Pete’s Perspective ...

NatMeet XIIIin the past month, natmeet Xiii has come and gone, with 140 participants in 76 cars taking part. Organised by the Mazda MX-5 Club of South Australia, it was held at the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort, a location that highlighted the beautiful rolling hills and acreages of grapevines in the Barossa Valley. Though picturesque, it was dry and unseasonably hot, with the temperature on the Wednesday reaching 38°C! Combined with a northerly wind, it was quite hot and dusty drive, with many cars keeping their rooves on to keep the heat and dust out.

The South Australian organisers had done a terrific amount of planning and it showed in the execution of the week’s activities. These comprised three great drives to three different locations, including the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills, and the customary Show ’n’ Shine. Well done to the contingent from our Club who attended the event and who participated so fervently. The combination of great people, great drives and fine food and wine made for a great week.

We can now look forward to NatMeet XIV, which will be held in 2020 at the Cypress Lakes resort in the Hunter Valley, organised by the Mazda MX-5 Club of NSW.

Privacy GuidelinesWith recent media reports of the misuse of personal data, it is prudent that the Club remains conscious of how it protects Members’ personal information and their right to privacy. As a result, the Club has released a set of Privacy Guidelines that follow four key principles:

1. To take reasonable steps to make Members aware that the Club is collecting ‘personal’ information about them.

2. To notify Members about the purpose/s

for which the Club is collecting the information and who it may share that information with (among other things).

3. To comply with restrictions on how personal information can be used and to whom it can be disclosed.

4. To give Members the right to access the information the Club holds about them and to have that information corrected or modified.

The full text is included on pages 29-30 of this magazine, and a copy can be downloaded from our Club website <mx5vic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Privacy-Guidelines-20180421.pdf>. I would encourage all Members to have a read. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let the Committee know.

Happy 11th Anniversaryit has been a period of celebration lately with two of our early Chapters celebrating (or about to) their 10-year anniversary. Now, congratulations go to the North-Eastern Victoria Chapter for recently celebrating their 11th anniversary. It was fitting that they celebrated with a run organised by the inaugural Chapter Captain, Ron Gillick, who was instrumental in persuading the then Committee to set up the Chapter in the north-east. It was also great to see some of the city folk, Life Members Will and Coral Campbell and Murray Finlay, attending the run. We look forward to continued success for the Chapter and can’t wait to celebrate their 22nd anniversary.

A Few More HorsesThe mX-5 rumour mill is abuzz with the suggestion that the 2019 MX-5 will get a 15% boost in horses from 118kw to 135 kw, giving it more Zoom-Zoom. This increase in power won’t be achieved with a new engine, but with some modification

to the current SkyActiv-G engine. The modified engine will spin faster than its current 6,800 rpm redline, feature lightweight pistons and connecting rods, a new crankshaft, larger intake and exhaust ports and a more aggressive camshaft.

In addition to the engine modifications, it is also suggested that the new 2019 MX-5 will get telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel, giving the car more adjustment for taller drivers who have found it a little hard to get comfortable in an MX-5.

Though we would all say we bought our cars for the great handling and the wind-in-your-hair driving experience, i am sure we would all agree that a few more horses wouldn’t go astray.

And remember ... leave sooner, drive slower, live longer.

Randy’s Rant ...

They say good things come in threes. All I have to say is 2016, 2017, 2018!

That’s a hat trick of wins in the interstate Challenge between us and the MX-5 Club of NSW. On a challenging day, due to the changing weather conditions, we managed to defend our trophy handsomely and take out the win 970 points to 740. We won four of the six classes that we were competing for. It’s the second time we’ve won three in a row and I believe I’m the first Captain to have been luckily enough to be in charge for a hat trick of wins.

None of this would have been possible without the great effort put in by everyone on the day. I could not be more proud of everyone involved. A big thank you to the spectators that braved the horrible weather to come and support us. Special mention must go to Rob Wilko from NSW. Rob attended NatMeet in South Australia just prior and on the way back home dropped in to take some photos of the event. Plus he has made all his photos readily available for all Club members. That’s great commitment shown by him. Thanks for your efforts, Rob.

