shouted to the crowds: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!”

The people of Nineveh believe:

The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.

The king believes:When the king of Nineveh heard what

Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He

dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes. Then the king and his

nobles sent this decree throughout the city…

beginning of obedience to God.”

40 days to change…Who knows?!

No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at

all. People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and

stop all their violence. Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back

his fierce anger from destroying us.

Be thankful that our God is…

“…compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”

Repentance is connected to action:

Each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give

the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must

work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to

share with those in need.

Repentance is connected to action:Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of

your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed

for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander,

along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each

other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
