FROM THE PASTOR —

"GIFTS OF GOD "

Whenever something ‘‘new ‘‘ appears - like religious art or vestments - I make an effort to acknowledge the source. In a tightly budgeted parish like ours, that is a form of accountability. In the recent past, generous donors have given us: - a beautiful outdoor Christmas Creche, - an impressive gold-covered Book of the Gospels, - elegant new candelabra, - a painting of The Divine Mercy, - an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, - a framed Fabian Bachrach photograph of Blessed John Paul II,

- several sets of vestments, - and gold-plated and pewter sacred vessels.

Some donors, wish to remain anonymous, others do not. Gifts are given only after consulting the pastor. Thus, we carefully avoid the "Twelve Days of Christmas" syndrome, which can make gift-giving an ordeal of unwanted and unneeded treasures! If I donate something personally, it is always at my own expense. Rarely do I make anonymous gifts to the parish. I feel that makes real anonymous gifts more credible. With that said, let me tell you about new vestments I am presenting to the parish in honor of Blessed John Paul II.

As many people know, our late Holy Father had an intense devotion to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. He loved the Festival of Corpus Christi. In his native Poland, processions through cities and villages not only demonstrated public piety, but became powerful protests against the Godless Communist regime. As Pope, John Paul II revived the centuries’ of old Eucharistic procession through the heart of Rome. He noted that, in the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, the Church "does not only celebrate the Eucharist but solemnly bears it in procession, publicly proclaiming Christ is for the salvation of the whole world." The pageantry and beauty of the Liturgy of Corpus Christi can be truly "sacramental." In the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1667), sacramentals are described as "sacred signs which bear a resemblance … to the sacraments ... (and) signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession the Church.” Ritual is not concern for externals, but for spiritual meaning. Part of the visual impact of the Corpus Christi Procession has always been Eucharistic vestments and liturgical appointments. A few years ago, St. Lambert's Filipino Families presented us with a Eucharistic canopy. The canopy, coincidentally, perfectly matched our altar frontal for the Easter Season. Since then, I have been searching for vestments trimmed in a similar fabric. Recently, I found vestments that were a close match. They were also light weight, which made them more suitable for hot weather. The donated vestments include a chasuable, dalmatic (deacon vestment), a processional cope and humeral veil. A second part of my donation was a set of four, simple, white concelebration chasuables. These can be used for any major celebration when we have visiting concelebrants. A particularly eloquent way to describe Our Lord’s Eucharistic Presence is "THE GIFT OF GOD FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD." The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a dynamic connection between the Gift of God Himself and how· it transforms us. What we receive as a GIFT, we should give as a GIFT. It is my hope that external signs like vestments will remind us that giving for a Christian is not just a duty, but a privilege! -Fr. luczak

As we continue our reflections on the new Roman Missal translation, we next move into the Liturgy of the Word. Except for the Gospel dialogues – ‘The Lord be with you. And with your spirit’ and ‘A reading from the Holy Gospel according to –N-. Glory to you, O Lord’ – nothing will be changing in regard to the Scripture readings, Responsorial Psalm, and Gospel Acclamation. The Profession of Faith, how-ever? Now, THAT’S another story. Perhaps some of the most significant changes will be noticed in the Nicene Creed. “Roman Missal Changes to the Creed: The first change that we encounter in the Nicene Creed is the changing of We to I – from the plural to the singular. This is not to diminish our sense of community but is simply a more accurate translation of the Credo – ‘I believe.’ The reciting of the Creed is a communal act; however, each individual in the assembly is called upon to profess his or her own faith just as he or she did in Baptism. Our individual profession is then joined together with the profession of the whole as-sembly. “Seen and Unseen” Changes in the Roman Missal: Next, the words ‘of all that is seen and unseen’ will become ‘of all things visible and invisible.’ There is a difference between something that is unseen and something that is invisible. Something may be unseen for a number of reason, including an obstacle in our line of vision. Something invisible, however, is clearly unable to be seen with the naked eye, for example, the saints and angels who occupy a place in our wor-ship. They are not just unseen but invisible. “The second part of the Creed, which deals with our beliefs in Jesus Christ, has a number of changes in the new Roman Missal: • ‘the Only begotten Son of God, born of the Father

before all ages’ – the words ‘Only Begotten” also appear in the Gloria and express our belief that Jesus did not simply materialize as the Son of God but was intentionally begotten by the Father as part of his divine plan. The words ‘born of the Father before all ages’ emphasize that Jesus dwelled with the Father before time began.

• ‘consubstantial with the Father’ – this replaces the phrase ‘one in being’ in describing the relationship between the Father and the Son. The early Church labored intensely to find the correct words to define Jesus’ relationship with the Father. Consubstantial, while an unusual word in English, means literally ‘having the same substance,’ which is more techni-cally accurate than ‘one in being.’ To be sure, it’s an unusual word, but then again it is describing someone and something unusual and unique: Je-sus Christ and his relationship with the Father.

• ‘and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin

Mary’ – here, the word incarnate replaces born. To be born describes the moment of birth. To be incar-nate describes the moment of conception: the Word became incarnate – became flesh – in Mary’s womb.

• ‘he suffered death and was buried, and rose again

on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures’ – while the Latin word for suffered implies death, the same is not true in English. As a result, we’ve been using two verbs: suffered and died. Now we will use only one verb – suffered – while adding the word death to make it clear in English that Jesus indeed died. The word accordance with the Scrip-tures is simply more precise than the word fulfill-ment.”

“In the last part of the Nicene Creed, as we profess our faith in the Holy Spirit, we will say ‘with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,’ which is a more precise translation of the Latin than the words ‘worshipped and glorified.’ A little later, instead of say-ing ‘we acknowledge one baptism,’ we will now say ‘I confess one baptism.’ To confess, which means ‘to express belief in,’ is a more forceful expression than to acknowledge because it implies involving both the heart and the head.” “And last but not least, we will say the words ‘I look forward to the resurrection of the dead’ instead of ‘we look for…’ This expresses eagerness as well as confi-dence that the resurrection of the dead is indeed go-ing to happen.”

SPIRITUAL LIFE

WELCOME TO OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS! We are happy that several parishioners from our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, are here to participate in the Noon Mass and Corpus Christi procession today. We welcome them and thank them for helping make this day even more special. Maternity BVM Parish is experiencing a transition. Yesterday, Fr. Tom Pelton, their pastor, celebrated Mass with the parish, followed by a dinner, to mark his retirement at the end of the month. A new pastor has been assigned and we look forward to our continued friendship between our two parishes. Please pray for them and we ask them to pray for us.

BULLETIN SICK LIST While we know that the sick and hospitalized are always to be held in our thoughts and prayers, the parish sick list in the bulletin has gotten quite long as the one month listing policy got a bit away from us. The current list will be taken out after this weekend. Please remember that all names are then in-scribed in the Book of Community Prayer and that we pray for the intentions of the community (including those in the Book of Community Prayer) each weekend during the Masses. Please remember that we cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. The process for calling in names for the bulletin list is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month.
