FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS WITH FIRST ANNUAL “ORIOLE BOWL”

Last Friday was high school football’s “zero week” and featured season openers for many teams across the state of Iowa. Springville chose the open evening to host what Coach Martin labeled the inaugural Oriole Bowl. Fans were able to enjoy a nice fall evening at Allison Field and catch a glimpse of what the 2011 Oriole team is going to look like. From the kicking game to the red zone defense, the Orioles appear to be a team that should provide plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” this fall. The leg strength of Brian Allsup and Drake Coonrod are going to give our special teams ample opportunities to make big plays. It didn’t take long to realize our running game is going to be led by Drake Coonrod and Elias Nissen with an option or two to a wide out like Jake Hulett. The big guys up front include Nathaniel Randolph, Tyler Stewart, Selby Ballantyne, Drew Hoskins

and Jake Hulett. They’ll be busy protecting Zach Scriver on the offensive end, as Scriver looks to be the starting quarterback. This years team features five seniors, two of which were recovering from nagging injuries—Brandon Mysak and Caleb Anderson. Both guys will line up on the outside as receivers. Nathaniel Randolph is who Coach Martin calls his “vocal leader” on the line. Zach Scriver will run the Oriole offense at the QB spot and newcomer Mikkel Jensen, a foreign exchange student looks to get his fair share of playing time. This year should feature a nice combination of experience and new talent to give our community plenty of excitement this season. Coach Martin looks forward to a tough schedule though as “there will be no "easy" games this season. Our district, like usual has some top teams in the state. Preston is ranked in the top 3 and West Central is in the top 5. Also Lansing Kee has some potential to be a contender for a district title. We also have 2 non-district games against NE Hamilton

(ranked #2 right now) and Tripoli who is usually tough. We will have to be prepared every Friday night in order to do well.” When asked what he

looks for this season, Coach said, “First and foremost to be competitive. That does not always mean coming out with a win, but having a chance to. We also think that we are going to be one of the most physical teams in the district, teams will go home knowing they played Springville that night. As every team has a goal, we want to make districts. If we execute our game plan for 4 quarters we think these things are obtainable and with this, wins will come. Along with this, we hope to build some quality character young men not only on the football field but also in school and in the community. To us, that is what is important to this program...having everyone in Springville be proud to be apart of our football team.” It all gets underway with a little road trip to Midland this Friday evening for a Varsity game only. Kick off is at 7pm as the O’s take on an Eagle team that whooped Tri-County Thornburg last week, 46-15. It wouldn’t hurt to practice those “oohs” and “aahs” on the drive over. Say it with me… “Ooh”… “Aah”.

GOOD TO KNOW… There’s pretty crazy High school mascots out there, and apparently Oriole Pride readers enjoy hearing of them. Extensive research has revealed even more high schools with unique nicknames. Here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary mascot. The Avon Old Farms is all male, prep school located in Avon, Connecticut. 400 boys in grades 9-12 attend the boarding school that features a Winged Beaver as their mascot—Winged is pronounced “wing-ed”. Their athletic programs include the traditional sports of course, as well as Riflery, Skiing, Squash, Hockey and Lacrosse.

JV IMPRESSES IN THE ORIOLE BOWL

Looks as if we are in for another great year of action on Allison field. The Oriole JV team has retained the speed they are so known for, and they picked up some size too. The boys will Begin their season with a home game against Midland on Monday, the 29th. Game time is 6:30 and the same rule applies for JV games— the “oohs” and “aahs” will be plentiful.

YOUTH FOOTBALL GETS UNDERWAY SATURDAY The 5th/6th grade Little O’s will kick off this Saturday with a jamboree at Clear Creek Amana. The boys will scrimmage Solon at 10:45 and then face an Iowa City team at 2:50. The boys first game is at Iowa City on the 11th of September and their first home game is September 25th at 3:30. Springville will also be fielding a 3rd/4th grade tackle team this fall. They’ll be coached by Beau Zaruba and Joe Heyer and begin practice next Tuesday.

CROSS COUNTRY IS UNDERWAY Head Cross Country Coach Steve Pershing has 3 seniors this year to pave the way for another competitive season on the hills and pathways of the Tri-Rivers Conference. Arden Betzer, Raymond Colony and Brien Hanson will lead the Oriole/Wildcat runners in pursuit of another successful year. At Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, Betzer finished second with a time of 16:11. Oriole junior, Angie Hoogland came in at 11th with a time of 19:04 and Junior foreign exchange student Shinichro Tatsumi finished 32nd in a time of 22:59 . Their next meet is Tuesday when they compete in the Williamsburg Invitational.
