orgeronsaid. “I know we’re definitely going touse him. We’ll see what fits best. We’lldefinitely use him in the best situa-tions we can.”
Orgeron compared Divinity’s returnfrom suspension to a free agent acqui-sition in the NFL or a player returningfrom injury.
“It boosts your whole team up,” hesaid. “I’ve got to give Mike credit. Hefought through it. He went throughsome tough times. He went throughadversity, but he stuck at it. Now, hegets to play in the national champion-ship game in his hometown.
“What a tremendous boost, espe-cially in our pass rush. We’re going toplay him as much as we can.”
Chaisson’s job, meanwhile, just goteasier.
“It’s kind of going to set everythingfree,” Chaisson said. “So, you’ve gottwo great pass rushers now. And evenif we’re not rushing, people have got toaccount for us, and probably sendsome other players. Then watch usdrop.”
Chaisson figures Clemson will notdouble-team or try to chip – partialblock – both outside linebackers.
“I don’t really have to worry abouttoo much pressure on me or worryabout chip blocks,” Chaisson said. “Ifthey chip me, then Divinity’s going towin his one-on-one regardless. I feellike he’s going to win nine times out of10. Even though he hasn’t been ingames, he’s been working and practic-ing.”
Chaisson and Divinity have beenpreparing for one last game together atLSU.
“We’ve been working like crazy,”Chaisson said. “So, it’s going to workfanatically.”

CLEMSON, S.C. – Tales of athleticaccomplishments tend to grow tallerover time, and that’s just fine with TajhBoyd.
His career-defining completion toDeAndre Hopkins – known simply inClemson lore as “Fourth-and-16” – isbecoming more impressive by theyear.
“Fourth-and-16 actually gets longerevery time, man,” Boyd said. “I had aguy run into me the other day and waslike, ‘Hey, that fourth-and-22 wasawesome!’
“I said, ‘Yeah, let’s keep stretching itout.’ ”
By the time Clemson’s former All-American quarterback and AtlanticCoast Conference Player of the Year isold and gray, “fourth-and-16” might be“fourth-and-40,” but it’s not stretch-ing the truth to conclude that Boyd’slate-game connection with Hopkinsrepresented a turning point for theClemson program.
Hopkins’ reception led to a 37-yardfield goal by Chandler Catanzaro astime expired, lifting the Tigers to a 25-24 victory against LSU in the 2012Chick-fil-A Bowl.
With Clemson and LSU set to meetfor the first time since that game onMonday night – this time with a na-tional title at stake – memories of thatwatershed triumph eight years agohave been rekindled.
The upset of LSU not only showedthat Clemson could run with the bigboys but also helped salve the woundsinflicted by a 70-33 loss to West Vir-ginia in the Orange Bowl a year earlier.
“We needed a statement win likethat to show that we were ready tocompete at that level against majorprograms,” Boyd said.
Catanzaro said it was a triumphthat exorcised plenty of demons.
“I feel like we were doubted for solong,” Catanzaro said. “But thatchanged things. The ‘Clemsoning’term was being thrown around quite abit back then, and it was our chance totake down a big dog in the SEC. It’sprobably the best team win I’ve everbeen a part of.”
“Clemsoning” was a term used tosummarize Clemson’s knack for regu-larly losing games in which it was fa-vored; although LSU was favored,
Clemson’s upset of the nation’s ninth-ranked team and subsequent successeshelped quell the moniker.
Gage Cervenka, a graduate guard onClemson’s current team, vividly recallswatching the upset unfold.
“I think the biggest thing that stoodout to me was they never quit. They justkept fighting,” Cervenka said. “I just re-member jumping up in front of the TVand celebrating. It was a great game towatch.
“It was incredible to see the wholeprogram take a step forward. And we’vejust kept it going and trucking andtrucking and trucking.”
Clemson is 13-4 against Southeast-ern Conference opponents and 90-9overall since that fateful victory.
