PROBLEMS THAT MAY AFFECTTHE VEHICLE EMISSIONS

If any of the following symptoms areobserved, immediately have your vehicleinspected and repaired by your Localaprilia Dealer.Symptoms:

Difficult starting or stalling after starting. Irregular idle. Misfiring or backfiring during

acceleration. After-burning (backfiring). Poor engine performance, degraded

Observe all rules of the road. Particularlypay attention to all warning, regulatory andinformational signs.Avoid showing off (i.e., popping wheelies).Especially observe speed limits, rememberthat road conditions change with theweather and wet and icy pavements areparticularly dangerous for vehicles,especially if you are r iding too fast.Remember that automobile drivers have ahard time seeing two wheeled vehicles, soalways give the automobile the right ofway, even if it is legally yours.Before changing lanes, look over yourshoulder to make sure that the way isclear. Do not rely exclusively on the rear-view mirror: you may miscalculate the

distance and speed of a vehicle, or youmay even not see it at all.

Avoid obstacles that could damage thevehicle or make you lose control.Do not tailgate, do not attempt to increaseyour gas mileage by following in the slipstream of cars or trucks in front of you.

In case of accident motorcycles, scooters

and mopeds do not provide the samedegree of protect ion ensured byautomobiles. The legs, in particular, areexposed the r isk o f be ing in jured.However, the additional installation of legguards may actually increase the risk ofinjuries and their seriousness in case ofaccident.Do not install leg guards available on themarket of spare parts and accessories.Non-compliance with these instructionsmay result in serious injuries or evendeath.

Always r ide with both hands on thehandlebars and feet on the footrests.Never shift gear without using the clutch, ifthe vehicle is so equipped. Do not operatethe shift lever or the other controlssuddenly or abruptly. Such misuse candamage the internal components of thevehicle and consequently cause seizure,loss of control, accidents and seriousinjuries or even death.Remain in the seat when you are riding. Donot stand up or attempt to stretch while youare riding your vehicle. If you need to rest,pull over to the side of the road when it canbe safely done.

It is very important to your safety that yougive full attention to the riding task. Watchwhat you are doing, do not allow yourself tobe distracted by other cars, people orthings on the roadside, etc. Never smoke,eat, drink, read, etc. while riding yourvehicle. If you must consult a map, pull

over when it can be done safely.Use only the vehicles specific fuels andlubricants indicated in the LUBRICANTCHART; check the oil, fuel and coolantlevels regularly.If the throttle sticks open, it may cause acollision with another vehicle, or an upset.

If the throttle sticks, kill the engine with theengine stop switch located on the righthandlebar.

Do not attempt to restart the engine untilthe throttle has been repaired and worksperfectly. Failure to obey this warning canlead to a runaway with seriously injuries oreven death.

WARNINGIn the event of a throttle stickingemergency, always kill the engine usingthe engine stop switch located near thethrottle grip on the right handlebar.Never use your vehicle if the throttle

does not automatically fully return tothe idle position when the throttle gripis released. Contact your Local apriliaDealer for repairs. Failure to heed thiswarning can lead to a serious accidentand subsequent injury or even death.

If you and your vehicle are involved in anaccident, insure that there has been nodamage to the control levers, tubes, wires,braking system and other vital parts. If yourvehicle is involved in an accident, take itimmediately to your Local aprilia Dealerwho has the equipment and knowledge to

check for accidental damage which maycompromise your safety.

Your aprilia dealer is ready and able tohelp you with any safety problems that youmight have, but of course it is necessaryfor you to report any malfunctions to yourmechanic in order for him to help you.

Do not use your vehicle if it is damaged. Adamaged vehicle may become unstable orpresent other problems which can increase

the risk of accident, and therefore ofserious injury or even death.

Do not attempt to modify the position,angle or color of your license plate. Do notcover it with even a clear plastic covering.Do not modify any of the safety equipmentof your vehicle, especially such safetyrelated items as directional indicators, rearview mirrors, lights or horns.

