Art4Action is a fund-raising event in support of Purbeck’s artists, and the Dorset Coronavirus Community Fund, taking place on Sunday 14th June from 3.00 pm.
Art4Action Auction is brought to you by Purbeck Art Weeks (PAW) Festival and Wareham Tower Chimes magazine with the support of Wareham Town Council. 60% of the proceeds will go to the artists, 25% will go to the Dorset Coronavirus Community Fund, and 15% to PAW Festival Charity.
Please note that the prices in the catalogue are estimates, and they do not include Postage, Packaging or Insurance. See the final page for full terms and conditions of the auction.
Purbeck Art Weeks does a huge amount to support the arts across Purbeck, including in the community and in schools. PAW took a heavy financial hit when they had to cancel the Festival this year, and it will take some time to rebuild the coffers. This will help start that process. For more info about the artists please go to the PAW website.

The Dorset Community Foundation launched the Dorset Coronavirus Community Fund to support local charities and voluntary organisations that are assisting some of Dorset’s most vulnerable people during the Coronavirus epidemic. The aim of the Fund is to support local voluntary and community organisations that are helping vulnerable people impacted by the Covid-19 crisis; easing the immediate difficulties communities are facing and to support their recovery over the coming weeks and months.

ANDY KNILL
Andy has lived in Purbeck since 2016. He spent 30 years teaching Geography and is now a retired teacher. Andy started sketching as a mindfulness exercise in
2015 to help his depression.
Before moving to Purbeck Andy had drawn with Urban Sketcher groups in
London and Cambridge and was developing his pen based drawing style
and technique. He discovered Promarker pens which he does the majority of his
colour pieces with.
In January 2017 Andy launched himself as a local artist. He has been developing his work and portfolio since. He has had an Open Studio in PAW for the last 3 years.
He is a member of the Purbeck Arti-san Yard and is now joint tenant in The

ANNIE LOVELASS
My passion is painting the sea and landscapes from around Purbeck and
Dorset’s Jurassic coastline and my native West Wales. I use acrylics/mixed media on canvas to try and capture the mood and movement of the water. I also love portraiture – especially old faces- to try
and capture their life in paint is always a challenge.
I am always excited about starting a new work, a bit scared as well… that blank
white canvas is a bit like starting a journey without being sure that all the directions are right! Colour, light and shape play an important part in my
journey across the canvas. I always hope that the finished work will add those dimensions to a space or room and
generate an emotional smile in response. I have always believed that art should add a little joy to life and if mine
achieves that… then I’m happy.

CAROLINE GRAY
Fashion has always been part of my life and before moving to Dorset from
Tunbridge Wells five years ago I worked as a professional photographer, mainly in
fashion, film stills, music live and videos. As there is little call for this on the Isle of Purbeck, and always had a
love of flowers, I started to take photos of these, along with many sunsets.
Still wanting to work in Fashion though I would use my training in fashion design another way. In 2018, I started to design and handcraft jewellery, working mainly in Resin, Clay, Copper and Silver. During this odd time, we are living in, with all

During this odd time, we are living in, with all
my events cancelled, I turned my sewing machine into a workhorse by
making scrub bags for NHS, face masks for Care homes in Swanage and to sale.
On the jewellery side, I designed a brooch to raise fund for the NHS.

FEN D’LUCIE
Fen undertook Art History & Drawing at college in Somerset. On leaving college her art was put on hold for many years
as she worked for employers in unrelated streams. In the early 2000’s she returned to art for her own pleasure. In 2016 Fen took early retirement allowing time to
diversify in media & attend courses providing learning from a range of styles & teachers: clay sculpture in Somerset &
Devon with further courses on wax modelling in Dorset, where she now
lives.
Inspiration generally comes from the liv-ing world. Utilizing various elements of
previous employment, but particularly Personal Training, Fen applies her deep understanding of
anatomy & physiology. Sculptures are cast in Bronze. All of which are one-off, unique, signed pieces. This is because she works in wax which melts away in
the ‘lost-wax’ casting process. Sculptures come with a signed certificate

