In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child
who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its
rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this,
he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the
chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the
Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it
has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of
Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall
come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” Matthew 2:1-6

“On the twelfth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me”… Epiphany!
Generations of children and adults know and adore
the “Twelve Days of Christmas” song. Folks enjoy
the challenge of trying to remember every part. It’s a
song that brings to mind the tradition of celebrating
the twelve days of Christmas which begin with
Christmas Day and end on the day of Epiphany,
traditionally celebrated on January 6.
Epiphany comes from two Greek words epi (ehpee)
and phaino (fayno). Together the two words mean “to show forth” or “appear.” In the Epiphany season
the church focuses on showing forth or making known to the whole world the newborn Christ as God in
human flesh. Epiphany uncovers who Jesus is and so forms the foundation for understanding what He
did for us during the Lent and Easter seasons.
Four events from Jesus’ life are highlighted through the readings during Epiphany:
1.) The visit of the Magi to Jesus sometime after his birth (Matthew 2:1-12),
2.) The baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:4-11; Luke 3:15-17, 21-22),
3.) The miracle of changing water into wine at the wedding of Cana (John 2:1-11)
4.) The transfiguration of our Lord (Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:2-9; Luke 9:28-36)
The theme of “making Christ known to all nations” is found in the account of the Magi and continues to
show itself in the other readings during the Epiphany season.
The same theme comes to our doorstep as members of the church. We’re invited not only to recall the
truth that Jesus died and rose for the whole world but to act on it by witnessing to all people, including
those across the street, in our family, in the same aisle of the grocery store, and in the cubicle next to us.
We can and must take seriously this Epiphany theme of “making Christ known” by focusing on Jesus’
way of witnessing.
In his book, “Speaking of Jesus: Finding the Words for Witness” (Fortress Press, 1982), Richard Lischer
highlights five ways that Jesus Himself spoke the gospel to others. We can use these five ways as an
example when applying the theme of Epiphany to our lives. We can also use these five ways as a mirror
in which we see how we have often failed to “give a reason for the hope we have in Christ” (1 Peter
3:15). As a result, we can turn to the cross and receive God’s forgiveness in Christ. Jesus’ five modes
of communicating the gospel, according to Lischer, are paraphrased as follows:
1.) Dialogic:
He was an active listener and used the questions of the other person as a way to understand that person and probe that person’s heart (Mark 10:17-18).
2.) Holistic:
Jesus was concerned for the whole person—body and soul. He forgave the sick and healed the
sinners. And so we are called to forgive others (Matthew 18), continuing the ministry of
reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:10-19).
3
3.) Situational:
Jesus was “on location.” He went to where the people were—the bank, the city park, the local
store, the neighborhood—and reached out to them in their life situations (Matthew 4:18-25; Luke
19:1-10). He didn’t wait for them to come to church. And so we can bring the gospel of all healing,
peace, and comfort to people.
4.) Simple Language:
Jesus communicated in simple language and often spoke in parables employing common,
everyday objects from the life and work of the people to make His point (Matthew 13; John 7:37-
39).
5.) Decisive:
Jesus moved people to repentance (Mark 1:15). We often hear the saying, “Jesus loves you just
the way you are.” This is true! However, He also has no plans of leaving us “the way we are.”
This is how much he loves us.
I pray that all of you have a blessed Epiphany season. Celebrate it with “Epiphany parties” or other
traditional celebrations like “the King’s cake,” “the Magi-chalk blessing,” or the “Epiphany candlelight” (you
can do an internet search to learn more about these traditions). In the middle of all of these celebrations
though, I pray that we also “become all things to all men” (1 Corinthians 9:22) as we make Jesus known
to our family members, our friends, neighbors, and our coworkers. May we join the shepherds on that first
Christmas to glorify and praise God for all the things we have heard and seen (Luke 2:20).
In HIS love, Pastor Hill

