OVERVIEW

The Discovery Weekend is a spiritual retreat given to SFC members. This weekend event is taken a few months after

the Covenant Orientation course. This retreat, now known as Singles Weekend One, is open to all SFC members.

This course is part of the formation program in CFC Singles for Christ starting on their first year in SFC.

GOALS

The Discovery Weekend’s main goal is to allow single men and women to discover HOW to live PASSIONATE lives.

Each session objective leads the single person to understand, reflect on, and fully embrace the life that God has

given him/her. Further, the participant is empowered to make decisive, God-directed plans for his/her life. With a

retreat-style format brotherhood and sisterhood are further strengthened, especially for those who recently joined the

ministry.

i. At the end of the retreat, the singles must know and believe that they are called for something more, and

that they have the potential to lead a great life.

ii. At the end of the retreat, the singles must take the steps necessary to live the passionate life they are meant

to live.

TALK 1: DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE Expanded Outline

I. Introduction

A. People go through life without direction and they live empty and meaningless lives because they do not know who they are and their life’s purpose. They drift from day to day, from job to job, unable to create something of value because they do not have a sense of identity and purpose.

B. In SFC, we live exciting and powerful lives because we have discovered who we are and our purpose in life. Our highest identity is that we are sons and daughters of God and our purpose in life is to live a life pleasing to God.

C. We live with the conviction that we are loved by God and that He has a beautiful plan for us so that we can live happy and meaningful lives. Apart from God, we know that we will be confused and we become more vulnerable to all kinds of temptation to commit evil.

D. Many of us consider ourselves Christians yet we live weak, meaningless and sinful lives because we are not true to our identity and purpose. Our faith lacks integrity because our intentions and actions do not match what we preach. We fail to witness to the joy and power of the Christian life due to sin: lukewarmness, double-mindedness, and compromise (with evil and unrighteousness.)

II. Preparing Our Personal Mission Statement

A. As single men and women, it is important that we discover early on our true purpose in life so that we can chart our goals in life along this path.

B. A personal mission statement is like a map that will guide us to the real treasure in life. It includes three important elements: 1. Identify your goals 2. Identify your core values 3. Prepare a concrete plan of action

III. Identifying Your Key Goals And Core Values

To be happy and content in life, these are our key goals, and core values to achieve these goals:

A. Key Goal: We want to be successful in our career so that we can live a good live, and provide a good life for the people we care about. Also, we want to support our service to God.

Core Values:

1. As a man or woman of God, I will strive for excellence in my work. 2. I will not compromise my integrity to get ahead in my career. 3. I will not commit anything sinful or unrighteous to achieve success. 4. I will not neglect my family or my service to God for my work.

Page 7: 80999485 SFC Discovery Weekend Manual

7

B. Key Goal: We are called to service and to serve God by serving our families.

Core Values:

1. As a husband/wife, we value the sanctity of marriage and are called to be faithful to our spouse at all times. As a father/mother, we take full responsibility in providing for the needs of the children: protecting them from all danger and dangerous influences, and raising them in the love and fear of God.

2. As children to our parents, we joyfully give care to our elderly and open our homes to them. 3. We value the sanctity of life at all stages of development.

C. Key Goal: We are meant to live meaningful, joyful, and productive lives in the love and service of God. In single blessedness we accept the will of the Father, and offer our best years to him.

Core Values:

1. We commit to live a life of purity and practice chastity as single persons. We believe that sex is a gift from God to be used only in marriage. We reject premarital and extra-marital sex.

2. We will pursue God’s great call for us in mission work.

D. Key Goal: We will promote, preserve and protect the life and mission of Couples for Christ and its Family Ministries.

Core Values:

1. As single persons, we will be faithful to our covenant in CFC Singles for Christ. 2. When married, we will be faithful to our covenant in Couples for Christ. 3. We will make ourselves available to serve wherever and whenever we are called to serve. 4. We will be generous with our time and resources.

