STANDERTON - In a dramatic turn of events, Lekwa Municipal Manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, was forcibly removed from office by angry SAMWU members on Monday morning, 4 April. Workers stormed into the Manager’s office and requested him to vacate the office. He defended himself by saying he’s due back after his extended special leave expired on 31 March. Workers argued that he must remain on leave until the MEC’s Section 106 investigation is completed and the report is tabled to SAMWU by the MEC of CoGTA, Ms Refilwe Motshweni.

Mr Vusi Dhlamini, the chairman of the local SAMWU branch said that workers were aware that the special leave granted to the manager expires on 31 March, as SAMWU wrote a letter to the Executive Mayor of Lekwa Municipality, Councillor Linda Dhlamini, to extend the manager’s leave until the MEC’s investigation and report was submitted per agreement, reached on 8 March, between the MEC and SAMWU. The Executive Mayor did not respond to the letter until the following Monday when the Municipal Manger reported to work. “We made it very clear to the MM that he must stay away from the office until we receive a report from the MEC,” Mayor Dhlamini said.

Scores of municipal workers left the areas in which they were

working and waited outside the municipal building, while about twenty workers led by SAMWU leaders went to remove the manager from his office. Initially the manager was reluctant to move out, but workers pleaded with him to move out peacefully. He obliged and walked out. He was followed to his car in the parking lot from where he drove away. Workers returned to work peacefully but vowed to return to remove him if he dares come back again before the MEC’s report is released.

When asked for comment, Tshabalala gave this statement: “I am still busy with the police. My statement is basically that the employees involved in this have other motives than labour relations. It is my understanding that all issues in their memorandum were addressed. The corruption allegation requires them to provide evidence - to date there is none. I sense very deep hatred from one or two shop stewards and that is unfair.

Unfortunately they are very intimidating toward other employees, they have no respect for authority at all. Unfortunately South Africa has laws which guarantee rights, with responsibilities. Peaceful demonstrations will always be supported, but any criminal behaviour or misconduct at the workplace should never be allowed or condoned by any patriotic citizen.” DM

STANDERTON – Lekwa Local Municipality’s woes are far from over. If the council can adhere to their legislative obligations this time around and do the honourable thing by investigating suspected financial mismanagement as the Auditor General’s report recommends - surely without doubt heads must roll. The municipality has received yet another damning Auditor General report. This new report comes at a time when the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs(COGTA), Ms Refilwe Motshweni, is in possession of a dossier including allegations of financial mismanagement.

The documents were handed to the MEC at the beginning of March after municipal workers downed tools for two weeks, demanding the municipal manager to step down because of allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. This led the MEC to apply Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act to the troubled municipality. Subsequently, while the investigation is underway, another report which has put the council under extreme pressure to act against those that might be found guilty of financial misconduct, has emerged. The onus lies with the council to move swiftly and institute their legislative obligations without fear or favour.

Members of SAMWU who did not want their identity revealed, reacted angrily to the report and strongly believe the council must institute an investigation as a matter of urgency. They warned the Executive Mayor that a repeat of the 2009 episode will be an unfortunate. They reminded the council that in 2008 the ANC Youth League submitted a string of serious allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement and misconduct against the former Executive Mayor, Councillor Juliet Radebe, to the MEC. After forensic investigations, the MEC submitted a report and recommendations.

Those recommendations were not implemented and subsequently the report was swept under the carpet. Chaos erupted in 2009 and Lekwa Local Municipality experienced the biggest mass protest that brought the town under siege.

The ANC head-office had to intervene and subsequently the Mayor and the Mayoral Committee was fired and the municipality was placed under administration. It must be said that the majority of the current crop of ANC councillors were behind the mass protest. Now it is their turn to show fairness and deliver on the so-called zero-tolerance approach. DM

STANDERTON - Criminals have been targeting soya beans lately and police are concerned. Three weeks ago, a truck with a full load of soya beans was offloaded during the night by unknown thugs at a truck stop in Walter Sisulu Drive, while the driver was sleeping. The load was destined for the Noble Factory in Standerton. Police have registered a case of hijacking after a truck loaded with soya beans was hijacked in Volksrust on Thursday evening, 31 March.According to SAPS, the truck was travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to deliver its load at Noble in the Industrial area in Standerton. While the driver was waiting at the last traffic light out of Volksrust, two unknown men opened the passenger door and ordered him to

stop a few metres past the traffic light. One of the suspects then allegedly produced a firearm and threatened to shoot him if he does not comply. Both his hands and feet were tied with tape and his mouth was taped shut as well. The suspects then reportedly drove the truck to Standerton while the driver was made to lie face down. The truck stopped at the weigh bridge next to Extension 6 and the full load of soya beans was offloaded into another truck. The suspects allegedly drove off and left the truck driver unharmed. He managed to free himself and walked to the Police Station to report the incident. Colonel Motubane confirmed the incident and police are investigating a case of vehicle hijacking. DM

I went to pay services rendered to me as I do every month. I paid for three different houses as usual, but when my statements came, money wasn’t shown on the statements of the following month as usual. I went to the municipal office to ask why, but when I came to the win-dow after a lady helped me, she took my slip and said she wanted to go and check what had happened on the computers. She came back and said that computers were offline and I must return the following day.