GILL WILLIAMS
I am a Dorset artist and children’s book author and illustrator. My images have been influenced by the beauty of the
natural environment. My paintings are in water-colours overlaid with pen and ink.
In 2017, I was captivated by the patterns of a starling murmuration at Shell Bay,
Studland and my “Mesmerizing Murmuration” image was on the front of Purbeck Art Weeks Events Programme.
Last year my commission titled “Starling Dance” for the “Brother Wolf” business
was used for a range of organic and ethical clothing.
Most of my life I have been fortunate enough to have lived in Dorset and I
cannot remember when wildlife did not fascinate me. My past career was a
Primary School Teacher in Poole, Dorset. At present, I exhibit at Purbeck New
Wave Gallery, Swanage; where I steward with other local artists and work on my
paintings.

Fiona has been making pots for over 40 years. Trained at evening classes and a one-year course at Goldsmiths’ College, London (1981-2) potting took a back seat while working in tourism and construc-
tion and the births of four daughters, but she was gradually able to dedicate more
time to this passion, selling widely at fairs and galleries in Dorset, Hampshire
and Wiltshire.
Having sold at galleries in Wareham since the 90’s the opportunity arose to take over the Creative Gallery in St John’s Hill, Wareham in 2015 – the Gallery is
now run as a co-operative of eight mak-ers, who take turns to look after sales, allowing Fiona to spend more time in her workshop. There is a programme
of guest makers, with monthly changing exhibitions.
Clay is a quite magical material – turning the soft material into a functional piece
of stoneware pottery is a delight.

At present, I exhibit at Purbeck New
Wave Gallery, Swanage; where I steward with other local artists and work on my
paintings.

portraits of my family and trying to copy my father’s collection of old

JENNY HAWKE
I’m a landscape artist, using watercolour and ink to portray the
beauty of the local Dorset landscape. I love the unpredictability of the medium, as well
as the fluidity and the textures that the paints create on the page. My work
focuses on the vibrant natural colours found throughout the seasons, as well as the shapes of the fields and coastlines of
Dorset. Often my paintings draw on a sense of space of the landscape, with a flock of birds in flight to give a feeling of the scale
of the landscape.
I exhibit regularly in Dorset, Surrey, and London, as well as being the published illus-trator and author of several books, includ-ing ‘Elephants in the Rush Hour’ and ‘There was a Garden’. I also write a thought for the
day, combined with a painting, which can be found at

I hope that my paintings convey a sense of the peace found in the Dorset landscape,
asking the viewer to pause and take time to reflect.

JESSAMY HAWKE
I’m an illustrator and landscape artist working in watercolour and gouache. My
work draws on the two themes of literature and landscape, where I’m
interested in connecting painting with stories and poems about nature, as well as using illustration and hand-drawn maps to
document my own experience of a landscape.
My aim is to translate a sense of a place into my drawing and painting, focusing on
the lines, textures, and natural colours found in my surroundings. By
painting on-site at various locations in Dorset, I paint scenes to capture my experience, document my route, and reference the landscape’s history. I’m
particularly interested in the patterns of Dorset’s fields, trees, and hedgerows, as well as the unique rock formations along
the coast. With my illustrations, maps, and paintings, I hope to engage the viewer with
the landscape as I’ve experienced it.
I’m also a published children’s illustrator, having recently illustrated two books for
DK, titled ’Explorers’ and ‘Inventors’.

JILL MIRZA
I have spent most of my life being involved in the making of paintings. I
studied painting at The Royal Academy Schools. For sixteen years, I
was involved in running an Art Gallery in Swanage with my partner. I have written articles for fine art magazines and was commissioned to produce a book about colour called ‘Mix your own Acrylics’. I
have exhibited in London, and in galleries and Art Fairs around the country. I was trained in a very
traditional ethos, taught to observe carefully and to respond to the wonder of visual subtleties. That training has
stayed with me always, I am compelled to look intently and record what I see. There is also, inevitably, a narrative
concern and a wish to make observations about how humanity relates
to the world.
My paintings are an exploration of my immediate surroundings and of images I
record when travelling.
LOTS 122 - 131
122
Arles Café with Red UmbrellasAcrylic on Canvas Board
35.5 x 45.5cm, framed: 49 x 59 cm
The strong sunlight depicted in this painting emphasis-es the dark interiors of this scene and the heavy
shadows are stronger in tone than the objects which cast them. The café is presented as a kind of stage
set with the umbrellas and furniture playing roles as significant as the figures.
Estimate: £360.00 - £720.00
123
Below The Acropolis, with CypressAcrylic on Canvas
20 x 20cm, framed: 40.5 x 40.5cm
This painting is a snapshot image from travelling in Greece. Working on this small scale makes me use simple gestures and keep the marks as fresh and
telling as possible. These small paintings make very satisfactory objects and work very well when a number
of them are hung close together.
Estimate: £90.00 - £180.00
124
Café with Awning: HydraAcrylic on Canvas
40 x 40cm, framed: 45.5 x 45.5cm
The drama of the shadows and shapes, including the interplay between horizontals and verticals, created
by the awnings in this image contrasts with the solidity of the figures waiting quietly in the Spring sunshine. The cool colours of the buildings have not yet been
enlivened by the scorching sun of Summer.
Estimate: £360.00 - £720.00

Cat Sitting on a WallAcrylic on Canvas
30 x 30cm, framed: 37 x 37cm

wall to one side.

40 x 40cm, framed: 45.5 x 45.5cm
This image is cool and spacious, illustrating a place waiting for the crowds. The figures grouped near the edges, give a sense of scale but are incidental. The shapes of the chairs and the play of the stripes on
the canvas engage the eye, and lead through to the distance.
Estimate: £360.00 - £720.00

White Sailing Boat in Swanage BayAcrylic on Canvas
30.5 x 30.5cm, framed: 40.5 x 40.5cm
Set against the ‘Downs’ surrounding Swanage Bay the white boat rocks on a disturbed sea. The little blocks of colour of the buildings and beach huts break up the green of the fields and decorate the water’s edge. The image attempts to capture the freshness of a breezy
summer’s day.
Estimate: £216.00 - £432.00

the canvas (or board) is the beginning of the painting and is very
carefully prepared. The understructure is as important as the paint and can dictate the passage composition from concept to

KATIE HESLOP
Working mainly in oils, I use colour and light and texture to capture the spirit of landscape and still life. My aim is to use loose brush strokes or palette knife
marks (often choosing to use an old credit card) to blend and scrape, putting paint on and pulling it off until I reach the point when I am fairly pleased with
the results.
I try to express emotions and give shape to things that are not necessarily seen (more a feeling perhaps?). More of my work can be seen at katieheslop.co.uk

Marion (Mars), originally from Somerset, studied at Yeovil College and then took a BA in 3D Design Ceramics
at Bath Academy of Art in the late 80s. After education, she collaborated with many local artists and was involved in
the first Somerset Arts Weeks as well as selling work at fairs and retail outlets
across the south west.
She moved to Purbeck in 2014 and after two years recovering from surgeries became involved in Purbeck Arts Weeks,
firstly as a ‘behind the doors’ photographer in 2017. Immersing herself in the work of others helped her PTSD symptoms and after 15 years of barely touching a brush or lump of clay, she
returned to her first love of drawing and ceramics, exhibiting in Rollington Barn in 2018/19 and Shop Dorset Makers 19/20. For six months, she was also a resident artist at the Purbeck New Wave Gallery