Any modification to your vehicle willinvalidate the warranty.

Do not modify your engine in an attempt toincrease the horsepower. This can result inirreparable damage to the engine, as wellas degradation of the performance andhandling of the vehicle which could lead toan upset, and serious injury or even death.

Have your vehicle repaired only withoriginal parts, and use only original apriliaor aprilia approved accessories. The useof aftermarket accessories and parts canseriously compromise the safety of yourvehicle as well as its performance andserviceability. Any modification which

affects performance or safety voids yourwarranty completely.

Tampering with the emissions or noisecontrol systems on your vehicle is againstthe law, and can be punished by largefines.In some jurisdictions, it can even lead tothe confiscation of your vehicle.

Never race other vehicles with yourvehicle.Brake with both the front and rear brakes.The use of one brake only for suddenbraking may cause the vehicle to skid ormake the rider lose control of the vehicleitself.

When riding down a steep hill, use theengine as a brake by selecting the samegear, or a lower gear, than you would useto climb the hill. Use front and rear brakessparingly.

Always ride at the appropriate speed andavoid unnecessary hard acceleration. Thisnot only is safer, but also reduces fuelconsumption and increases the life of thevehicle.

If you must ride your vehicle in rainyweather, or on loose surfaces, remember

that traction is greatly reduced. Underthese conditions, all handling of the vehiclemust be done gradually and smoothly.Sudden acceleration, braking or turningmay make you lose control of your vehicle.When traction is reduced, accelerate andslow using your vehicles engine brakinginsofar as possible. Avoid rapid, harshapplication of the brakes.

Gradually open and close the throttle, toavoid spinning or skidding the rear wheel.On rough road surfaces, slow down andride with particular care.

Try to avo id w ide open throt t leaccelerations, unless they are necessary

Do not tamper with the muffler system orthe emissions control system of yourvehicle. This is not only bad for theenvironment, it can subject you to seriouspenalties.

CLOTHING

Before riding your vehicle, ensure that yourriding gear is in good condition. To beeffective, your helmet must fit properly, andthe visor or other eye protection must beclean.

Both research and experience have shownthat drivers of other vehicles often do notsee vehicles or riders. In order to makeyourself more conspicuous to thesedrivers, wear bright reflective clothing,such as a reflective vest, or clothing withreflective sections sewn into the jacket,pants and gloves. Be particular aware ofapproaching automobiles and trucks thatmight be trying to turn left in front of you.Many vehicle accidents are caused by anopposing automobile driver making a leftturn without warning in front of the vehicle.

Inevitably, the driver will look right at you,and yet swear that they did not see youbefore they turned directly into your path.Ride alert!Wear protective clothing, preferably in lightand/or reflecting colors. In this way you willmake yourself more visible to the other

drivers, thus notably reducing the risk ofbeing knocked down, and you will be moreprotected in case of fall.Always wear your crash helmet. Manyaccidents are fatal because of injuries tothe head.

This clothing should be very tight-fittingand fastened at the wrists and ankles.Strings, belts and ties should not behanging loose; prevent these and otherobjects from interfering with driving bygetting entangled with moving parts ordriving mechanisms.

Avoid installing accessories that coverhorns or lights or that could impair theirfunctions, limit the suspension stroke andthe steering angle, hamper the operation ofthe controls and reduce the distance fromthe ground and the angle of inclination inturns.

Avoid using accessories that hamperaccess to the controls, since this canpro long react ion t imes dur ing anemergency.Fairings and windshields installed on thevehicle may produce aerodynamic forcesthat will affect the stability of the vehicleduring use, especially at high speeds.

Make sure that anything you carry on yourvehicle is securely attached, and cannotcome lose and jam the wheels, forks, etc.Do not install any electrical accessories,and do not modify the electrical system ofyour vehicle. Anything that could cause anelectrical overload or other fault could

cause the vehicle to suddenly stop, thelights to dim or quit, or the horn and othersafety accessories not to work. Use onlygenuine aprilia accessories.

