    This guide explains how to use the Font Administrator tool to manage onts or OpenWindows

    installations and NeWSprint printers.

    Getting Started

    Font Administrator is a graphical tool to assist Solaris OpenWindows users and administratorsin managing onts.

    This chapter explains how to open Font Administrator and describes the main window.

    To Open Font AdministratorTo open Font Administrator:

    1. Click the Application Manager control in the CDE Front Panel's Applications subpanel.

    2. In Application Manager, double-click the System_Admin older.

    3. In the System_Admin older, double-click the Font Administrator icon.

    Or you can enter the ollowing command:

    Font Administrator's main window (Figure 11) appears, displaying a list o onts currently

    installed on the local host. For a description o the main window, see Font Administrator Main

    Window on page 12.

    Note I you run Font Administrator by using an X terminal, Font Administrator manages onts

    on the host system, not on the X terminal. Also, i the onts on the X terminal are dierent rom

    the onts on the host, Font Administrator may not be able to display appropriate sample text tothe X terminal.

    Font Administrator Main Window

    Use the Font Administrator main window to view a list o currently installed onts. You can also

    view attributes or sample text or a ont.

    The Font Administrator main window consists o the ollowing parts:

    Menu Bar Use the menus on the menu bar to access Font Administrator capabilities. The

    menu bar contains the Fonts menu, Options menu, and Help menu.

    Currently Installed Fonts For Use these buttons to choose whether to manage onts or the

    local host, or or a NeWSprint printer.

    Font List The ont list shows the onts that are currently installed, and allows you to select

    a ont or which to view attributes or to delete. To select multiple onts, one method is to

    hold down the Shit key and click the desired onts.

    Sample Text Display The sample text display shows sample text or the currently selected

    ont. You can type directly into this area to view other sample characters.

    Sample Text Point Size Use the Sample Text Point Size option menu to choose a sample

    text size rom the sizes available or the ont. Choose a larger point size or larger text, or

    smaller or smaller text.

    Screen Resolution Use the Screen Resolution option menu to select a dierent display

    resolution or the ont, i available.

    Total disk space occupied To assist you in managing your disk space, Font Administratordisplays the total disk space occupied by the selected ont.

    Fonts Menu

    The Fonts menu lists the ollowing choices:

    Delete Deletes theselectedontor onts.

    Install Installsthe onts youchoose.

    Attributes Displays attributes o the selected ont.

    Find Searches theont listor the ontyou enter.Youcan enter a partialontname.

    Aliases Displays a list o currently installed ont aliases.Exit Quits Font Administrator.

    Options Menu

    The Options menu lists the ollowing choices:

    Modiy Font Path Makes changes to the ont path.

    Set Sample Text Changes the deault sample text.

    Viewing Fonts

    This chapter explains how to view ont lists, aliases, and sample text, and also explains how to

    delete onts.

    To View a List o Fonts

    You can view a list o onts or local OpenWindows installations or or NeWSprint printers.

    For the Local Host

    To view a list o onts installed on the local host:

    1. On the main window, nd the label Currently Installed Fonts For:.''

    2. Click the radio button next to the local host name.

    The main window (Figure 11) displays the list o currently installed onts. For a description o

    the main window, see Font Administrator Main Window on page 12.

    For a NeWSprint Printer

    To view a list o onts installed on a NeWSprint printer on the local print server:

    1. On the main window, nd the label Currently Installed Fonts For:.''

    2. Click the radio button next to NeWSprint Printer.

    3. Use the NeWSprint Printer option menu to select the printer or which you want to manageonts.

    The main window (Figure 11) displays the list o currently installed onts. For a description othe main window, see Font Administrator Main Window on page 12.

    Note You must run Font Administrator as the root user to be able to view and manage printeronts.

    To View SampleTextYou can type in sample text to view or this session only, or you can set the deault sample text.

    For This Session Only

    To see what a word or phrase looks like using the selected ont, type the word or phrase in the

    sample text display area o the main window or Install dialog.

    For a picture and description o the main window, see Font Administrator Main Window onpage 12. For a picture and description o the Install dialog, see To Install Fonts on page 23.

    Setting the Deault Sample Text

    The deault sample text is automatically displayed when you select a ont in the main window orthe Install dialog. For a picture and description o the main window, see Font AdministratorMain Window on page 12. For a picture and description o the Install dialog, see To InstallFonts on page 23.

