Brief recap• Drawing the main lines for future research

in the domain of FInES: Future Internet Enterprise Systems

• Such research lines are positioned in a long-term, highly innovative vision, with 2025 as time horizon.

• We assume a socio-economic marked discontinuity in the next decade (… forget ‘business as usual’!)

• Contribute to Horizon 2020 Work Programme

Page 3: 8 rr2025-missikoff

The 4 FInES Knowledge Spaces

1. Socio-economic Space (SOCE)The larger context in which we operate that includes the model of development, the system of values, ...

2. Enterprise Space (ENTP)the (desired) key traits of future enterprises:

••• 3

1. Humanistic Enterprise

2. Inventive Enterprise

3. Agile Enterprise

4. Cognisant Enterprise

5. Sensing Enterprise

6. Community-oriented Enterprise

7. Liquid Enterprise

8. Glocal Enterprise

9. Sustainable Enterprise

And the behavioural paradigm: Invent – Plan – Build – Operate – Manage - Dissolute

• to the use of different labels for key knowledge elements,

• to suggestions to rethink entire parts• to the introduction of new chapters

and sections••• 5

Page 6: 8 rr2025-missikoff

Summary of comments & suggestions

• Make evident that Chapter 1 is a framing / introd chapter.

• Add a diagram representing the FInES Knowledge Spaces

• Provide a view of the interplay (ako ‘fil rouge’) of the different knowledge spaces

Further comments

• On the EB extended meeting (in the Commission) of end Sept 2011 was decided to freeze the Knowledge Architecture

• Updates would be on specific issues, in absence of some contradicting evidence

• But big effort will be put on the collaborative elaboration of the FInES RR

• Beyond collaborative commenting: building a consituency ‘àla Wikipedia’

••• 10

Page 11: 8 rr2025-missikoff

Further advices

General – Focus on advanced research, avoiding to

addressing topics/technologies that presumably will be maturing in the next years (e.g., SOA)

– Introduce an Executive Summary (10p? May be 2p)

– Introduce a level for “Grand Challenges” introducing 3 Grand Challenges to opt for in the next years (…. But our horizon is 2025)

– Create explicit links to EISB (… ok, but is should be symmetrical, from EISB to FInES RR as well)

– Introduce Timelines / Recommendations for the different Stakeholders

••• 11

Page 12: 8 rr2025-missikoff

Specific comments

• Grand Objectives become Qualities of Being then another proposal: Enterprise Qualities)

• Add Sensing Enterprise• Green Enterprise Sustainable Enterprise• Cloud Enterprise Liquid Enterprise• The cycle - Invent / Plan / Build / Operate / Manage: not a

linear process• Change ‘Quality of Being’ into ‘Enterprise Qualities’• Include also the idea of Dissolution• Future Internet ... term over-used. May by use Multinet?

Futurenet? Converging Net?• Swarm Computing, as IoT computing

••• 12

Page 13: 8 rr2025-missikoff

Proposal

• We will consolidate the current architecture, introducing the focused suggestions FInES RR v.1.9

• Big / diverging intervention will be hosted in specific Annexes

• We launch the final phase to have the final RR end of Fanruary

• Please use the most easy way to send your opinions: Cluster portal, collaboration environment (CommentPress), Wiki, ...

••• 13

Page 14: 8 rr2025-missikoff

Future Activities

• Consolidation of Vers. 1.9– Early Jan 2012– 20 December 2011

• Activate a wide consultation process– 1 month until early Feb 2012

• Issueing of the ‘Final’ FInES RR 2.0– End of February

• Start the design of the: – OnLine FInES Research Roadmap– The supporting consituency– Terminate August 2012

ADDITIONAL SLIDES

Page 16: 8 rr2025-missikoff

1. A Vision on the Socio-economic Space in 2025

1. The need for a socio-economic discontinuity

2. Different growths for wealth and well-being in reduced economic expansion

2b. The Operational Dimension

The following operational areas are connected in a spiral/fractal fashion

• Invent• Plan• Build• Operate• Manage&Monitor• Dissolute

••• 19

Page 20: 8 rr2025-missikoff

2c. New approaches for Future Enterprises Governance

• Enterprise as a complex artefact• Enterprise Engineering: need for a

systematic approach• A World of Models, based on Design

Science• But... Accepting the limitations of a

modelling approach• Surviving with partial models, to be

addressed with Complexity Theory• E.g., from BPM to Complex Event Proc

••• 20

Page 21: 8 rr2025-missikoff

2. Enterprise Space key comments

• the “value creating" models (constellations) are replacing the traditional “value adding" ones, such as value chain.

• “Inventive” is a too demanding characteristic for an enterprise

• Enterprise Engineering methods address low-level practical issues, missing the holistic socially interlinked trends

• Humanities, natural sciences and the arts need to be considered in harmony to support a successful FI enterprise

• Green Enterprise… enough! Better Recycling Enterprise

••• 21

Page 22: 8 rr2025-missikoff

3. The Future Internet-based Enterprise Systems

This the Core Space, organised in three dimensions:

1. Knowledge Dimension, since before doing it is necessary to know,

2. Functional Dimension, to see what will be the main functions of a FInES,

3. Engineering Dimension investigate new development techniques, with a specific focus on software applications.

Each dimension will be articulated with its Research Challenges

••• 22

Page 23: 8 rr2025-missikoff

3.1 The Knowledge Dimension

RC1. Unified Digital Enterprisefull digital image of the enterprise (Enterprise

Architecture Fwk), with conceptual and factual (data) knowledge, behavioural and structural aspects, at various levels of details

RC2. Linked Open Knowledgeto connect and integrate actual knowledge/ data,

in/outside of the enterprise (Web of Knowledge)

RC3. Complex Systems Modellingwith sections fully specified and sections

characterised by non deterministic behaviour

3.2 The Functional Dimension of a FInES

RC4. Innovation-oriented enterprise production platforms

RC9. Flexible Execution platforms (Exec)Different integrated paradigms, Agents, Smart

Objects, Utility and Commodity Clouds

••• 25

Page 26: 8 rr2025-missikoff

The Science Base of FInES

• Much of the above Research Challenges need rigorous, well-founded approaches

• In the future FInES researches it is highly advisable to include activities related to Science Base

• Beyond EISB. E.g.:– Design Science– Complexity Theory– Fuzzy self-organising systems– Semantics– Enterprise Engineering

••• 26

Page 27: 8 rr2025-missikoff

4. Future Technologies for FInES

ICTs are not our core research interest, but we rely on to achieve the sought FInES

• Networking• Knowledge• Application• Computation and Storage• Natural interaction

••• 27

Page 28: 8 rr2025-missikoff

4. Future Technologies for FInES

A Possible Dream

• Possibility of Governance of research initiatives and programs

• FInES Research Roadmap as a ‘territory’ to explore

• Projects are the ‘explorers’– Where are their research efforts heading to?– Can we trace their achievements?– Are there (undiscovered) overlappings?

Complementarities?– What are the ‘crwded territories? And the

unexplored ones?••• 34