Clemson has played at least one SECopponent in addition to in-state rivalSouth Carolina nine of the past 10 years, including games against Georgia, Au-burn and Texas A&M as well as fourpostseason games against Alabama.
Clemson also has future gamesscheduled with Georgia (2024, 2029)and LSU (2025, 2026).
“To see the expansion of what hascome from that game is really special,”Boyd said. “I said a few years I thoughtthis would be a 10-year run, but hey, itmight even be longer than that. Clem-son is on top and is going to continue tobe on top.”

SPORTS E3 USA TODAY ❚ THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2020 ❚ 5C
WNBA players wanted higher sala-ries, better family benefits and im-proved travel accommodations.
They got all three in an eight-yearcollective bargaining agreement thatwas tentatively reached between play-ers and the league Tuesday.
It’s not often two sides in profession-al sports are equally bullish on CBAagreements. But that was the messagedelivered by WNBA commissionerCathy Engelbert, who said, “the time isnow for women’s sports,” and Women’sNational Basketball Players Associationpresident and Sparks forward NnekaOgwumike, who said the league andplayers made “meaningful improve-ments in working conditions.”
The agreement aims to make theWNBA a thriving and sustainable busi-ness model for teams and players andone that will create growth and oppor-tunities for future generations.
The improvements are significant, and while it’s certainly a win for the
players, it might also be a win for theleague, which is betting on its players(their on-court talent and off-courtmarketability) to help create revenuestreams that will benefit both sides.
Engelbert, who was the first femaleCEO at Deloitte, is ambitious and deter-mined to make that happen. Shewouldn’t have made this deal if shedidn’t believe there is money out therefor the WNBA. She is a fierce advocatefor the players and already is makingdeals.
The league also announced theWNBA Changemakers program, whichwill bring businesses together, includ-ing one new sponsor, and provide finan-cial and value-driven support. Engel-bert pointed out 1% of global corporatesponsorship dollars go to women’ssports. Obviously, there is room for theWNBA to secure more.
Pay has been an issue – and we’veseen this issue play out in women’s soc-cer – and there is now a commitmentthat will raise the average cash compen-sation salary to $130,000. The top play-ers can earn a max salary of $215,000 –an increase from $117,000 – with thepossibility of reaching more than$500,000 in compensation from mar-keting agreements and bonuses.
There is also the possibility of playersgetting a 50-50 split of league revenue –similar to the agreement between theNBA and its players – if the leaguereaches certain monetary bench marksthrough broadcast agreements, market-ing partnerships and licensing dealsstarting in 2021. That would also pushsalaries higher.
As important as the compensation is,the family benefits are just as importantand maybe even more so when it comesto personal life.
Players will receive full salary whileon maternity leave, up from 50% of theirsalary, and receive a $5,000 stipend forchild care. Apartments, which are pro-vided by teams, will include two bed-rooms for players with children, andthere will be “safe, comfortable and pri-vate” workplace accommodations fornursing mothers. Also included: up to$60,000 reimbursement for veteranplayers for adoption, surrogacy, oocytecryopreservation or fertility/infertilitytreatment. There are also significantmental health/well-being initiatives forplayers.
The league and players also improvedquality of travel by giving players com-fort/economy class for all flights and in-dividual hotel rooms.
Were there concessions? Yes. Playersmust report to training camp on time, meaning players on European teamswill have tough decisions to make. It’scommon for WNBA players to also playin Europe to supplement their income, but with the league trying to elevate itsposition with corporate sponsors, fansand potential fans, it needed to make it-self the top priority for players. It’s anagreement the players understood wasnecessary to reach short- and long-termgoals.
The NBA and by proxy the WNBAhave promoted themselves as progres-sive leagues, and this deal delivers onthat point.

A slow start is nothing new for theJazz. They started last season 18-20 be-fore finishing with 50 victories. Theywere 20-28 in 2017-18 and ended up 48-34. Even an 8-8 start in 2016-17 conclud-ed with a 51 victories.