    To set the deault sample text:

    1. Select Set Sample Text rom the Options menu.

    2. On the Set Sample Text dialog, click in the text box and type the desired text.

    3. Click OK or Apply to save the sample text setting.

    Note Because the deault sample text is a user preerence stored in the user's home directory, itcannot be set or the root user, who has no home directory. To view sample text, the root usertypes in the sample text display area.

    To View Font Attributes

    To view ont attributes:

    1. On the main window, click the ont name or which you want to view attributes.2. Click Attributes.

    The Font Attributes dialog displays the ollowing inormation or the selected ont:

    Font The common name o the ont.

    XLFDName The X logical ont descriptor.

    Location The le system location o the ont.

    Foundry The maker o the ont.

    Character Set The character set used by this ont.

    Spacing Indicates whether the ont is monospaced or proportionally spaced.

    Note The Font Attributes dialog stays up until you click Close, displaying attributes in turn oreach ont you select. To view attributes or additional onts, simply click the onts one at a timein the list on the main window.

    To View Font AliasesTo view ont aliases, choose Aliases rom the Fonts menu.

    The Aliases dialog lists the currently installed aliases. To view attributes or an alias, select thealias and click More. To hide alias attributes, click Less.

    To Find FontsTo search the list o onts:

    1. Choose Find rom the Fonts menu.

    2. On the Find dialog, enter the ont name in the Search For eld.

    3. Click Forward to search rom the selected ont toward the bottom o the list, or clickBackward to search rom the selected ont toward the top o the list.

    4. Click Find to select the next ont name containing the search text, or click Select All to selectall ont names containing the search text.

    To Delete FontsTo delete a ont or onts:

    1. On the main window, select the ont to delete by clicking on its name. To select multipleonts to delete, hold down the Shit key and click the desired onts. For a picture anddescription o the main window, see Font Administrator Main Window on page 12.

    Caution There is no Undo or deleting onts. Beore deleting onts, check that no one needsthe onts you want to delete.

    2. Click Delete.

    3. On the warning dialog, click Delete to conrm the deletion.

    Note To delete onts rom the shared system directory/usr/openwin, you must run FontAdministrator as the root user.

    Making Fonts Available

    This chapter explains how to install onts, modiy the ont path, and use the directory chooser.

    To Install Fonts

    To install onts:

    1. Choose Install rom the Fonts menu.

    3. Use the directory chooser to browse or and select the directory containing the onts you

    want to install. When you nd the directory you want, double-click the directory, and then

    click Choose to display a list o onts in the directory. For more inormation about the

    directory chooser, see To Use the Directory Chooser on page 29.

    Note There may be a pause while Font Administrator searches or onts in the directory you

    choose.

    4. On the Install dialog, select the ont or onts you want to install. I you want to install all the

    onts, click Select All.5. Choose the local host or a printer or which to install onts.

    6. Use the directory chooser to browse or and select the installation destination directory. For

    more inormation about the directory chooser, see To Use the Directory Chooser on

    page 29.

    7. Check that the disk space available is greater than the disk space required.

    8. Click Install.

    Note To install onts to the shared system directory/usr/openwin, you must run Font

    Administrator as the root user.

    To Resolve Conficts

    I there is a conict between a ont you tried to install, and a ont with the same name that has

    already been installed, Font Administrator displays the conict dialog.

    The conict dialog lists the onts you tried to install that already exist on your system.

    To Keep All Fonts

    To keep all o the previously installed onts, click Save.

    To Replace All Fonts

    To replace all onts:

    1. Click Replace All.

    2. Click Save.

    To Replace Selected Fonts

    To Add the Installation Directory to the Font Path

    Asian Font Sets

    In applications that use Asian languages, multiple onts o dierent character sets must be

    grouped together to create an accurate representation o written language on the screen. These

    groupings are calledont sets.

    Font Administrator provides the ability to edit ont sets. First, you can search or ont sets that

    meet your search criteria. Then you can change the onts that make up a ont set, or you can addmissing onts to complete an incomplete ont set.

    This appendix explains how to use Font Administrator to edit Asian ont sets.

    Note The inormation in this appendix only applies to Asian onts users. Disregard this

    inormation i you do not use Asian onts.

    Searching or Font Sets

    To search or ont sets:
