Xanthi is a Thracian town, capital city
of the homonymous Prefecture. Built on the foothills
of Rodopi mountain range, at the beginning of a valley which
expands towards the south to the Thracian Sea.
The Municipality of Xanthi is one of the 4 Municipalities of the
Prefecture of Xanthi.
Its population is based on the census of 2011 is the 64.450
Citizens. The town of Xanthi, Kimmeria Evmoiro and Stavroupoli are the main
settlements of the Municipality.

City of XanthiThe contemporary town is a pole of attraction for
everyday life. Shops, squares, parks, halls of
entertainment such as cafes, restaurants, taverns, etc,
with great aesthetic.Also with candy shops which are
known not only in Greece but also all over Europe
having special tastes such as the karioka and saragli.
The famous aromatic tobacco known in all over the
world called Basmas is produced in the region of
Xanthi. In earlier days Xanthi was called as the
“arhontisa” (noble woman) due to the prosperity
that came through tobacco merchandise and this
way Xanthi became popular.

City of XanthiSince 1975 the town of Xanthi hosts the Polytechnic School, which is a part of
Democritus University of Thrace, in which around
4000 students study. The scientific and cultural
drive and sense of innovation from both students
and professors offer an alternative suggestion
of living in this town as well.
The cultural life of the town is intense, as well as its
rhythms of life. The Thracian Folk Festival-Xanthian
Carnival, known all over Greece. Another festivity is
the Old Town Festival, unique in its kind and
popular for its multiform. Manos Chatzidakis
Festival which is to honour our great composer and
many more happenings take place in this town.

Sightseeings Xanthi’s Open Market
• The open market of Xanthi is one of the mostsignificant places of development of open-aircommerce in Northern Greece. It attracts thousands of visitors every year. It takes place every Saturday.
• Christian, Muslims, gypsies, as well as home-comersfrom countries of former Soviet Union, even Africansand Chinese people co-exist harmonically, giving aspecial colour to the open market.
• At the stalls one shall find from fruit and vegetablesuntil carpets, blankets, clothes and shoes and all kindof domestic usage and games.

OLD TOWN•
The Old Town of Xanthi is situated at its north part being ahistoric core and covers 380.000 m² of surface.
• The town is built after 1829. It is the year when strongearthquakes destroy the former settlement. The town isbuilt on the remains having as core the churches, which
pre-existed from the Byzantine Xanthia, as the town wascalled in the ancient times.
• During the 19th century, Xanthi is referred to as a smallcountry town having 8000 citizens. But there was economicprosperity due to the cultivation, processing,
manufacturing and distribution of tobacco and its products,as well as due to the advantageous position of themerchant routes.

The Identity of our School
Our school is located in a small village called
Chrisa, only three kilometers from the capital of our prefecture which is called Xanthi.
The total number of pupils is one hundred and
thirty.In our school work fourteen teachers.
The 8th primary School of Xanthi was founded in
1928.The building is constructed of stone and the total
area is 480m² (square meters).

The Identity of our School
Our school has 6 classes, the teacher’s office ,storage rooms and libraries.
There are also two supportive classes, for the pupilswith learning difficulties which mainly come from
minority groups, such as Muslims or economicalrefugees.
Our priority is to cover all the special needs of pupils that come from disadvantaged groups.
