One of the most generous and lasting gifts has been the Chuo City Garden at Sutherland which opened in 1993. Construction was paid for by the Chuo City Government. In 1994 the Sutherland Shire was hit by its worst bushfire emergency where one person died, two people were seriously injured and 140 houses, a church, four school buildings and a kindergarten were destroyed or damaged. In an expression of sympathy Mayor Yada sent the proceeds of a collection from Chuo City school students to help those who lost their homes and possessions, totalling nearly A$23,000.Other gifts and donations from Chuo City have included 5 million yen in 1996 to celebrate the fifth anniversary between the two councils and again in 2001 to celebrate the 10th anniversary. The funds were put in trust and are used to help fund the student exchange program.

THE SALVATION ARMY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT The Salvation Army is asking Australians to spare a few hours over the weekend of 28-29 May to help collect for the annual Red Shield Doorknock. The Red Shield Doorknock ensures that the Salvation Army can continue to address the underlying factors that affect the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society and help them get back on their feet. By giving just a few hours of your time or donating financially to the Red Shield Doorknock, you can help The Salvation Army provide assistance to Australians doing it tough and give hope to where it’s needed most this year.To participate or donate call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or register online at salvos.org.au/volunteer.

SHIRE FOOD SAFETYCustomers expect the food they buy to be safe to eat. With consumers dining out more and new food trends constantly emerging, it’s more important than ever to increase your food-handling skills and knowledge.Local retail food businesses, Council Environmental Health Officers and NSW Food Authority representatives met in April as part of a Retail and Food Service forum to learn how to instill a culture of food safety in Shire food businesses, to keep food safe and customers free from foodborne illnesses.Common areas of interest for retail and service businesses included topics such as managing allergens, how to get and keep a 5 star rating through the Scores on Doors program; and egg safety – how to reduce the risk of salmonella in your food business. If you have any questions about the meeting or would like further information contact the NSW Food Authority on 1300 522 406 or [email protected].

TREES UNDER POWER LINESSutherland Shire Council and Ausgrid are partnering on a tree removal and replacement program to eliminate problem trees from under power lines. The project will target trees on three of the worst affected streets: Parraweena Road, Taren Point, Menai Road, Menai and Loftus Avenue, Loftus.Trees on these streets require continual pruning to ensure they don’t impact on power lines. To compensate for the removal and offset the impact, Council will undertake a replanting program in nearby locations.Residents in the affected streets will be notified in writing before works begin.

BUNDEENA ACCESS PATHS UPGRADEWorks will begin at Roger Summers and Bernice Forster Park, Bundeena to improve public safety when accessing the ferry wharf. Works will include the installation of seating, bollards, and bins, footpath, seawall, stairs, lighting, pedestrian crossing, drainage and lansdscaping. The project is scheduled to be completed by November, 2016.

NEW PARK & PLAYGROUND FOR BARDEN RIDGEBarden Ridge will soon have a universally accessible park with a playground full of equipment suitable for all abilities. The playground will be fenced and features a scooter track, playground equipment, picnic tables with shelters, an adventure track, bubbler, bike racks and garbage bin.Concept design is underway with construction due to be completed by the end of the year.

NEW WHARF AT SYLVANIASylvania Wharf, or Tom Uglys Bridge Wharf, which offers access to the eastern end of Georges River will soon be replaced with a new structure. The Roads & Maritime Service has provided a NSW Boating Now grant of $125,000 towards the cost of the project. Council will be providing an additional $225,000 in funding, bringing the total to $350,000. Council is seeking community feedback on selects the preferred design. Two options have been designed by Council and approved by RMS.Option 1: Fixed timber wharf This option is in keeping with the existing structure and would offer shade to fishermen. A limitation of this design is its susceptibility to movements of the sandy river bed which restricts water depth at low tide. Option 2: Floating pontoon structure This option for a floating pontoon structure would be located next to the existing boat ramp and would provide excellent access in all tidal conditions as well as deeper water for fishing. Council is seeking feedback from the community on the preferred option by Monday 16 May. Feedback can be sent via email [email protected] or in writing addressed to Sylvania Wharf, Locked Bag 17, Sutherland 1499.