LOAD

Do not ride with your crash helmet hungfrom the strap because it could easily foulthe wheels, fenders, or forks, causing anupset and subsequent serious injury oreven death.Carry a passenger only if your vehicle isequipped with passenger footrests,handgrips for the passenger to hold on to,and a passenger saddle.When carrying a passenger, rememberthat your vehicles handling is degraded,that the brakes are less efficient, and thecenter of gravity is higher and further to therear.

This makes it more likely that the frontwheel wi l l come up of f the ground,especially on acceleration. Therefore, youshould avoid hard acceleration and hardbraking. Many accidents are caused byinexperienced riders carrying passengers.Remember that allowance must be made

for the extra weight of the passenger for alldriving maneuvers.

Avoid abrupt and excessive acceleration.Always slow down in time and calculatelonger s topp ing and manoeuvr ingdistances. Non-compliance with theseinstructions may lead to the overturning ofthe vehicle or to other accidents withconsequent serious injuries or even death.

Never carry loosely packaged items, makesure that everything that you carry on yourvehicle is carefully secured.Do not carry packages which protrude fromthe luggage rack or which cover any of thesignal lights, the headlight, or the horn.

Never carry animals or children on theglove compartment or on the luggage rack.Never exceed the labeled maximum loadfor each saddlebag.Overloading your vehicle seriously reducesits stability and maneuverability and canlead to an upset with subsequent seriousinjury or death.

INSTRUMENT AND INDICATOR TABLE

Right direction indicator warning light( )

It blinks when the direction indicators are on.

2 stroke oil reserve warning light ( ) It comes on when the ignition switch is in position and the start push button is pressed, thuschecking the proper functioning of the bulb. If the light does not come on during the starting, provide forreplacing the bulb.

If the warning light comes on and does not go out after the start push button

has been released, or if it comes on during normal functioning, this means that:

the 2 stroke oil reserve is being used; in this case, top up the 2 stroke oil tank, see page 46 (2STROKE OIL);

the engine oil pressure in the circuit is insufficient. In this case stop the engine immediatly and

contact on Aprilia Official Dealer.

Engine oil pressure warning light( )

It comes on every time the ignition switch is brought to position and the engine is not running, thus testingthe correct operation of the bulb. If during this phase the lamp does not turn on, it must be replaced.The warning light must go off when the engine is running.

If the warning light comes on during the normal running of the engine, this

means that the oil pressure in the circuit is insufficient. In this case,immediately stop the engine and contact your aprilia Official Dealer.

Total kilometres odometer It indicates the total number of kilometres covered.

Speedometer It indicates the driving speed.

Parking light and low beam warning light( )

It comes on when the lights are on.

High beam warning light ( ) It comes on when the headlight is in high beam position.

Low fuel warning light ( ) It comes on when the quantity of fuel left in the tank is about 0.5gal (2 ) .

FUEL

WARNINGThe fuel used for internal combustionengines is extremely inflammable andin particular conditions it can becomeexplosive. It is important to carry outthe refuelling and the maintenance

operations in a well-ventilated area,with the engine off. Do not smoke whilerefuelling or near fuel vapors, in anycase avoid any contact with nakedflames, sparks and any other heatsource to prevent the fuel from catchingfire or from exploding.Further, prevent fuel from flowing out ofthe fuel filler, as it could catch fire whengetting in contact with the red-hot

surfaces of the engine.In case some fuel has accidentally beenspilt , make sure that the area iscompletely dry before starting thevehicle.Since petrol expands under the heat ofthe sun and due to the effects of sunradiation, never fill the tank to the brim.Screw the plug carefully after refilling.Avoid any contact of the fuel with theskin and the inhalation of vapors; do

not swallow fuel or pour it from areceptacle into another by means of atube.

The vehicle is provided with a separatemixer that makes it possible to mix petrolwith oil for the lubrication of the engine, seepage 108 (LUBRICANTS CHART ).The reserve is indicated by the coming onof the 2 stroke oil reserve warning light positioned on the dashboard,see

page 36 and 37 (ARRANGEMENT OF THECONTROLS / INSTRUMENTS ANDINDICATORS).