MARK PAGE
Mark has worked all his life in art and design. At the age of 20yrs he set up his own successful
design studio which ran for 30yrs before he diversified into interiors and other related projects. He has for the last 3yrs been a full time fine artist. He runs ‘Drink&draw’ and ‘Draw like a Pro’ classes in Bournemouth, Poole, Poundbury, Wareham and Swanage as well as private one to one tutoring.
Mark’s main body of work is in graphite, Ink and Charcoal. He has specialised from an early age with graphite, producing highly detailed drawings with an
architectural quality and conversely loose, rapid sketches...a quality he’s usually known for with his
range of quirky, mad hatter and wacky Hares. The inclusion of specialist colour pencils brings a
different dimension to his land and seascapes with dramatic skies and seas. Liquid ink applied directly to canvas produces a flowing translucent affect for
many of the alternative vista paintings.
Another project at present is the creation of large marker ink drawings directly onto canvas, these can
take over 60hrs of work as the process is restrictively slow due to the surface abrasion on
the market nib. The results though are unique and dramatic.
A former displayed portrait artist in Harrods of Lon-don Mark still produces Commissions in portraiture,
animals and architecture (homes).

such a beautiful and special place on the coast of Dorset, I find inspiration for my
work in quality of light, stunning landscapes and flora. I love
experimenting with colour and texture with a variety of materials; found
objects, plant materials, acrylic, oil pastels, soft pastels and more.

MON HAWLEY
From gaining a graphic design degree at London College of Communication I worked as a freelance designer both in London and Dorset. Fortunate to live in
such a beautiful and special place on the coast of Dorset, I find inspiration for my
work in quality of light, stunning landscapes and flora. I love
experimenting with colour and texture with a variety of materials; found
objects, plant materials, acrylic, oil pastels, soft pastels and more.
Having always loved painting/drawing I am now able to develop work full-time
at my studio in Purbeck.

PAUL LONGLAND
Based in the coastal town of Swanage I am an artist who mainly works in oil (but if the mood of the subject demands it, I will occasionally turn my hand to water
colour or acrylic).
I am inspired by the sea that surrounds the Purbeck area, the countryside that
pushes right up to the edge of the fascinating local terrain. Framed by
magnificent cliffs and coastline features of the Jurassic coast and coupled with its
history of industrial activity and maritime wildlife, the area is an infinite
source of interest and inspiration.
I think there is a quality to the light of the South West coast that is distinctive.
The way light falls across the ever changing mood of the surface of the sea
and interacts with the landscape, provides an element of uniqueness that
is a joy to witness.

Stacked Plastic ChairsAcrylic on canvas
46 x 46cm, with frame: 56 x 56cm
This painting concentrates attention on lines, shapes, colour, rhythms, balances and repetitions, to create a
coherently structured composition. The apparently mundane subject-matter of this painting provides an
opportunity to utilize variations of colour and shape for their own sake, where what is being depicted is secondary to non-figurative visual ingredients.
Estimate: £900.00 - £1800.00

The Gondoliers HatAcrylic on canvas
71 x 112cm, with frame: 90 x 131cm

PHIL HILL
I began to paint in the 1970s. Though self taught, I was considered sufficiently
accomplished to teach Art in Bournemouth for several years before
moving to Purbeck in 1980.
Over the years I have built a reputation for modern contemporary work, abstract and surreal, with echoes of art deco and
cubism. A blank canvas is challenging but full of potential. The sketch for a
composition may provide a beginning but as the picture builds so the composition
may change. When shapes are suggested, I pick up on them and work them into the composition balancing shape against shape, colour against
colour. There comes a point when all the elements are present and the
painting takes on a life of its own. That is the time to stop.
My work has been displayed in many exhibitions around the country. I call my
style anti depressionism.

SIMON POLKINGHORN
I have always been interested in the process of drawing and painting. The marks I make are in response to the
“atmosphere” of a particular subject. The process of drawing and painting is a
kind of “debate” in which I make a series of adjustments to discover and to capture the interplay of the colours and
forms of nature, and to find that “atmosphere”. I start each drawing or painting with the intention of learning something new, which is probably why
some people comment that my pictures look as if they are by different artists.