Essendon Mazda MX-5 Sprint Champion-ship: Rd 4, Sandown – Saturday, 19 Mayour first melbourne round for the season. Entries are out already so ensure you get in. This is an AROCA event and as always it will fill up quickly. Hopefully we get some nice cool autumn weather to lay down fast lap times.

Essendon Mazda MX-5 Sprint Champion-ship: Rd 5, Winton – Saturday, 9 JuneWe head back up the hume for another go at what is the most MX-5 friendly track in Victoria. More information to follow closer to the event.

Essendon Mazda MX-5 Sprint Champion-ship: Rd 6, Phillip Island – Saturday, 30 JuneThis is our second event in June before having a breather for the month of July. Another AROCA event that will be very popular.

The Phillip Island 6 Hour is coming up on the weekend of the 28-29 of July. Once again we are hoping to field two teams. I already have had a good show of interest. These events can’t succeed without the help of volunteers. So, if anyone is happy to spend a weekend down at the Island helping the lads out, please let me know. Last year we finished 4th and 5th and it would be great to put on another good show.

Tour de Tassie - 3 November Baskerville, 5 November Symmons PlainsPretty much all set for this event. Entries will come out around the end of July. Due to number restrictions I am only sending out the entries to those who have already expressed interest for the event. I’m capping it to 40, possibly 45 entries. So far I have 37 interested. Once these slots are filled entries will only be available if someone withdraws. So if you are interested, please send me an email ([email protected]). The cost for both days will be $260.

stay safe, and i'll see you all at a track soon.

for those who aren’t sure, natmeet is a national gathering, held every two years, of all the australian mazda mX-5 Clubs.

natmeet brings together owners from all around australia (and somertimes from overseas) in the one place to talk, have fun and show off their pride-and-joy. The event program combines motor sport with other events like funkhanas, navigation rallies, treasure hunts, convoy driving, a concours d’elegance / show & shine and a good deal of social activity over the four or five days.

These gatherings were born at a meeting of all state mX-5 Club presidents at daylesford, Victoria, in July, 1993. They kicked off in adelaide in 1994; Victoria & Tasmania have hosted in 2000, 2008 and 2016. ■

BAROSSA VALLEY, SA: This was my first NatMeet so I have nothing to compare it with … but, as events go, I thought it was a raging success. The Mazda MX-5 Club of SA did a fantastic job in organising a memorable gathering of MX-5 enthusiasts, and there were very few hiccups. The 70-plus cars were divided into six groups for ease of handling on the three runs. These runs were done over three days with two of the groups doing a run separated by 20 minutes, and each of these pairs of groups did a different run on each of the run days. By the end of NatMeet everyone had completed the three runs. This system reduced congestion in the three areas the runs covered.

The weather on all but the last two days was very hot, peaking at 38°C on the Wednesday. This meant that having the top down was usually only bearable in the morning. Most lunches and all morning teas were included in the NatMeet fee and on the runs were of a very good standard. The run to the Adelaide Hills was a find-your-own-lunch affair but there were plenty of interesting eateries to choose from.

Tuesday was Concours day and happened to coincide with high winds, high temperatures and dust. The judges (of which I was one) had to disregard the gradually thickening layer of dust accumulating on the cars. Our own

lori and mary mercieca won the Best NC award, which was a surprise to no-one except Lori. Lunch was a basic BBQ provided by the local Lions Club. Other Victorian winners were lyall Tilson who received the Individual NatMeet Champion award and Kim Cole who won the Hill Climb. South Australia was awarded the National Trophy. Lyall is a WA Club member who acquired a Vic/Tas membership for NatMeet motor sport and has a car stored near Phillip Island for when he comes over to visit.

The evening meals were all very good and a lot of fun. Some effort was put into splitting people up each night so you got to sit with new people each time, a good idea.

Dinner at the Seppeltfield Winery was terrific and was also the venue for the charity silent auction, over $4,500 was raised which was split between the local CFS and the ONJ Cancer Research Institute (for brain cancer research).

it was a fantastic six days spent in terrific company; even getting lost didn’t dampen the enthusiasm as we got to see areas in the barossa that no-one else did. most of the runs were somewhat straight

but that’s the nature of the barossa roads. our group lucked it for the most interesting run into the adelaide hills on the day that temperatures dropped to 22°, so it was tops down all the way.

Accommodation at the Novotel was top class and the meals we had there were of the highest standard. NatMeet chairman Hans Oldenhove and his committee did an outstanding job, especially Poppy Hawkins who was in charge of hospitality and therefore responsible for the high standard of our food and drink. ●

Thinking we would be first to arrive, we were surprised that Chapter Captains John and Katrina had beaten us again. It was only 8.10am (for a 9.30 start!)There were 16 MX-5s and 30 people who braved Melbourne’s fickle weather, including Western Victoria Chapter Captains Ian and Karen from Wallinduc.

After gathering inside to shelter from the weather, we eventually braved the cold wind outside, renewing acquaintances and discussing all things MX-5. With Bronwyn distributing run notes and ensuring everyone signed in, Geoff then presented the run brief including a mention of a possible cycling group in the area.

With Geoff and Bronwyn in the lead and Margie and Bob as tail end we headed out. The first part of the run was fairly easy and a number of members had taken the opportunity to wrestle the keys from their partners. This part was highlighted by visiting such places as Bayles, Modella, Drouin South before arriving in Poowong. The drive was made more interesting by a cattle truck, horse float and the ever-increasing northerly wind and associated leaf (and small branch) litter.

At Poowong we collected another adventurer whilst Katrina provided some much-needed sustenance in the form of homemade chocolate-chip cookies. The stop was shortened as the wind increased and the weather deteriorated.

We changed trip leader with Bob taking over, after wrestling the keys from Margie, and John and Katrina as tail-end. We headed off with many still braving the weather with rooves down.

A quick blast along the Bass Valley Road was made interesting by dodging the numerous branches on the road before a forced stop in Loch to raise our rooves as the rain arrived. Heading out along the Loch-Wonthaggi Road, we then followed a loop through Kernot where we found our cycling group sheltering at the local hall. As we commenced the infamous Kernot-Krowera Road we were presented with a tree across the road; fortunately we were able to bypass it, along with another further up the road. Rejoining the Loch-Wonthaggi Road we continued through Archies Creek with a final fling along Mill Road, including a minor detour for one car, before joining the Bass Highway and an easy run into San Remo.

As we arrived in San Remo the rain really set in; surprisingly there was plenty of parking outside the Fishermen’s Co-Op (wonder why). Greeted with reserved tables and our own ordering point, we were quickly sitting down to some great fish and chips as we watched the tempest outside along with the water being driven under the doors. With lunch finished we said our goodbyes and, with the weather obliging, we headed for our cars and began the trek home.

Thanks to geoff, bronwyn and the Central team for another great run. We live in hope that one of their fish and Chip runs will have the sun shine on it. ●

We’re NOT cold!›

Duncan had planned an ambitious run to Great Lake, relying on the notorious calm weather that we enjoy in Southern Tasmania at this time of the year. The weather gods managed to get involved and covered the destination in 100mm of snow the day before. A call to the pub confirmed the depth of the snow and the fact that it was still snowing. A quick look at the snowline on Mount Wellington suggested that snow had fallen well below our proposed destination.

Bang on time (it was pretty cold where we huddled at Kangaroo Bay) we left after deciding that we would review the Route en route.

We undertook the first part of the original run to Salmon Ponds, where coffee and a few breakfasts were consumed by those who had forgotten or hadn’t bothered, given the earlier start time. A call to the pub at Bothwell confirmed that, while blustery, the weather was fit for an MX-5. This was good news as the route to Bothwell via Hamilton and the Hollow Tree road involved some brilliant MX-5 tarmac.

