CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION PAGE 4 LANSING, MICHIGAN

A MESSAGE FROM FR. STEVE

As I mentioned last week at Mass, Bishop Boyea asked that the following letter be included in all parish bulletins this weekend, and placed on all parish websites. I am grateful for this message, and invite all of us to pray and fast at this diffi-cult moment, that the Church will truly live up to the high call of our life in Christ. Come, Holy Spirit! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I am writing this to you due to the recent removal of Archbishop Theodore McCarrick from ministry. Once again, the sins of a cleric have hurt victims, scandalized the faithful, raised anger in many hearts, and brought ill-repute upon the Catholic Church. Archbishop McCarrick’s abuse of minors, his homosexual activity and his abuse of seminarians and young priests are beyond the pale. In addition, some knew about this and did nothing to address his behavior. I am as shocked as you. So, first of all, I apologize for his behavior and the behavior of those who did nothing to stop him. It is incredibly wearying and demoralizing to hear yet again about these sexual sins and alleged crimes. Let us hold each other in prayer. As you may know, each bishop is ultimately responsible to the Holy Father, who is the only one who can remove him. Still, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will be discussing how we bishops might attempt to hold one another accountable, given this limitation. I can never give a guaran-tee that there will not be other clerics who violate their prom-ise of celibacy and abuse their positions. We are all sinners. The Lord Jesus knew what the archbishop did just as he knows our sinful selves as well. Beyond what we can do as human beings to address the behavior of one another, we also com-mend ourselves and each other to the charity and justice of our God. Christ is our hope in all things. May God have mer-cy on us all. Bishop Earl Boyea, Diocese of Lansing With prayers for purification in the Church, Fr. Steve

at the Holy Family Chapel, 1601 E. Grand River

Welcome back, students! On Tuesday, we begin another school year. I’m very grateful for the efforts of Jacob Allstott, our principal, and his entire team, for their efforts in preparation for the new school year. I’m also grateful to Chris Spalding and our custodial/maintenance crew for their hard work these last days and weeks to help us prepare well for the new school year. It’s not too late to enroll for the new school year. As you know, we desire to serve as many families as possible, and will work with you to make our school as affordable as possible. Please contact our Principal, Mr. Jacob Allstott, for more information about our school. The phone number at the school is 517.487.0439. Please pray us as we continue this great minis-try to our parish and community. Bishop-Elect Jerry Vincke’s Ordination A good priest friend of mine, Monsignor Jerry Vincke has been named Bishop of Salina, Kansas, and I will be traveling to Kansas to attend his ordination. Please keep him, his dio-cese, and all priests and bishops in your prayers. Quite a few of the priests from our diocese will be traveling to attend and celebrate with Bishop Vincke. May he be a shepherd after the heart of the Good Shepherd. I’m sure he will make an excel-lent bishop. Women’s Evening of Adoration The Women’s Evening of Adoration will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., concluding with Benedic-tion. This is held the fourth Thursday of every month. The men’s evenings are held on the second Thursdays of every month. Alpha: What’s Life About? If you and/or your friends and family have questions about Jesus or about what Christians believe or why Catholics do this or that, consider attending the Alpha Course this fall. It’s a low-pressure opportunity to enjoy a good meal, watch an en-gaging video, and have a good (did I say “low pressure”?) conversation. No questions are off limits. Please prayerfully consider this for yourself or to invite others. Beginning on Thursday September 13, we will offer the Alpha Course. If you or someone you know has questions about Jesus and/or the Christian faith, please join us for the Alpha Course. We get started at 6:30 each Wednesday. Call the office to register (482-4749) or fill out the registration forms available in the church. Getting Ready for the Ox Roast As the Ox Roast draws near, I want to thank all those who have faithfully, year after year, served the parish and commu-nity to make the Ox Roast such a great success. John Gordon and his team have been meeting for months. They are, as al-ways, looking for volunteers to cover the myriad areas of re-sponsibility that are part of the Ox Roast. Please see the infor-mation in the bulletin about how you might be able to help us serve the parish and community this September 7-9. The Ox Roast is a fellowship and financial opportunity for our parish and community. Please plan to attend and bring your family, friends, and neighbors too. From the Bishop

Retreat Focuses on Mary as Model of Faith Mary, the Mother of Jesus and a woman of faith, lived in dangerous times in a small country occupied by the Ro-man Empire. She has much to say to us, as we deal with the dangers and darkness of our time.

“Mary: Model of Faith for Contemporary Times,” offers par-ticipants the opportunity to explore who Mary is for them in our contemporary world. The retreat begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 24, and ends at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 25. Sister Joan Delaplane, OP – retreat director, and spir-itual director – presents the material on Mary and gives retreatants opportunities to pray together, share with one another, and spend quiet time in reflection.

The cost, including meals and snacks, is $45 for commut-ers, $65 per person for double occupancy, and $85 for sin-gle occupancy. To register, visit www.webercenter.org and click on “programs.” Registrations may also be made by contacting Weber Center at 517-266-4000 or [email protected]. On the Sidewalk - In Front of an Abortion Clinic Often someone will say, years later, still grieving over an abortion, “If only someone had been there” or “I was looking for a sign not to do it.”

We are needed there to pray and offer help. Although some dioceses have trained sidewalk counselors to cover all hours the clinics are open; other places have people who just show up and pray occasionally or on a regular basis. The Abortion Clinic workers themselves say business is always down when people are praying there!

Sidewalk Counselors are people who have waited and prayed for years in front of abortion clinics. Often people say to them,” is it worth it; so, few results for so much time?” Or, “it would be better to work toward large scale programs that could prevent the need for abortion.” Pope Benedict reminds us though that” planning for the future is love for those most distant. It does not replace love of neighbor, of those who are closest.” He says we must nev-er forget the individual that is here today before us and is in grave risk and need. If we are not here today, tomorrow is too late for this mother and her unborn child.

So, is it worth it to stand & pray there for hours, days, weeks or as part of a collective large effort such as 40 Days for Life or the Marches for Life? Does it accomplish very much?

St. John Chrysostom gives us the answer: “Nothing in the world equals the value of a single soul.”