IV. Concrete Plan of Action

A. In our career: 1. Identify areas of improvement, growth and development for career promotion and advancement. 2. Identity areas of relationships with subordinates and superiors that we need to improve. 3. Identify habits, attitudes and behavior that are obstacles for growth in our career.

B. In our love life: 1. Actively discern our state of life whether we are for marriage, the single life or religious life. 2. Identify areas that we need to work on to make us ready to move on in our state of life. 3. For committed/serious relationships, here are some concrete steps to take:

a. For the brothers:

• List down the qualities you are looking for in a suitable partner.

• On the basis of these qualities that are important to you, make a list of prospects starting with sisters in SFC (beginning with your chapter).

• Consider women outside of SFC only after you have fully considered the sisters around you. Those you are interested in who are not with SFC you must evangelize first.

• Seek the advice of your elders in your process of discernment.

Page 8: 80999485 SFC Discovery Weekend Manual

CFC SINGLES FOR CHRIST CANADA DISCOVERY WEEKEND MANUAL

8

b. For the sisters: • Also actively discern your state of life.

• If called to the single life, be peaceful in your choice and do not allow yourselves to be pressured or bothered every time you hear talks about love and romance, which is normal for the great majority of singles.

• If called to marriage, try to make yourself more appealing by developing your personality, being friendlier, smiling more often, and making yourself visible in all SFC activities, especially retreats like this one.

In our service in SFC, we will do our best as household heads or unit heads, as members of the music ministry, or whatever tasks are given to us. We will not refuse any service that is given to us without any valid reason. There are still a lot of minor points that we can include in our mission statement, which is also our statement of purpose and direction.

V. Conclusion

A. We live a life of power if we have a clear purpose in life. It will spare us the confusion, the diversions, and the mistakes that we will make that might have serious consequences. We will avoid the fate of the Israelites who wandered for 40 years in the desert because they were not true to their purpose.

B. We do not have to drift through life like many of our friends are doing because they have no clear purpose, and they continue to compromise with sin and evil.

C. Brothers and sisters, the good is here… it is available to us… it is there just for the taking… and it is available not just now but for the rest of our lives.

VI. Activity: Reflection

A. Allow the participants to reflect on their lives. Ask them their purpose in life, and to ask God to put purpose and meaning in their life. While the group is in reflection, background music may be played.

B. Distribute the session handouts. Give 10-15 minutes for everyone to finish drafting their personal mission statements.

C. Close with a prayer for VISION.

TALK 2: DISCOVER YOUR PASSION

Expanded Outline

I. Introduction A. When we talk of passion it immediately brings to mind sensual or sexual images. But, of course,

passion is bigger than this. B. How do we define passion in the broader sense?

1. Strong and intense emotions and feelings 2. Deep and undying love for a person or cause 3. Total, unconditional, and enduring commitment

II. Discover Your Passion

A. We need to live a passionate life. A life without passion is not worth living for. B. What are the more important areas of passion that we need to discover for our lives to be meaningful

and colorful?

1. Discover Your Passion for God. Realizing that He is the source of life and the source of love, you need to cultivate your passion for God. Your life is worthless without Him. “You have no purpose apart from God.” a. God is true to His promises. God is always here: in the most difficult moments, and in the

happiest. He provides all that we need. b. God is faithfulness. He promises a bright future: For I know well the plans I have for

you…plans for your welfare, not woe…plans to give you a future full of hope…” Every day is full of hope and expectation.

c. God is deeply in love with me. And He continues to pursue me. Beyond duty, God loves us wholly. Beyond emotions, we return his love. Passion is about a deep and intense commitment. It can be an endless love affair with Jesus.

2. Discover Your Passion for SFC and Service. This is the community where faith, hope and love can be found. This is the place where passion is cultivated. This is where we see a clear vision of the beautiful plan God has for each one of us.

a. SFC is Community. And community is a visible sign of God’s presence in the world. b. Service is the ultimate response to God’s undying Love for us. It is how we love Him back.

Love and passion together is compassion.

In community we develop more skills and more wisdom in becoming better people.