A quick check of the speedo on a couple of occasions confirmed that the speed advisory signs for some of the corners were underestimating the capability of the MX-5 by a factor of at least two. An empty road and a dying wind meant that complying with the speed limit was challenging but possible, if you really had to comply. Duncan set an appropriately challenging pace which kept us all on our toes.

At one stage the Chapter Captain in his sleek ND was observed to overtake one of his assistants in his enthusiasm to keep up with two NCs. However it should be recorded that no-one was left behind and no animals were hurt during the convoy’s progression to Bothwell.

Arriving at Bothwell confirmed the oft-spoken line: if you are not happy with the weather down here, wait a few minutes and it will change. Change it did, and for the better.

The pub turned on some great food which killed the conversation for a while. Quite an achievement – feeding us all that is – given the pub had short notice of our change of plans. It probably helped having a local in the group; Isabel comes from these parts.

Lunch done, conversations continued as we headed back to the cars. The run down to the main north/south highway provided some more twists and turns, just in case we hadn’t had enough. From there we headed homewards before splitting up closer to town.

a big thanks to duncan for organising the day and for finding an alternative to fitting snow chains. it should also be recorded that every car on this run was carrying a radio, which provided some great conversations on the way and some excellent warnings on road conditions ahead. ●

Threatening skies at the stasrt, but a hearty lunch at Bothwell more than made up for it

Chapter chatter ...

There was an element of surprise for this Sunday run ...After a week up north of what was most likely the warmest April to date, 10am on Sunday – overcast and forecast between 12 and 21 degrees – had all 10 vehicles and their members wondering what Mother Nature would provide for the day.

The heat had gone and coats, warm coffees and hot chocolates replaced the shorts and sunscreen.

Today was the 11th Anniversary to the day that the Chapter had its very first run. We had 10 vehicles and a surprise visit from Will and Coral Campbell and Murray Finlay (pictured, far right) who, along with Ron Gillick, our trip leader for the day, discussed the history of our Chapter and made some special presentations to all that attended.

Tops down, coffees and hot chocolates done, we left Milan’s Bakery in Milawa heading to Whitfield via Moyhu. It was 16 degrees, and overcast … will the weather hold out for us?

You all know the feeling: 15 minutes into the drive, the cars run like silk and, as we settle into the drive, that overwhelming feeling that there’s nothing like driving these little machines! We wound our way up the Whitfield-Mansfield road to the top, ready for our descent, which was dirt. Yes, you heard correctly – dirt. We had been warned, but there’s always that feeling of hesitation when you get to dirt. Clean car, I’ll have to wash it, what about stone chips … but down we went into the Whitfield -Benalla road, almost black unsealed road which was rather wet.

Wet, black, muddy, and a cow … yes, a cow … right in the middle of the road, standing fast against MX-5 number one. Cows do have a dominating presence when they are bigger than you and look over the windscreen of your car, but we pressed on. The cow gave up holding the road and high-tailed it over the road bank and hid behind a tree before most of us could get a photo. Now we had rain as well; rooves up, we kept pushing forward for Glenrowan for lunch.

Lunch is always good, but the wind and hints of rain made it a little cold, and it was fun watching Roger’s demonstration of the Helinox brand of folding chair, which fits into the boot of the MX-5. Look them up on the web; any way of getting a chair in the MX-5 boot is always impressive! Group photo time, and Murray said his goodbyes and headed back to the Big Smoke.

From Glenrowan, we were back on the blacktop, and after admiring the mud on our cars and discussing the extra weight it would create, we headed to Wangaratta via the Warburton ranges. A nice little run, often overlooked. From here, we experienced the straight line driving our Shepparton and Echuca-Moama members go through with a cruise control run all the way to Yarrawonga. It’s pretty dry in these parts and very different views from where we started.