From the Afterschool Program for January 2014:
Hi everyone! Here is a letter that went home to the parents of the After School Program to update them on the process we are going through with our building program. I thought it would be good to share it with you.
***************************************************************
Dear Parents,
Everyone is delighted to see our construction is moving along. As you may already know, it has taken us much longer than expected. It has been a learning experience for all of us as; we have experienced many delays in the process of our building. We are learning that the time it takes to get things done when dealing with
architects, city inspections and permits is longer than anyone could have ever thought.
I can assure you that we will be able to be up and running when January comes under the new Heritage program. Our bathrooms are just about complete and soon the office will be completed both on the outside and in. We plan on using the chapel, and conference rooms again as well as the new outside covered area while our building moves along in our building process.
Please keep Grace of Calvary in your prayers as we move further in our building project. All of the extra permits and changes that the city has required have put our project at a much greater cost than expected. We thank the parents who have stepped forward to offer to help us as we continue to make Grace of Calvary After School better for the children in our program. If you have any questions or concerns about our building, or feel you may be able to help in some way, please speak to me at any time.
Anna Marie Hill Grace of Calvary After School Care
May God bless you all in this New Year with Health and Happiness!
From everyone at Grace of Calvary After School Care. ********************************************************************************************************* Dear Sisters in Christ:
Let us honor Christmas in our hearts, and try to keep it all the year.
Our speaker in December said, "A good way to begin is to take time to be Silent. How is your relationship with Jesus at this busy season? Yes it's too cold to walk in the garden, but you can sit by the window with a cup of tea and listen for His voice. What purpose does he still need you to fulfill? What visions can he tell you for Church Women United in the Foothills? What reconciliations has he laid upon your heart? STOP! Turn your thoughts to Jesus your life, your truth, your way. He is the reason for the season, not the snow, not the gifts, not the secular music.
‘T’was Love for you that came down at Christmas.”

MAKING 2014 A GREATER YEAR OF OUTREACH
The New Year is a time of making resolutions. Some resolutions are made and kept, while others are made and broken. But most all resolutions are made in good faith to become a reality. Let us, each of us, make some Faith resolutions in faith, for faith, to God, ourselves and our church! Will YOU make some Faith resolutions for 2014? Here are some suggestions: Faithfully invite family & friends to join you in worship at church. Faithfully volunteer for a committee, program and put your faith into action. Faithfully support our church's efforts in ministry by:
Participating Being open to new ideas Expressing what you like Expressing what you need.
Expressing what you don’t like in a constructive manner. Volunteering to lead or create.
What other ways can you think of that you and others at Grace of Calvary can Faithfully resolve to make our Mission and Ministry a greater reality in 2014 with love and dedication of serving our Lord?
LAY MINISTRY - Beginning With Prayer Lay ministry is a voice that beckons us to a commitment to serve our Lord. We are ambassadors for Christ. The word 'layman' means ' the People' and the church means ' the whole people of God'. Lay ministry is full time for all who take seriously the claim of Jesus Christ upon all of life. We are equally responsible for being and doing according to the gifts we have. Come and share your gifts as we share the love of our Savior as we minister each day. As we begin with prayer, let us joyfully respond as a church alive with the Gospel, where together we discover the height, the depth and the width of Christ's love. So jointly we walk, love and serve together as Christians in community. We live in community, among the communion of saints. That is our creed. And that, too, is our hope. For God loved the world, the community, so much, that he gave his only Son to die for us - for all of us.
Glory to God In the Highest! In His Love, Anita

One of my favorite films is a cheesy little movie called 10,000 Years B.C. Around the middle of the movie the wise hunter shares his wisdom with the younger hunter and tells him: 'A good man draws a circle around himself and cares for those within; his woman, his children. Other men draw larger circles and bring within their brothers and sisters. But some men have a greater destiny. They must draw around themselves a circle that includes many, many more.
Nelson Mandela drew several circles in his lifetime. God was with him in that prison. God was with him when he was transformed into a man who could ask the following questions:
"Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Who does it include? Who does it exclude? What does love demand?" (Rev. Robert Davis) This is the man who taught his countrymen, white and black how to forgive and love unconditionally. How to be an example to the world at large.
Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
How many circles have we drawn in our lives? Have we allowed God to use us to the fullest? In the organizations we participate in, how big are their circles? What has love demanded of us? Have a Blessed New Year!

We cordially invite you to worship God with us and celebrate the New Life God gives us in the raising of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Children are an integral part of our worship service. We now have Children’s Church during Sunday worship. Worship activities and Bible story books are available for children aged 3 thru 4th grade to use during all services. A Parents’ Room, with sound, is available adjoining the sanctuary.
Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church & Preschool, a family oriented church founded in 1956, is a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America supporting programs such as Lutheran Social Services of California, the Alhambra Retirement Community, the Lutheran Food Bank in West Covina, The Shepherd’s Pantry, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration Services, and Habitat for Humanity International.
The Preschool is an exciting, educational ministry open to all children in the community. Daily classes are taught by a faculty dedicated to both the educational and spiritual growth of the children. The classes include a computer lab for the children. Weekly chapel is led by the Pastor or Music Director. The Preschool addresses the social aspect of the children’s growth from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Active members of the congregation may receive up to a 25% discount off tuition.
Our Youth Ministry offers activities including Summer Camp at El Camino Pines, Christmas Caroling to the sick and homebound, other Christian service projects and just getting together for the fun of it!
The women’s group, Miriam Circle, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. They celebrate by enjoying lunch and pursuing educational and spiritual growth. Miriam Circle provides meals for shut-ins, funds for various ministries, as well as family visits to those in need.
