The World is divided in two groups
• Those who write and read on paper • Those who type and read on screen
![Page 3: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
• Some editors are still marking changes on paper, with someone else typing the editor’s markup into the file.
• Electronic editing is efficient—particularly when the writer and editor don’t work in
the same office.

Electronic editing -Benefits
1. Saves time – NO need to spend time deciphering
handwriting and typing minor copy-editing corrections;
– Direct corrections. – The time the writer spends on a
document is reduced.
2. Saves storage space while maintaining archives of changes.
![Page 9: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

• The editor types in changes and questions and discusses the markup with the writer.
• The editor provides comments in a separate file
![Page 32: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
• Author inserts them into the document.
• This method is best when the editor doesn’t have the appropriate software to edit the file directly and/or layout is most important (for example, in brochures).
![Page 33: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
• Technical reviews are conducted before editing.
• This method is best when a complex document is likely to be changed substantially by subject-matter experts during their review, so that the copy is reasonably stable and accurate before it reaches the editor.

Problems and Limitations
![Page 38: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Problems Difficulty getting used to a new
way of working.

Problems Difficulty seeing things on
screen. • Some punctuation marks are
difficult to see• Most editors find consistency
comparisons more difficult when they can’t simply flip pages.
![Page 40: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Problems
Difficulty comparing multiple reviews.
Writer may have difficulty comparing all
the comments on screen; this job is
usually done more easily by spreading out
a collection of papers on a desk.
Lack of easy change-tracking features
in some programs.
![Page 41: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Problems Ergonomic considerations.
Associated risks of back, eye, arm and wrist
problems.
They need to ensure that desks, chairs,
lighting, and other workplace features are
appropriate;
Take frequent breaks and exercise;
![Page 42: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)

Backing up your data• If you lose an hour’s work because you
forgot to save, that may be a nuisance; • if you lose a day’s work, you may be in
serious trouble; • if you lose a whole project, you could be
out of business. • And remember to keep a copy of your
backups at some other location: what happens if your office is destroyed by fire, flood or earthquake?
![Page 45: 8 Supe 12 - Journal of Postgraduate Medicine](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012011/613d31bb736caf36b75a6ee1/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Please keep a copy of the final text files and
style sheet on your hard drive or backed
up on a floppy for a few weeks after
you’ve turned the project in.