Afternoon tea was looming and we stopped at a little bakery in Yarrawonga with cakes and coffees to finish off the afternoon.

and that was the 11th year anniversary to the day. rain, sun, mud, blacktop, tight corners, hills, coffee, a heap of great company … and a cow. ●

April brings to Tasmania an abundance of high-performance cars including Lamborghini, McLaren, Dodge Viper, Aston Martin and a few very fast MX-5s to participate in Targa Tasmania, which has been run for 27 years on the state’s highways.

Targa Tasmania is often quoted as the Ultimate Tarmac Rally and we are so lucky to be able to drive these roads regularly on Club runs.

Twenty-two cars, along with drivers and navigators including visitors Steve and Susan Murphy from the Central Chapter, assembled awaiting a fantastic day … although cool with the hint of snow in the air. We travelled along the exact route that competitors take on Day 2 of the Targa.

Split into two groups because of the large numbers, a highlight of the highway stage was meeting a very large contingent of Porsches heading towards Launceston. Group Two seemed to have lost their way and headed for Mole Creek to await the first group’s arrival for our scheduled pit stop.

With snow visible on the Western Tiers, we headed off again to run the Sheffield stage, where we caught up with five tractors driving their own version of Targa. In the Nook and Paloona stages, Group Two again did their own thing and met Group One going the opposite way, so it was a quick turn around for them to get back on to the right track ...

Eventually everyone arrived safely at Sheffield RSL for a great roast lunch.

Mt Roland, which never fails to please, beckoned after lunch, and we finished the day with a milkshake and coffee at the ‘50s Diner at Deloraine. It was decided that we are not quite ready to become Targa navigators, but we can still dream that we are comparable to the Targa drivers.

Thank you to lawrie Pitt for organising a fantastic day. ●

A glorious sunset at Marlo›

On Tuesday morning – following several folk staying the night in Traralgon, some having come from Ballarat and Bendigo (commitment!), we all met up at McDonalds, Traralgon East. There were 10 MX-5s: Peter Ferguson, Peter Gillies, Alan and Ed Laine, Jeff and Judy Searle, John and Cheryl Paul, Ian and Karen Bradshaw, Garry and Sue Fincher, David Crouch, Tail-End Trish and Peter … and me.

Following many days of wind and rain, the weather was glorious … as has come to be expected on Eastern Chapter runs!

Over our coffees we decided to go the back way to Stratford though Heyfield and Maffra so as to avoid the road works on Princes Freeway (and police everywhere along there too).

David Crouch was our leader for the first leg and Tail-End Trish and Peter had our backs. It was not long before we encounted the boys in blue, just past Heyfield, and had breath testing done on all drivers. We all passed with flying colours.

At Stratford we had a break and prostate stop and then headed off to Bairnsdale to meet up with the “Far East Folks” and lunch at the Italian Club on the Great Alpine Road.

When we took off for Bruthen we had five extra MX-5 from the Far East Folks: Judith and Barry White, Mike and Maryanne Harris, John Miller, David Morrison and John and Lynn Waterhouse.

Before we left I had to check the tyre pressures on my ND as the warning light

came on telling me one tyre was down in pressure. When I checked it at a servo, one tyre was only slightly down on pressure. This is the fourth time it’s done this; it’s an annoying feature of the ND that seems not uncommon.

Our next stop was the Buchan Pub for coffee again. The pub was completely rebuilt after a fire burnt down the old one, and the Buchan community has done a fantastic job on the replacement, including a coffee bar and a giant picture of the old pub at the back of the main lounge.

When we left Buchan we followed the best road of the entire run to Orbost and then Marlo. The Far East Folk left us at this point to return to Bairnsdale.

Driving through the hills after Buchan we noticed what a huge drought the farmers are experiencing at the moment; there is hardly any livestock to be seen and you could flog a flea across the paddocks, they are so bare; being a retired farmer it’s a tough sight to look at.

Going through the magnificent bush section after Buchan our run leader, Peter Ferguson, came across two lyrebirds, two wallabies, three sheep and one school bus! We missed them all and continued on to Orbost and the Marlo caravan park and motel – a nice spot!