CAUTIONThe use of the vehicle without 2 strokeoil causes serious damages to theengine.

If you run out of oil in the 2 stroke oiltank or if the 2 stroke oil pipe has been

removed, it is necessary to contact anaprilia Official Dealer, who will providefor bleeding the circuit.

This operation is indispensable, sincethe operation of the engine with air inthe 2 stroke oil system may causeserious damages to the engine itself.

To top up the 2 stroke oil tank, proceedas follows:

u Lift the saddle, see page 43(UNLOCKING / LOCKING THESADDLE).

u Remove the plug (1).

CHECKING

To check the brake fluid level, proceed asfollows:

NOTE Position the vehicle on firm andflat ground.

u Position the vehicle on the centre stand.u Rotate the handlebar, so that the fluid

contained in the brake reservoir isparallel to the MIN mark stamped onthe glass gauge (2).

u Make sure that the fluid contained in thereservoir exceeds the MIN mark

stamped on the glass gauge (2).MIN = minimum level.

If the fluid does not reach at least the MINmark:

CAUTIONWhen the disc pads wear out, the levelof the fluid decreases progressively tocompensate for their wear.

ADJUSTING THE BRAKE

u Measure the distance covered by thelever before the brake starts its brakingaction. The idle stroke at the end of thebrake lever must be about 0.4 in (10mm).

To adjust the clearance, proceed asfollows:u Force the spring (1) to reach the seat (2)

of the threaded rod.u Lock the rotation of the threaded rod by

acting on the appropriate seat (2) with aspanner.

u Act on the adjuster (3).u Put on the brake repeatedly and make

sure that the wheel turns freely after the

brake has been released.u Check the braking efficiency.

The fact that the adjuster (3) can betightened completely or the indicator (4)is positioned beyond the referencetooth (5) indicates that the brake shoesare worn; in this case, see page 73(CHECKING THE BRAKE SHOE WEAR).

TYRES

This vehicle is provided with tubeless tires.

WARNINGPeriodically check the tire inflationpressure at room temperature, seepage 104 (TECHNICAL DATA).

If the tires are hot, the measurement isnot correct.Carry out the measurement especiallybefore and after long rides.

If the inflation pressure is too high, theground unevenness cannot bedampened and is therefore transmittedto the handlebar, thus compromisingthe driving comfort and reducing road

holding turns.

If, on the contrary, the inflation pressureis too low, the tire sides (1) are undergreater stress and the tire itself may slipon the rim or it may become loose, withconsequent loss of control of thevehicle.In case of sudden braking the tirescould even get out of the rims.Further, the vehicle could skid whileturning.

Check the surface and the wear of thetires, since tires in bad conditions canimpair both the gr ip and thecontrollability of the vehicle.

Some types of tires homologated forthis vehicle are provided with wearindicators.There are several k inds of wearindicators.For more information on how to checkthe wear, contact your Dealer.Visually check if the tires are worn andin this case have them changed.

I f the t i res are hold, even i f not

completely worn out, they may becomehard and may not ensure good roadholding.In this case, have the tires changed.

Change the tire when it is worn out or incase of puncture on the tread side, if thepuncture is larger than 5 mm.

After repairing a tire, have the wheelsbalanced.

Do not install tires with air tube on rimsfor tubeless tires, and viceversa.

Due to cata ly t ic react ion, the h ightemperature reached by the exhaust gasesmakes for the burning of the oil particles,thus keeping the silencer clean andeliminating exhaust fumes.

To have the catalytic converter functioncorrectly and for long time and to reducepossible problems regarding the soiling ofthe thermal unit and of the exhaust, it isnecessary to avoid covering long distanceswith the engine running at constantly lowrpm.It is sufficient to alternate these periodswith periods in which the engine runs atrelatively high rpm, even if only for a fewseconds, but rather frequently.

