Gonzaga Preparatory School has a 131 year tradition of excellence in academics, activities and ministry. As you walk through the doors of Gonzaga Prep, you discover a vibrant community with a strong sense of identity and purpose. Students, faculty, and staff are dedicated to this sense of mission whether it is in the classroom, the chapel, the fine arts center or on the playing fields.

Over a century ago, in September of 1887, Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J. along with eight other faculty members opened the doors of Gonzaga High School. Since then, the Spokane community has been served by one of the finest educational institutions in the Inland Northwest − a school that has been unmatched in developing leaders SPIRITUALLY, INTELLECTUALLY, PHYSICALLY AND CULTURALLY.

Throughout its distinguished history, Gonzaga Prep has changed with the times, but the strong belief that students should be guided by the Gospel values of love and justice has endured. Gonzaga Prep continues to challenge those who walk through its doors to realize their potential as lifelong learners and leaders in service to others.

CAMPUS MINISTRYGROW IN FAITHOur Campus Ministry department is founded in Ignatius’ purpose of leading students to the knowledge, love and service of God.

LITURGIESThrough weekly Mass in our Chapel of the Three Companions, all school Masses in the gymnasium, prayer services, and annual retreat programming, students witness their classmates as servant leaders while also learning to find their own place in a faith community as persons for others.

RETREATSStudents attend an annual retreat to nurture their relationship with an unconditionally loving God, as well as to discern their own call to creating the Kingdom of God through their actions.

FRESHMAN - SPARK Students are introduced to the values of our Jesuit community through a day of prayer and play with upper class student leadership so to ignite the desire for Jesuit education.

SOPHOMORE - MONTSERRAT & SOLVERE Students reflect on the topics of individual identity and communal responsibility. These are times for untying (solvere) negative self-perceptions and laying down weapons of self-defense (Montserrat) toward becoming a person who cares for self and others (cura personalis).

JUNIOR - SEARCH Students search for meaning and God’s presence both within their own lives as well as within our larger community. Search is a life changing experience of insight into self, relationship with God and peer contexts.

SENIOR - MAGIS Students elect to attend either the Magis retreat, a multi-day retreat focused on the Spiritual Exercises, or choose to attend Ignatian days during school hours. Both programs empower the students to transition their four years of reflection into action beyond Prep.

In sixteenth century Europe, the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius Loyola, developed a course of studies which combined a liberal arts curriculum with Christian teachings. He used the best schools of the day to help model and shape his vision. The primary purpose of education according to Ignatius was

TO LEAD STUDENTS TO THE KNOWLEDGE, LOVE AND SERVICE OF GOD.

We are a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory school firmly rooted in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola. One of the hallmarks of Jesuit education is cura personalis, or care of the individual person. Our faculty and staff show care for each student, while challenging each to reach their greatest potential. We teach our students to care for each other and to show that love through deeds.

When you enroll at Gonzaga Prep you become part of a community that helps each other grow academically, athletically, spiritually, and socially. The Jesuit education you receive at Prep is both transformative and powerful. Each day you will be challenged to go forth

and make the world a better place.

SPOKANE PLUNGE

PROGRAM

We know that service and social justice are interdependent. Our curricular and extracurricular programs work to form ‘Christian leaders spiritually, intellectually, physically, and culturally’ such that they are ‘challenged to fulfill their potential as life-long learners in service to others.’

Our service learning program uses meaningful and effective student service to enrich the student’s transformative academic experience. The Christian Service curriculum is designed to reflect the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, which explores the necessary relationship between experience, reflection, and action – and the important role of context and evaluation in that relationship.

Students will be introduced to Christian Service experientially, in both the classroom and their local community. Paired with their academic coursework, students will be introduced to service and social justice through direct action and project-based learning models.

Students will independently complete 150 hours of service with a community partner, agency, school, or nonprofit of their choosing. Through this service, in conjunction with their Theology coursework, students will develop a deeper understanding of service ethics, submit meaningful personal reflection, and craft a cumulative Social Justice Action Plan.

The Margins program is a application-based immersive study of prominent justice issues in the United States. The six-month program begins in December with weekly meetings that investigate, study, and reflect upon criminal, environmental, and economic justice issues. The program culminates with a Spring Break site visit where students meet with field experts, dialogue with critical voices, and walk with the most marginalized of our society.

Students learn about the most marginalized communities of Spokane, walk with the poor and vulnerable, and practice servant leadership within complex social justice issues. Students will enjoy the insight and reflection of their peers, learn from moments of discomfort, and be challenged to embrace the differences that so often divide us. Spokane Plunge takes place over three days and is open to all students.

EDUCATIONALTECHNOLOGY

Gonzaga Prep is a 1:1 computing school (one device for each student). While our faculty will remain our first and best resource for the education of our students, we are enthused about the level of engagement, interactivity, connectivity, and organization that is enhanced by this technology in our educational program. As students find their place at Gonzaga Prep they will have the best chance of being “transformational leaders” if their existing skills using mobile computing for entertainment and social networking are integrated with a morally and intellectually rigorous Catholic, Jesuit education. The use of iPads enhances both teaching and student learning – and expands the possibilities for creativity, collaboration and exploration.

Enhance student learning and expand the educational environment beyond

the classroom.

DIVERSITY

FAIR SHARE

We welcome qualified young men and women of all races, religions,

socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Our goal is to help each student reach his or her potential and assist families in providing opportunities for a balanced Christian development of their children. Serving the Catholic community, as well as those who share its philosophy and values, the school admits students who are qualified to complete our four-year college prep program. Gonzaga Prep’s academic curriculum is college preparatory, though programs are available for those students needing further assistance in their development of learning and basic skills.

Gonzaga Prep currently enrolls a minority population of 23%, higher than that of Spokane’s local school districts and higher than the 18% minority population in the city of Spokane. The Director of Equity and Inclusion works with our students and staff to prepare the Gonzaga Prep community to effectively engage in a diverse and interdependent world. This takes place through student club work, activities, interpersonal interactions, and curriculum offerings. Gonzaga Prep features an active Diversity Club which participates in many local and state events. The Diversity Club organizes events and brings speakers to our campus.

Fair Share Tuition is a means for Gonzaga Prep to fulfill its mission. Fair Share is an individualized tuition plan which allows families to determine what they can honestly pay toward their student’s actual cost of education at Gonzaga Prep. Information meetings, clear guidelines, and consultation with facilitators help parents determine their “fair share.” This decision involves consideration of parents’ financial resources, and invites their stewardship, the cornerstone of Gonzaga Prep.

Fair Share works because our families value this educational opportunity. They are committed to Gonzaga Prep. For them, this education is a real priority, even when it involves financial sacrifice.

During the spring, parents will be notified of the cost per student and will make an appointment with a Fair Share facilitator. At this meeting, parents will be asked to make a tuition commitment for the coming year based on the income guidelines. All information is kept strictly confidential.