We had dinner at the Marlo Pub, which was very busy that night; I think it’s the

only place to eat out in the evening.

The tucker was good and even after most left, the remaining four – Ian Bradshaw, Peter Ilijash, John Paul and Peter Ferguson – apparently created a lot of noise and were the last to leave the place. (I’m told that, late in the evening, John regaled with a lengthy story of how he daily carries the remains of Bendigo’s … er, excrement (after treatment) for spreading on farm paddocks.

The story of his sh*t truck, towing his sh*t trailer containing 26 tonnes of Bendigo sh*t, AND getting paid sh*t wages was hilarious!

Next morning it was off to breakfast at the coffee and fish tackle place (sounds delicious ~ Ed) in Marlo and then to off to Cape Conran and Cabbage Tree Creek, Nowa Nowa and Lakes Entrance for lunch, but not before Fergy took us down a dead-end road at Marlo.

Cape Conran was good when we stopped there, as there were dolphins feeding off the nearby rocks. As we left there was another Fergy U-turn as he got lost yet again! After a nice lunch in Lakes Entrance several people headed off on our own separate ways.

a great trip, made better by the fact that being (a) mid-week and (b) well away from melbourne, we had hardly any traffic to contend with. Brilliant! ●

Jenny and I arrived just as those that had breakfasted at the Warren Glen Nursery Café started to emerge into the car park, ready for Bruce’s briefing. The optional brunch was well attended with a just few of us just out for the run and the picnic at Yan Yean Reservoir Park.

The initial topic of the day was generated by several firm statements that red cars go faster – this was precipitated by eight of the 11 waiting MX-5s being red. Of course there is more than one red (15 difference factory reds in fact) and my first MX-5 was a Velocity Red which assists the assertion (note: according to slapthepenguin.com, it’s scientifically proven the red cars go faster). Taking this down a notch, Bruce reminded us that today’s drive was not a race ... which he mentioned just before setting off in his red car.

The drive was equally split in distance by a photo opportunity at Sugarloaf Reservoir, nestled in the Christmas Hills (no sign of Santa). We passed on the 15km walk around the reservoir to get back on the road and to enjoy narrower tarmac with tighter and twistier turns – all at modest speed, of course.

And at arrival, our odo reading of 71.1km actually matched the run notes exactly – for the first time ever.

Then it was time to find a picnic table and enjoy the view of all the water in Yan Yean Reservoir (82% full – nearly 25 million litres) and the surrounds. Whilst we managed to solve a number of the

world’s problems over a bite to eat, we left a few for next time.

Question of the day: “Does the enjoyment of driving an MX-5 ever wear off?”

a: No. Never. Ever.

red cars may well be faster, but they don’t know how to park. ●

Winter is coming ...

For all you owners of soft tops, here’s a timely reminder to check and clean your water drains before the wet season starts. There are various guides on what to do and how best to do it on our mx5vic web site and the wider web.but what has this to do with the PrhT (power retractable hard top) on the nC?

The NC PRHT also has water drains, the same as the soft top and, like the soft top, they require checking and cleaning ... or you may also experience the dreaded “wet floor” syndrome.

Many point out that the roof seals so well and that no water should require draining on a PRHT. Further claims state they have never seen water in the

drain pans after washing their car – and neither should they. That said, let’s take the stationary car away from the flat driveway and take it over some harsh undulations at speed or over driveway crossovers whilst it’s raining and now a small amount of water could breach the PRHT’s roof seals.

Other scenarios where water may reach the drain pans are when folding a wet roof or getting caught with the roof down in the rain. Mazda engineers envisaged

this and developed a complex drainage system which eventually channels the water to the drain pans and out under the car.

The problem is that so very little water ever flows down the drains, and what does will collect the ever-present dust, turning it into muddy water. There is rarely enough water to flush the muddy water from the drains, resulting in a build-up of mud and eventually the dreaded blocked drain.

so how and where do we check the rain drains in a nC PrhT?