I asked for the slip back and she said she was sorry and that she had forgotten it there on the computer’s desk. She returned to collect it and when she came back she said that she couldn’t find it but to please come back the following day when she would give it back to me. I was stupid to trust her and not take her

name.When I returned the following

day, no-one remembered helping me. I tried to describe the lady but no-one there fitted the description. The slip (which could show my problem) had vanished and I had no more proof. My money of R2 400 was drained, because I paid R800 toward each house.

It happened again, but this time I contacted the MM via SMS. I ex-plained everything and he said it was my constitutional right to go to court. I tried to find a second opinion, but to reach those peo-ple/offices was like trying to visit Obama’s country where you need visa. At a national level it is not as hard to reach them. What does it mean, for these local government people, to be a servant? Jesus left the Kingdom because he chose to be

a servant. In my next step, I found Betrice at the Mayor’s office and told her everything. She promised to book me in. Until today I am still waiting for that appointment. I also called and SMSed the mayor. No response found. This time I lost R1 200 because I paid R400 toward each house.

Now I wil ask the court to help me find where my money went, if the municipality doesn’t respond within 14 days from the publication of this letter in the newspaper. I also want to make the community alert to the situation and check their municipal slips and statements, because they might be the victims of the circum-stances.

This is why our municipal bills go higher and higher without any rea-son as to why. Worried community member

(Prediker 9: 7)

So het Dalrize toe ont-staan.

By Dalrize ervaar hulle aller-hande eerstes.

Dit maak vándag nog haar hart warm as kinders - jare nadat hulle by haar skool gekry het - steeds kom kuier, bel of kontak maak.

Jy mag maar lag “Where did my money go?”

JD

PROVINCIAL - On 9 and 10 April all un-registered South Africans will have another opportunity to register to vote in the up-coming Local Government Elections. The ANC’s tight grip on Mpumalanga has left our beautiful province marred by the deep scars of corruption, maladministration and inequality. While many enjoy the benefits of South Africa’s hard won democracy, too many citizens of Mpumalanga are still liv-ing in poverty with little access to quality education and healthcare.

In recent years, the provincial Department of Health has deteriorated rapidly and all ef-forts to revive it have fallen flat. Much to the dismay of the Democratic Alliance, we have found that the Health Department, in blatant defiance to the Human Rights Com-missioner’s recommendations, also failed to implement its turnaround strategy. This has forced thousands of Mpumalanga residents to continue using dilapidated healthcare fa-cilities that often go for long periods with-out dispensing the necessary medication.

The Department of Economic Develop-ment fairs no better as it too has continu-ously failed to boost the economic growth of the province.

To realise the goals of the National De-velopment plan, the province and the rest of the country’s economy needs to grow at a minimum of 5% per annum yet the pro-vincial economy is expected to grow at less than 1% this year and at less than 2% over the next four years.

Mpumalanga Premier, David Mabuza

has been followed by allegations of corrupt activity since his days as the MEC of Ag-riculture. To this day, Premier Mabuza is still haunted by the Ndwandwa Community Trust Claim with farms worth R51 million that has been questioned since it was insti-tuted more than 10 years ago.

The DA is also still waiting for the public Protector to release her findings on the Pre-mier and his Executive’s exorbitant usage of tax payer’s money to purchase multiple luxury vehicles.

The Democratic Alliance has proven time and time again that it is the party for change, and that it is committed to the delivery of quality services and clean governance for all. The fact that where the DA governs, life is indeed better had even been validated by the Government Performance Index, which stated that nine out of the 10 best-run mu-nicipalities are governed by the DA.

The people of Mpumalanga deserve a clean government that cares about its peo-ple instead of a government were politicians play hide-and-seek with the very same peo-ple who voted them into power. The DA is the only party that can make good gover-nance a reality in Mpumalanga and call on each and every eligible resident of Mpuma-langa to use this opportunity to register to vote for change in the upcoming Local Gov-ernment Elections.

The time for change in Mpumalanga has come, and it starts with registering for change on the 9th and 10th of April. (James Masango, MPL) JD

STANDERTON – For the first time in many years, there were no reported accidents along the R23.

This was largely due to law enforcement agents’ high visibility and good behaviour by most road users. It all started on Thursday, 24 March, when Mpumalanga Traffic Officers mounted an operation in the form of a road block at the weigh bridge adjacent to the R23 near Extension 6. Hundreds of vehicles were pulled from the road. Officers checked defects on vehicles and paid particular attention to public transport, which include minibus taxis and buses. Numerous taxi operators were penalized for overloading, for being unroadworthy and some received heavy fines for driving without lawful permits to carry passengers.

About 50 minibus taxis and vehicles were impounded for outstanding traffic fines. Traffic officers demanded payment on the spot before that particular vehicle would be released to move along. Passengers were urged to refrain from putting pressure on taxi drivers to drive

fast, as they usually want to reach their destination on time. Traffic officers were visible at every fifty kilometres along the R23. Scores of drivers and passengers alike complimented officials for their zero tolerance approach. Operation Paseka was carried out throughout the whole weekend. SAPS conducted stop and search operations of their own. Fourteen motorists were arrested for drunken driving. On average, 500 vehicles were passing through Standerton every hour. Lekwa Municipality traffic officials managed to control the flow of traffic with great care and attention.

Standerton Police Station recorded 10 house burglaries, one business burglary, and one house robbery. In most of the cases where homes were broken into, the occupants were away from home. Police have always appealed to the public to make sure that there is somebody to look after the house if and when the family goes to church or on holiday. In the end, operation Paseka has yielded good results. DM

Ms Lungile Makgabane of Mpumalanga Road Safety and Ms Jabu Dlamini of the Road Accident Fund spoke to passengers and wished them a safe journey.

STANDERTON - Members of the community in Thuthukani reacted angrily to the high rate of drug abuse that is ravaging the small mining community.

They openly expressed outrage about drug dealers who have invaded the area and sell drugs to the young people. The situation came to light during a commu-nity Imbizo that was organized by the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison on Wednesday, 30 March, at Lwazi Primary School.

The Imbizo was part of an awareness campaign man-aged by the department as an outreach programme to make communities aware of all forms of criminal ele-ments and abuse.

Stakeholders from different state departments, com-munity based organizations such as the Community Policing Forum, community development workers and active leadership. Ms Nompumelelo Shiba from the Department of Social Services, was the main speaker who explained the various forms of abuse such as emo-tional, physical, economical and verbal abuse.

When all the guest speakers had made their inputs,

members of community lashed out at the drug dealers who have turned the community into a sort of haven for crime. They lamented having to watch young people addicted to drugs and commit crimes to have cash every day to feed their drug habits.

A spokesperson for the community who wanted to re-main anonymous told the media that drug dealers sell substances openly and without fear. They claim to have a connection with law enforcement agencies. “These people have no sense of humanity, they rejoice in seeing children committing crimes to making money”.

They are killing our children, and most of the young boys are schools dropouts and young girls fall pregnant at the tender age of thirteen years. Our children have no future,” the spokesperson said.

The community have vowed to work with SAPS to fight crime. They have committed themselves to join ranks with the CPF and start street patrols. A few hous-es were identified as drug hotspots and it is up to the police to act on this information. The Standerton SAPS sees this problem in a very serious light. DM

STANDERTON - The launching of the Victim Empowerment Centre in Thuthu-kani, late in 2015, has been welcomed by the community. Five dedicated women have taken the responsibility to serve the community as volunteers to run the cen-tre. The office situated at the RDP houses is open on Monday to Friday from 08:00 - 17:00. In the event that people should need assistance after hours or over week-ends, somebody will be on standby.

Victims receive counselling at the centre, but if the need arises, SAPS are informed and the victim is collected to be taken to a place of safety in Standerton. The process of referral to social workers then follows. The community of Thuthukani is therefore urged to use the facility and report any form of abuse before it is too late. For more information people can call Standerton SAPS at 017 719 1250. DM

JD

VOLKSRUST - Wanneer dit by plaas-like skoonhede kom, is die Volksrust-ge-meenskap almal voor.

DK

STANDERTON - The irons were once again in full swing at Standerton Country Club this past weekend when 24 local golfers teed off for the Monthly Mug on Saturday, 2 April. The day ended on a very good note for Gerrit Coetzee, Tertius Brits and Koos van Wyk who scored the overall best gross scores in the competition – Coetzee with 74 strokes in the A division, Brits with 81 strokes in the C division and Van Wyk with 98 strokes in the C division.

Aldo Arnaldi took home first place in the A division with 70 strokes, followed by Casper Roux with a score of 71 strokes. The B division of the competition also

didn’t disappoint, with Tertius Brits raking in first place with a score of 68 strokes. Kalie Coetzee took home second place, also with 68 strokes.

As for the C division, Jacques Scholtz emerged victorious with 74 strokes, closely followed by Koos van Wyk with a score of 79 strokes. The undefeated Patrizia Lombard took home top honours in the women’s division with a score of 80 strokes

It was an exciting and action-packed day, but in the end only these four players managed to achieve two clubs: Attie Mouton (x2), Koos van Wyk, Ruan Botha and Casper Roux. DK

Die Ermeloërs was onoorwonne in ál

Vrede-Borgdag haar gunsteling is.

JD
