Mary Johnson-Roy and Oshea Israel
Mary Johnson-Roy is the mother of a
murdered child, and the founder of “From
Death to Life”, an organization dedicated to
ending violence through facilitating healing
and reconciliation between families on both
sides of the tragedy of homicide. Through
participation in the restorative justice process, Mary transformed
the anger and hatred she had for Oshea Israel, the 16-year-old
boy who took her only son’s life, into forgiveness and love.
When Oshea was released from prison in 2010, after having
served 17 years, Mary welcomed him home with open arms. She
now considers him her “spiritual son” and together they share
their powerful story of healing and reconciliation in forums
around the country.

Phone it in. Rinse and repeat. Go through the motions.
These are not phrases we wish to associate with spiritual life! But inevita-
bly and without attention, the spirit can become stale and stagnant. The
High Holy Days are an invitation, each one with its own feel, to make
sure our spiritual lives are not inevitable. That we pay attention. To not
phone it in. To not rinse and repeat. To not go through the motions.
Katharine Rhodes Henderson, in God’s Troublemakers: How Women of
Faith Are Changing the World writes,
Rituals become rituals because they are capable of carrying the numinous; as
symbols of a host of meanings and associations, some of which we may only
partially grasp, they have the power to reconnect us with what we hold sacred.
But without regular practice, meditation upon their mysteries and nurture in a
community of faith, all rituals—including hymns, images and sacred stories—lose
their numinous charge and become merely hollow forms…[Rituals are] the root
system of spiritual food for a lifetime.
The rituals of the High Holy Days allow us to create the root system that will feed us
beyond the sounds of the shofar, the bread we throw at tashlikh and the bagels we eat at
break fast. These are rituals that return year after year and require us to explore new
meanings and associations. They ask us to reconnect with what we hold sacred. But in order
to not become hollow forms, the rituals need our full participation. As we prepare for the
High Holy Days, I invite you to take one ritual (a prayer, a practice or perhaps a family tradi-
tion) to become more curious about. Where in its recitation or its doing are you becoming aware
of yourself, those around you and God? What might you do the same or differently with it this year?
How might its recitation or its doing help you become the truest and kindest version of yourself?
As we turn to the formal liturgy of the Mahzor and the informal liturgy of these questions, I
hope we enter 5780 with deeper intention. That we not phone it in, rinse and repeat or go
through the motions. But truly arrive. May 5780 find you, as you seek it, with an ever-
growing spiritual life and the blessings of health and peace.
L’Shana Tova,
Rabbi Aaron S. Weininger

Drivers Needed
Adath’s Outreach Caring Community:
Yad Sima Tova has a need to have more
drivers help provide rides for transporta-
tion of Adath members to services,
minyan, or Adath functions. Call the
Transportation Hotline with a message
offering your help at 952.215.3937.
Congregants and community members participated in a unique service
to dedicate a new area at the Adath Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery. This
area of our cemetery is the first Jewish green burial option in the Twin
Cities and eighth in the US, providing Adath Jeshurun members and all
that are associated with the Jewish community an option for minimal
environmental impact while respecting the traditions of Jewish burial.
The dedication ceremony on June 23 was led by Rabbi Kravitz and
Hazzan Dulkin with assistance from Rabbi Stewart Kelman, Emeritus Rabbi of Netivot
Shalom in Berkley, California and Dean of the Gamliel Institute*. Rabbi Kelman was our
scholar-in-residence for the weekend, and also met with the Chevra Kavod Hamet and
the Cemetery Committee for discussions and learning on the spiritual and practical
aspects of Jewish end of life practices.
The dedication ceremony included the singing of Psalms (Ketuvim) 104 as the procession
walked the perimeter of the new burial section to recognize the sacredness of this land.
To reduce the long-term maintenance, a short-grass prairie and native wild flowers now
cover this area. Replacing the use of individual monuments, a shared monument has
been installed at the entrance to list the names of loved ones. Concrete grave liners will
not be used, and the choice of caskets is limited to biodegradable materials. The new
area is located in the southeast corner of the cemetery.
For answers to your questions about green
burial section or other options of the Adath
Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery, please contact
the Adath Jeshurun office to be referred to a
member of the Cemetery Committee.
*The Gamliel Institute educates, guides and
trains community leaders on Chevrah
Kadisha and related funeral, burial and
mourning traditions.

