This fall, our recreation and program registration staff received an intensive training from the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center at SUNY Cortland in partnership with Rochester Accessible Adventures. The training included a 10-hour on-line certification course as well as a mentored inclusivity assessment and two-day site visit, which looked at the Department’s physical accessibility, administrative practices, and recreation program practices as they related to including ALL members of our community. Our Department was the 1st Department of Parks and Recreation in the Rochester – Genesee Region to receive this training and to date, one of only twenty agencies in New York State! Some of the outcomes of this inclusivity training will be a revised mission and vision statement, updated signage at our trail facilities to promote knowledge of our extensive accessible trail networks on the Auburn and Lehigh Valley Trails, minor modifications to our Recreation Center and park facilities to enhance their accessibility as well as the designation of an “Inclusion Coordinator” from within our staff to facilitate participant inclusivity within our recreation programs. While this “new” effort will require ongoing awareness and actions on the part of our Department, we are extremely excited to get started this year. Ultimately, a more inclusive community is a healthier community and that is what we strive for in Victor! This winter, we are adding sections to our popular pickleball program. If you haven’t played or watched the sport of pickleball yet, please stop by the Recreation Center on Tuesday mornings or Thursday afternoons to check it out! Also, we are gearing up for the youth ski and snowboard clubs which will travel down to Bristol Mountain on Monday and Friday nights. Our program has expanded over the past couple of years to include youth in Grades 4th – 12th. Please consult this brochure to learn more. As always, you can join Chris O’Connor and her diehard volleyball players on Wednesday nights in our gymnasium for some exercise and socialization and if you are a budding artist, the Victor Art Club meets every other Tuesday night at the Recreation Center. As always, if you would like to become involved in the long-range planning for the Department of Parks and Recreation, our Parks and Recreation Citizens’ Advisory Committee meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm with meetings open to the public.

Have a safe and happy Holiday season!Brian C. Emelson, CPRE • Director of Parks and Recreation

SWIM LESSON LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Note: If needed, participants may be moved to a more appropriate level on the first day of class.

Tots: Preschool age children 3 – 5 years old will receive an introduction to water in a controlled and comfortable environment. Using a “Tot Dock,” children will be in shallow water in a fun, friendly and safe environment. This is for children only (not parent/child) with a small class size.

Introduction to Level 1: This is for children 4-5 years old who are unable to stand in the shallow end but are ready for more independence than the tot program. They will work on floating independently, flutter kicking and rolling over onto their back. These skills are essential in keeping this age group safe in both pools and lakes. Upon passing this level, it is possible the child may be ready for level 2 (Instructor’s discretion).

Level 1 (Beginner 1): If your child is under the age of 6, please refer to Intro to Level 1. This group is for children who are able to stand in the shallow end independently. They will work on putting their face in the water, blowing bubbles and floating on their front or back.

Level 2 (Beginner 2): Children in this group can float a little and feel comfortable with their faces in the water, but are still working on making progress through the water.

Level 3 (Beginner 3): This group can swim in the shallow end with their faces in the water, but continue to work on the confidence to feel comfortable in water over their head.

Level 4 (Advanced Beginner): Children can swim in the deep end but are working on rhythmic breathing on front crawl and performing the elementary backstroke.