Page 10: 80999485 SFC Discovery Weekend Manual

10

3. Discover Your Passion for Life. Life is meant to be lived. And lived well. Or else we are mere organisms that live and die. We are much more than what we see. Strive for excellence in everything that you do. Anything that you cannot do well is not worth doing at all. It will be a waste of your time. If you lack enthusiasm… it is not fun having you around.

a. Be excellent in all your relationships.

(1) Honor your parents in any and every way. Show them you love them by saying it. (2) Find time to spend with family. Prioritize quality. (3) Be a good friend. Keep it real. Stay true to who you are. (4) In courtship, practice chastity in speech and in deeds. Be intimate without compromising

your purity. Ex. Do not arouse another to lead to sex. b. Be excellent in your service and leadership.

(1) Learn to listen. Sometimes advice is overrated; unless asked, just listen. Know how to read between the lines.

(2) Be prayerful. Ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Pray in the moment; be specific and be bold. Learn how to pray in silence. God has things to tell you.

(3) Educate yourself on your faith. Develop a love for Scriptures. (4) Inspire others with your thankful attitude, joyful demeanor and devotion to God.

c. Be excellent in your career. (1) Have a plan. Do not be stuck in a job where you are not happy or fulfilled. (2) Always give your best. Do not settle. Mediocrity is not a trait of a hard-worker. But our job

is not our whole life. Workaholics compromise their best. Create a well-balanced work calendar.

(3) Respect your employer and your co-workers. Be Christ-like in your actions. You can preach about God by simply being a good and honest worker.

(4) Understand success (only) from God’s point of view. Careers must allow us to do things for God and for others. If it holds you back from giving, it is not for you.

Excellence is not about perfection. It is about giving our all. In our relationships, let us be there –in body, mind and spirit. Let us leave distractions at the door. In life, we must always aim for what is best on a regular basis.

III. Mini-Activity: Distribute the session handouts. Give 10-15 minutes for participants to answer the questions. Then, briefly guide them in a short prayer to the Holy Spirit.

IV. Conclusion

A. Passion is a great gift from God. We need passion to move our love beyond our borders. The Passion of Jesus was Love …even unto death. People are naturally drawn to passionate and charismatic individuals. Passion is all about leadership, and leadership is all about (providing a good) example.

B. Whatever vocation we are called for (married, single blessedness, or religious), passion will be (and is) a defining factor. When we love who we are, we will love what we will do. And where we are headed will be a future full of promise and hope indeed.

C. Let us be bold, let us be excellent… LIVE and LOVE with PASSION. D. Close with Glory Be… (or be led by the Spirit.)

TALK 3: DISCOVER YOUR PAIN

Expanded Outline

I. Introduction A. Pain is real. To live is to be in pain. “When we are cut, we bleed.” B. Jesus Christ did not come in comfort and luxury. Instead, His glory is in living a life of pain and

overcoming it. “To experience joy is to acknowledge pain and to overcome it.”

II. We Are Called To Discover And Overcome Pain A. We are here to discover our pain. We will discover joy only when we acknowledge our pain, and learn

to deal with it. Our mission here is not just to be victorious over our personal pain, but to share our victory with others so that they may learn to deal with their pain victoriously.

B. What are common sources of pain? 1. Pain we are born with.

a. Being born poor, or less fortunate than most b. Being raised in a broken or troubled family c. Feeling ugly or feeling not good enough in anything

2. The things people do that cause us pain. 3. The things that we do – the consequences of the bad choices and decisions we make.

III. How To Deal With Pain A. Know that pain is real and that we need to deal with it. Denial is a dangerous place to be in. B. Decide to be victorious over the pain. Let go.

1. Decide to heal, to forgive, and to forget the pain inflicted on us by people. 2. Do not hold onto the guilt over the pain caused by our mistakes. 3. Release the fear over circumstances and situations over which we have no control. Trust God

instead. He is always in control. C. God allows us to go through the pain to help us learn and grow.

1. Realize that the pain we go through can be sweet for us if we trust in God, who is in control. Through all the pain we go through, He is shaping us to be a source of strength and joy for others.