HEALTH NEWS
It Takes a Village to Teach Community
Over the course of the school year, I often hear parents express
a variety of reasons why they send their children to Talmud
Torah. Many focus on the specific areas of study in which we
immerse our students—Hebrew, Israel, Jewish Living, Holidays,
History, Tanach, and Music—all of the tools for potentially living
an intentional Jewish life. But at the core of each of these
conversations is that parents want to create a sense of
COMMUNITY for their children and for their extended families.
They want the shared knowledge, skills, and experiences that
come with the supplemental Jewish education that we provide to
be the primary catalyst for their children to connect with EACH
OTHER in addition to learning and living their traditions.
From our earliest biblical and rabbinic teachings, the education of
our children has been an integral part of the fabric that builds
and sustains Jewish communities. “And these words, which I
command you this day, shall be upon your heart; and you shall
teach them diligently to your children…” [Deut. 6:6-7]. Here,
the Torah challenges us to not only receive God’s mandates, but
to make sure they are passed along to our children as a
communal legacy. Our responsibilities are expanded through the
rabbinic tradition, as noted in Maimonides’ 12
th
-century law
code, the Mishneh Torah: “Just as a person is obligated to teach
one’s child, so too they are obligated to teach their grandchild,
as it says, ‘…and make them known to your children, and to
your children's children…’ [Deut 4:9]. And not just their child
and their grandchild: rather, there is a command upon each and
every wise person in Israel to teach all students, even though
they are not their children [MT, Talmud Torah, 1:2].” The
mandate to build community through education expands as we
assume the responsibility to educate each and every child.
In The Observant Life: The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism for
Contemporary Jews, Rabbi Eliezer Diamond reminds us that “the
obligation to provide a Jewish education is COMMUNAL as well
as parental. The Talmud [BT, Bava Batra, 21a] attributes an
ordinance to Joshua ben Gamla, one of the last High Priests of
the Second Temple period, requiring each community to provide
for the religious education of all its children from the age of six
or seven. Jewish communities throughout the ages have taken on
the responsibility, providing Jewish education to their youth.
Consequently, federations and other communal institutions
should make it their top priority is to increase the availability and
affordability of Jewish education for all Jewish children. After all,
it is Jewish education that is the most important guarantor of
Jewish continuity; more crucially, it is only through education
that we can create a Jewish COMMUNITY worth perpetuating.”
Registration for the 2019-2020 academic year for new and
continuing students is open and will continue through September
8 at www.talmudtorahmpls.org/registration.Together, let’s build
and nurture our COMMUNITY!!

YOUTH: GRADES 4-12
OMEN OF ADATH
Notes from the Presidents
Yesterday is history; Tomorrow is a mystery; Today is a gift.
Anonymous
The Women of Adath have had 100 years of yesterdays, so one
might say our history is well written.
Will we have another 100 years of tomorrows? We certainly
hope so, but that truly is a mystery!
But, we do have the gift of Today!
We start to open our gift by untying the ribbon—symbolic—we
untie ourselves from the ordinary way of thinking and move our
minds “outside the box”.
The next step involves the removal of the tissue paper—
symbolic—each piece of tissue paper reminds us that as Women
of Adath we are here to connect with women of all generations,
commit to support the synagogue, contribute to the greater
Jewish community, and strengthen our ties to Israel.
Finally, here is our gift of Today! It tells us that, as Women of
Adath, we have committed ourselves to maintaining the changes
and growth we have seen over the years. It reminds us to be
thankful for each woman who takes the time to volunteer at a
community outreach project. We use this “gift” to come
together, knowing all that we can accomplish together.
It’s a new day, one where we can come together, regardless of
our interests and skills, to form a network of committed Jewish
women. Let’s use our gift to put our hearts and souls into
making this a kinder, gentler and more inclusive world.
L’Shana Tova—may the coming year bring love and kindness to
your lives.