Start the roof open cycle until the rear cover opens fully, stopping the cycle before the roof itself begins to open.

From the rear, check that both drain tubes are connected to the bottom of the rear window as per the following photo.

Rear window drains

Left and right rear window drains

The rear window drains are connected to a spigot under the window and retained with a wire clip.

Rear window drain and wire clipThe drain pans are located directly behind and below the roll hoops and can be checked by pouring water on to them. The water should drain away quickly and flow out from under the car in a steady stream. If it doesn’t drain or drains out slowly, your drains will require cleaning.

Cleaning the drain is much harder than it should be as unfortunately the Mazda engineers welded the debris grate to the top of the drain tube making it impossible to feed anything through the grate to unblock the drain. Some people have cut the grate to allow access and then clipped it back into place with various degrees of success. My method is to use a compressed air nozzle wrapped with a rag, forcing the air through the grate and down the tube. Follow this up with water and repeat until the water flows freely.

Rear window seal

As part of my cleaning regime, I also wipe all the seals with a wet cloth to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated in the grooves, channels and tubes. I also use a spray bottle of water and a small, soft paint brush to get into the various crevices.

While we are cleaning the rear water drains ...

... the PRHT and the soft top share the same water drains around the windscreen header (where the roof meets

the windscreen) and at the rear of the door, so it’s worth checking and cleaning those as well.

Happy cleaning! ■

The Interstate Challenge ...

One of the most eagerly-anticipated events on the calendar is the annual MX-5 Interstate Challenge between Victoria-Tasmania and New South Wales. This year’s event on 14 April was played in challenging conditions at Winton Motor Raceway on an AROCA-organised Sprints and Racing day.

for the third year in succession, the trophy has been retained by the Victoria-Tasmania team.

The challenge has always been taken seriously but competed for in a spirit of friendliness. With 28 entrants from NSW and 33 from Victoria the competition was on. It was soon obvious the Northerners were determined to get their hands on the trophy. In the end, after some complicated mathematical calculations, they missed out by the narrowest of margins. The trophy is ours for another 12 months.

The weather at Winton presented 146 drivers and AROCA with the most extreme conditions they have had for a long time.

The day started on the long track, and the conditions were excellent – dry, cool and only a little windy. Dust on the track was soon blown away and good times were recorded by most.

Two worthy of mention were the track records set by Russell Garner for Super Modified and Randy Stango Navarra in NC/ND Modified.

By midday the temperature was dropping, the sky was darkening and serious rain arrived. The Alfa and MG racers provided plenty of excitement and I’m sure the

The teams ... a very friendly rivalry›

MG people were wondering if leaving their hoods at home was such a good idea …

After the lunch break the short track was opened but only one run was achieved due to the river of water across the track.

Doing it smoothly takes on a whole new meaning when it’s that wet. It is essential to keep all of the accelerating and braking in a straight line and to steer very gently into the bends. The main straight was particularly treacherous and required a lot of respect.

These conditions caught some drivers unaware with some executing the most graceful pirouettes I have seen for a long time. I must say, a few did come to an unexpected halt half way through the manoeuvre. Hats off to the organisers who were on the job promptly and had the track cleared and open after each incident.

The Vic-Tas team is to be congratulated for handling the changing conditions appropriately, managing to bring all of their cars home unscathed. Well done!

The driver of the day award must go to Brock Watchorn. Considering this was his first track day and bearing in

mind the conditions, his performance was exceptional.

The Concours d’Elegance award goes to car #62, the BRG NB which looks brand new. We all sincerely hope the owner understands how good his car is and is now able to maintain it accordingly.

Kim Cole deserves an award; having taken part at the NatMeet in Adelaide, which finished just the day before, he dropped in at Winton “on his way home” to compete.

Once again another great weekend organised by AROCA and very well supported by the Mazda MX-5 Clubs from NSW and Victoria & Tasmania.

We are now looking forward to the next meeting at sandown on saturday, 19 may.

see you there! ●