2. By allowing yourself to hurt and to heal, you will be better equipped in dealing with others.

IV. Activity Instructions: 1. Write down the three (3) events or situations in your life that have been the source of your deepest

pain. Then, write down the three (3) persons who have caused you your deepest pain. 2. All that is written will not be shown to anyone: only you and God know. 3. Pain can only go away if you offer it up, and the experiences it has brought you to God; allow Him

to take the pain away. 4. Take 10 minutes to pray and to write down your experiences. [Background music may be played.] 5. Instruct them to hold what they have written and join everyone praying over the pain(s):

a. Pray for the release from pain. Offer the pain and to ask God to take it away. b. Minister to the pain of others. Find others around you and pray over their pain.

6. (Instruct them to burn their papers and dump into a trash bin. Close with a prayer.)

TALK 4: DISCOVER YOUR PLEASURE

Expanded Outline

I. Introduction

A. We live in a suffering world where many people are unhappy because they have chosen to live at the level of existence without God as a source of joy.

B. But for us in SFC, the love of God is very real, and it is our source of joy because we are loved by Him. We know that He has a beautiful plan for us to be happy and successful in life.

C. We have discovered the sources of our pain and unhappiness and have allowed God to deal with them victoriously, as we have just experienced this afternoon.

D. Now we want to learn how to live joyfully, which is the only way for us to live; by discovering out pleasures in life.

E. Insert personal sharing on source(s) of joy, and on the initial discovery of joy, and on staying joyful.

II. Discovering Our Pleasure: What Are Our Pleasures?

A. Our highest source of pleasure is God. He loves us. He wants to bless us. He wants us to be happy in everything that happens to us: in everything that we do, through the people that we meet, and in the places that we go to. 1. Everything is beautiful if we see through the eyes of God. Each person is worth loving if we relate

to them with a heart that wants to love; because we have God as our source of love. 2. Happiness is a state of the heart, and it is a decision.

a. Happiness is a state of the heart. (1) I am happy because I am loved by God. (2) I am at peace because my heart rests in God. (3) I love because I was made by God to love. (4) I love because no one is undeserving of my love.

b. Happiness is a decision. (1) I will not allow anyone to steal my joy away from me. (2) I will love even the most difficult and undeserving person. (3) I will be a source of joy to the people around me.

B. Achievement is a source of pleasure. 1. All our achievements are an offering of our talents and skills to God. 2. All our achievements are used to serve God, and to contribute and add to the value of life for other

people.

C. Our possessions, wealth, and all other resources are a source of pleasure. 1. If we have hearts that are grateful and content with what we have, then we are not envious of what

others have. 2. We should realize that we are only stewards of our possessions, and that they are to be shared

especially with those who are in need and/or have less in life.

Page 13: 80999485 SFC Discovery Weekend Manual

13

D. All our relationships are a source of joy. 1. Our family is a source of joy.

a. I can be happy as a son or daughter if I honor and respect my parents, and forgive them for their mistakes and shortcomings.

b. I can be happy, also, with my blood brothers, sisters, and other members of my family if I relate to them with love, honor, and respect; and I must offer them the best of myself, and bring out the best in them.

2. My brothers and sisters in SFC are a source of joy. 3. My significant other is a source of joy.

a. I see him/her as a special gift from God. b. I genuinely love him/her, and we bring each other closer to the Lord.

E. I am a model of peace and a source of joy.

a. We become a source of joy because we decide to be happy. Plans fall through but joy is constant. b. My joyful attitude to life allows others to see God in me. What we feed grows. Breed joy! c. Happy people are peaceful people because every single day is a gift from God.

F. True pleasure is experienced not just in receiving joy, but in sharing and giving joy to others. “I am

happy when I see other people happy…because of the way I love.”

III. Conclusion

A. Every moment of our life is a celebration because there are so many perfect moments, and so many genuine sources of pleasure.