What has been stated above assumesparticular importance for the cold startingof the engine: in this case, in order to reacha rpm regime sufficient to enable thepriming of the catalytic reaction, justmake sure that the temperature of thethermal unit has reached at least 122 F(50 C); which generally occurs a fewseconds after starting the engine.

CAUTIONDo not use leaded petrol, since itcauses the destruction of the catalyticconverter.

EXHAUST SILENCER

prohibit: the removal or rendering inoperative by

STARTING

WARNINGExhaust gases contain carbon

monoxide, which is extremely noxious ifinhaled.Avoid starting the vehicle in closed or

badly-ventilated rooms. Failure toobserve this precaution can result inloss of consciousness and death byasphyxiation.

Do not sit on the vehicle when starting.

Do not start the vehicle while it is on theside stand.

ELECTRIC STARTING

u Position the vehicle on the centre stand.u Set the engine stop switch (1) to (where required by local legislation).u Make sure the dimmer switch (2) is set to

u Turn the key (3) and set the ignitionswitch to .

CAUTIONAt this time the engine oil pressure

warning light on the dashboardwill light up, and stay on until theengine is started.

STARTINGWITH FLOODED ENGINE

The engine may flood due to a faulty startor due to excess fuel in the intake ducts.To purge a flooded engine:

u Press the start push button (5) for afew seconds (this runs the engine underno load) with the throt t le gr ip (6)completely turned to (Pos. A).

STARTING WITH COLD ENGINE

If the ambient temperature is very low(near to or below 0C) it may be difficult tostart the engine at the first attempt.

If this occurs:u Hold down the start push button for five

seconds (5) with the acceleratorgrip turned to (Pos. A) (6).

If the engine starts.

u

Release the throttle grip (6).u If the idling rpm is unstable, turn thethrottle grip (6) repeatedly by a smallamount.

If the engine does not start.

Wait for a few seconds and repeat theSTARTING WITH COLD ENGINEprocedure.

u If necessary, remove the spark plug, seepage 84 (SPARK PLUG) and check forhumidity.

u Clean and dry it off if necessary.Before refitting:

NOTE Place a clean cloth on thecylinder next to the spark plug seat, toprotect against oil.

u Press the start push button (6) andrun the starter for about 5 secondswithout accelerating.

STARTINGAFTER A LONG PERIOD OF INACTIVITY

If the vehicle has not been used for a longtime, it is possible that starting fails due toa partially drained fuel supply.

In this case:u Press the start push button (5) for

around 10 seconds to a l low thecarburetor float chamber to fill.

CAUTIONDo not move off quickly when theengine is cold.To reduce polluting emissions and fuelconsumption, warm up the engine byriding at a moderate speed for the firstfew kilometers.

u Do not accelerate and deceleraterepeatedly as this can lead to losingcontrol of the vehicle.

WARNINGWhen braking, operate both brakes foreven deceleration, with a gradualpressure on the brake levers.Using only the front or rear brakereduces braking performance, and maylock up a wheel and lose road holding.

If stopping on an uphill, deceleratecompletely and use the brake to holdthe vehicle stationary.Using the engine to hold the vehiclesteady can overheat the speed variator.

WARNINGBefore entering a curve, reduce yourspeed and brake, then ride through thecurve at constant speed or slightlyaccelerating; do not brake fully: this willvery likely lead to skidding.

Using the brakes continuously ondownhills can overheat the brake padsand reduce braking performance.Exploit engine compression by using

both brakes intermittently. Do not ridedownhill with the engine off.

WARNINGOn a wet or slippery surface (snow, ice,mud, etc.), ride at a low speed, withoutsudden braking or turns which couldcause the vehicle to skid and fall over.

Pay attention to obstacles or variations

in the road surface.Loose surfaces, tracks, manholecovers, painted road signals, metalplates used on construction sites, allbecome slippery in the rain, and shouldbe approached with caution, drivingevenly and with the vehicle as uprightas possible.