So when the Jazz started this season13-11 while trying to incorporate new-comers Mike Conley Jr., Bojan Bogda-novic and Emmanuel Mudiay into Utahcoach Quin Snyder’s complex offensiveand defensive schemes, no one was sur-prised. That’s just how the Jazz are.
“We made a lot of changes this off-season, and we knew it was going totake some time,” center Rudy Gobertsaid.
This season, the Jazz have figured itout earlier than in previous seasons, es-pecially offensively.
The Jazz are the hottest team in theNBA. Since Dec. 10, they are 15-1, includ-ing 10 consecutive victories, and havemoved from sixth place in the WesternConference to second with a 28-12 rec-ord.
“We just feel like we’re more connect-ed now,” Gobert said. “We know the mo-mentum of the game, the flow of the
game. We know how to find each other. We play for each other. We’re movingthe ball, and everyone is the beneficiaryof it.
“We knew that our margin of pro-gression was huge, and it still is. Weknew we had to keep working, stayingtogether, and we knew we had theweapons to be a great team. We knowwe can be a lot better, too.”
While the Jazz are known for theirdefense – they are eighth in defensiveefficiency – this streak is fueled by of-fense. In the past 16 games, Utah has theleague’s top offense, producing 118.6points per 100 possessions.
Guard Donovan Mitchell is playing atan All-Star level (24.2 points per game,46% from the field), Bogdanovic isshooting 41.1% on 3-pointers, Joe Ingles
43% on 3’s and Gobert is shooting 67.6%from the field.
“I’m just trying to find my spots,” saidBogdanovic, who has eight games withat least 30 points this season. “Obvious-ly, we run a lot of set plays for me. It waseasy and quick for me to adjust to thissystem.”
Mudiay has provided reliable scor-ing, and Jordan Clarkson, acquired in atrade with Cleveland on Dec. 24, is anoffensive boost off the bench. The Jazzare high on Georges Niang, who is devel-oping into a quality 3-point shooter.
“It’s amazing for us to have this un-selfish group,” Bogdanovic said. “Wehave a lot of ball-handlers who are will-ing passers and then we have a lot ofgood shooters around the perimeter, then Rudy is one of the best rollers in theleague and he gives us space and oppor-tunity to attack.”
Earlier in the season, opponents triedto jam Gobert on pick-and-rolls, and itallowed defenses to guard shooters bet-ter at the 3-point line. The Jazz madeslight tweaks to where Gobert setsscreens, how he rolls to the rim andwhere shooters are positioned. It has ledto better shots and improved offense.
“Our spacing wasn’t great a lot oftimes,” Snyder explained. “It’s a beenreal emphasis for us, trying to generate3’s. Are they in transition? Are they un-der the pick-and-roll? Are they hand-offs? There’s different ways to get 3’s,
and that’s something we’ve tried to fo-cus on because every guy is a little bitdifferent.”
During this hot streak, the Jazzhaven’t played the most difficult sched-ule. The Clippers are the only team witha winning record they have beaten. Still, wins are wins, especially on the road.
Plus, they won all but one of theirpast 15 games without Conley, who is in-jured. There is no question he struggledat times, but there is no reason to doubthis ability to figure it out. Switchingteams after spending his first 12 seasonswith Memphis was a significant changefor Conley.
“You want it to happen as quick aspossible,” Ingles said. “You want it tohappen in preseason or before that. With our team, it’s taken a differentamount of times every year. I don’tknow what our record is post-All-Starbreak, but it would be pretty good Iwould imagine.
“It’s obviously happening quickerthis year than it has in the past, andwe’re obviously pumped about that. We’ll have a better record heading intoAll-Star, and if we can continue to im-prove the way we’re improving, we’resetting ourselves up for a good year.”
Good enough to live up to expecta-tions this team has for itself? Goodenough to hang with the Lakers, Clip-pers and Nuggets in the playoffs? That’swhat we’re waiting to see.