B. We can convert our workplace into a place of joy by the spirit of joy and love we bring with us. Our homes will become an oasis, and a source of pleasure because of the joy that we generate in all our relationships. SFC will be a cause of excitement because we are happy with our brothers and sisters, with our service, and with our God – whose presence is very real in our community.

C. We celebrate because we are a community that knows how to enjoy life to the fullest.

IV. Activities

A. Reflection: 1. List down the three (3) events in your life that have been a major source of joy. 2. List down the three (3) persons in your life right now who are major sources of joy. 3. List down three (3) places that you associate with pleasure and joy. (i.e., my home, my workplace,

New York City, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, etc.) B. Open Sharing: Ask some brothers and sisters to share their experiences of joy. C. Honoring:

1. Tell the participants, “Right now your brothers and sisters around you are your immediate source of joy. Let’s go around the whole conference hall/area and say to as many brothers and sisters we meet, ‘You’re my source of joy. I really appreciate your friendship.’”

2. Tell them that as they greet one another with joy, they must hold hands, embrace, or hug each other.

3. While this is going on, an appropriate background song may be played.

TALK 5: DISCOVER YOUR POWER

Expanded Outline

I. Introduction

A. We are the most powerful creation of God, because we are created in His image and likeness. And because He gave us dominion and control over all creation.

B. It is when we know God that we discover the power that is in us. Our goal and mission in life is to discover this power and to use this power in us; and to bring this power out in others so we can serve God.

C. Our lives are directed by the choices that we make. God leads us in the choices that we make. We are co-creators of the lives that we live. God gives us the power to make the right choices.

II. Without God We Are Weak And Powerless

Here are common sources of weakness for those who have not found God:

A. Hurts and suffering B. Guilt and fear C. Anger and hatred D. Pride, selfishness and vanity E. Vices F. Laziness and apathy

III. The Sources Of Power And How To Cultivate Them

A. Prayer 1. Start your day with prayer. Begin the day with joyful expectation of God’s surprises. 2. Spend your day in prayer by being conscious of God’s presence in everything you do and

everyone you meet. Convert the boredom of daily routine (traffic) with a special time of joy by being in a prayerful stance and always asking yourself: “What is the loving thing to do?” or “What would make God happy with the choices I face?” Pray as you work or play.

3. At night, recollect and thank God for His goodness and the privilege of living a productive day.

B. Passion for Service 1. The more I serve, the more I learn and the more I grow. 2. The more I serve, the more I love and the more I am loved. 3. The more I serve, the more I heal and the more I am healed. 4. The more I serve, the more I bring joy and the more I find joy.

C. Zeal for Righteousness 1. Power is having the moral authority to lead, and the moral authority that comes from being right

with God. 2. Power doesn’t just come from what I say or do, but how I witness to God’s righteousness in my life.

Page 15: 80999485 SFC Discovery Weekend Manual

CFC SINGLES FOR CHRIST CANADA DISCOVERY WEEKEND MANUAL

15

D. The Decision to Be Happy 1. The decision to be happy is not dependent on what others do, or do not do, for me. It is not

dependent on what they give or withhold from me. But believing in my heart that it is what I deserve because God loves me.

2. It is not something that I can buy, even with all the money in world, nor is it something I am deprived of because I do not own anything. Therefore, I can be more powerful in my simple life as a farmer or as a driver, rather than a bank executive or a powerful businessman, because the Spirit of God is in me. I live a happy and contented life because that is enough for me.

3. Take stock (an inventory) of your life. Identify the wrong attitudes, decide to be better every day, and change your approach. God gave us the power to live happy lives. We are ultimately responsible for our own happiness.

IV. Conclusion

A. We live a life of power because it is our birthright as sons and daughters of God who is the source of all power.

B. Our purpose and our reason for being is to live a life of power, and to be a source of power. We have to have a passion for life, the passion to love and care for others.

C. Audience Participation/Open Sharing: Ask the participants to answer the question, “What have they discovered during the retreat?”

D. The talk will end with: 1. A song of God’s POWER… or a Praisefest themed on God’s POWER. 2. A prayer of EMPOWERMENT to be led by the speaker.