FOUNDATION
Adath Jeshurun
Foundation proudly
announces the
newly established
Jeannie and
Steve Gilfix
Family Fund for
Teen
Engagement,
honoring
Jeannie’s mother
Chernie Levinson,
of blessed memory. This new permanent fund supports post
B'nai Mitzvah teen engagement and education at Adath, to
deepen the quality and diversity of those experiences and attract
more teens to rich Jewish experiences.
When Chernie died earlier this year, Jeannie and Steve knew
they wanted to do something to honor her memory. “We want-
ed to strengthen the roots that have been planted,” said Jeannie.
“Being Jewish was really important to my mom. She grew up in a
small town as one of the only Jewish families.” Growing up in
Perham, Minnesota, Chernie’s family always observed Shabbat
and made every effort to provide her with a Jewish education.
The family received lessons from Temple of Aaron’s clergy, so
Chernie could study from afar, while her father taught her the
aleph-bet. When she turned 16, her mother Pauline moved the
kids to the Twin Cities to get a Jewish education while her father
Philip remained in Perham running the family business—the
Braufman General Store.
“Our parents really sacrificed so we could get a Jewish
education,” said Chernie’s sister Betty Greenstein (z’l) in a 2013
feature in Perham Focus magazine. Years later, Philip sold the
store and joined the rest of the family in South Minneapolis,
near the old Adath building on 34
th
and Dupont.
“My mom was active at
Adath throughout her
adult life—in Women’s
League, attending
services, and was sure to
be there every time her
grandchildren, Zachary
and Hannah, or I lead
services or read from the
Torah. She loved to
observe the holidays and
often hosted Shabbat dinners and held amazing Passover Seders,”
said Jeannie.
Over the years Jeannie and Steve have given their time and com-
mitment to Adath and the broader Jewish community. Jeannie
has taught at Adath’s Shabbat Morning Program since her college
years, and served on the Board of Trustees in several educational
vice-presidential roles. Steve has served on various committees
at Adath and more recently has led Talmud Torah of Minneapolis
in several positions, including his current role as co-president.
With the creation of a new permanent fund of Adath Jeshurun
Foundation, Jeannie and Steve have done their part to ensure
future generations continue to be engaged and educated by our
Adath community in their formative years.
“We know that our
future relies on educating
the next generation,'' said
Steve. “Zachary and
Hannah are fourth-
generation Adath
members. As students,
they benefited from the
Jewish educational and
social opportunities in the
community. During their
teen years, they both developed leadership skills while
experiencing the gift of giving back by tutoring their younger
peers, and Hannah leading the Adath USY board”.
“We realize that education is such a central part of Judaism and
know that the opportunities for teens look different today. We
want to make sure teens continue to have the opportunity to
engage and learn beyond their B’nai Mitzvot. During adolescence,
teens define their values and identity, and have an increasing
capacity for deeper learning and critical thinking. Thus, the
importance of ensuring our teens are engaged and learning in
meaningful and innovative ways,” said Jeannie.
This year the Gilfix fund will help launch the TEN@Adath
program—our branch of the new community-wide Teen
Education Network. A replacement for its predecessor program
“Yachad,” TEN@Adath will allow Adath’s teens to continue
accessing opportunities for meaningful, age-appropriate Jewish
learning that inspires them to stay connected.
Jeannie and Steve encourage others to join them in making
permanent gifts to the Adath community. “Find what’s important
and meaningful for you and see how you can support and expand
upon that,” said Steve. Jeannie added, “It’s a blessing to feel
passionate about something and to be able to share that
excitement with others.”
To explore your own Jewish legacy and other ways to grow the
Foundation’s endowment, contact Development Director Evan
Stern at 952.215.3916, [email protected], or Foundation
President Joe Rubenstein at [email protected].
