• Der Konjunktiv II (the subjunctive) is used to express probability or possibility. It expresses ideas or concepts that are contrary to fact and reality. Although there are two ways to make the present tense of the Konjunktiv II (würde [+ infinitive] or the Konjunktiv II forms), würde [+ infinitive] is the form used most frequently in conversation. In this case, the würde form is in second position and the infinitive is at the end of the sentence.

• The present tense forms of the Konjunktiv II are based on the Präteritum forms of the verb. The Konjunktiv II forms of regular verbs are identical to the Präteritum forms in German. To avoid confusion, the würde construction mentioned above (würde [+ infinitive]) is often used.

Letztes Jahr arbeitete er im Kernkraftwerk.Last year he worked (used to work) in the nuclear power plant.

Er arbeitete im Kernkraftwerk, wenn er Geld brauchte.Er würde im Kernkraftwerk arbeiten, wenn er Geld brauchte.

He would work at the nuclear power plant, if he needed money.

• To form the Konjunktiv II of irregular verbs, start with the Präteritum form of the verb, add an Umlaut if the verb stem contains the vowels a, o, or u, and add appropriate endings: –e, –est, –e, –en, –et, or –en. Here are some common irregular verbs in this category.

• If an irregular verb does not have a vowel that takes an Umlaut, then, as with the regular verbs, the verb stem in the Konjunktiv II is identical to the Präteritum form.

Ich ginge den gleichen Weg, wenn sich das Wetter hielte.I would walk the same way, if the weather kept up.

Wenn ihr unterwegs anhieltet, vermiedet ihr zu viel Stress.If you stopped on the way, you would avoid too much stress.

• The conjunction wenn in German expresses the idea of if in English. If the sentence expresses an idea as a statement of fact, use wenn with the indicative to convey the sense of the English word whenever. If the sentence expresses an idea that is improbable or contrary to fact, use wenn with either the Konjunktiv II form or the würde form.

Wenn wir das Glas recyceln, helfen wir der Umwelt.Whenever we recycle glass, we help the environment.

Wenn wir das Glas recycelten, würden wir der Umwelt helfen.If we recycled glass, we would help the environment.
