THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ERIC MANGINIEric Mangini was named the 12th full-time head coach in the history of the Cleveland Browns franchise on January 8, 2009. For Mangini, it marked a return to his NFL roots, having kicked off his tenure in the league as a ball boy and an in-tern in the Browns’ public relations department in 1994. His tireless work ethic was just as evident in that fi rst year as it is today, a quality that led then-head coach Bill Belichick to add Mangini to

the team’s coaching staff in 1995. In his 15 years of NFL coaching experi-ence, Mangini has been a part of six teams that qualifi ed for the playoffs, including fi ve that captured division crowns and three that came away with the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions. During his fi rst year at the helm in Cleveland, Mangini displayed a sense of resiliency that rubbed off on his team and led to the Browns winning their fi nal four games of the year. Prior to being hired by the Browns, Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets (2006-08). In 2006, Mangini took over a team that had gone 4-12 the previous year and guided them to a record of 10-6 and a Wild Card playoff berth. The Jets started with a 5-5 mark before compiling victories in fi ve of their last six contests, including their fi nal three. Prior to joining the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-05). His fi rst fi ve seasons were spent as de-fensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to defensive coor-dinator in 2005. Mangini’s fi rst coaching opportunity came in 1995 as an assistant on the Browns’ staff. Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. Mangini was an assistant coach with the Jets under head coach Bill Parcells from 1997-99.

ABOUT THE PACKERSThe Packers posted an 11-5 record in 2009 and dropped a 51-45 deci-sion in Arizona in the opening round of the playoffs. Green Bay led the NFL in rushing defense a season ago, allowing just 83.3 yards on the ground per contest. The Packers are led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who fi nished last season fourth in the league in both passing yards (4,434) and touchdown passes (30). GREEN BAY PACKERS - MIKE McCARTHYMike McCarthy enters his fi fth season as the Packers head coach. In 2009, the Packers fi n-ished with an overall record of 11-5. He has led the Packers to a top-10 ranking in total offense each of his four seasons, joining New Orleans as the only teams to accomplish that from 2006-09. McCarthy has coached two of the four highest-scoring teams in franchise history (2007, 2009). Following an 8-8 rookie season at the helm, Mc-

Carthy led the Packers to a 13-3 mark in 2007 and a 6-10 record in 2008. McCarthy broke into the NFL as a quality control assistant with the Kan-sas City Chiefs in 1993. He remained with the Chiefs for six seasons and rose to quarterbacks coach, where he helped mentor Joe Montana, Rich Gannon and Elvis Grbac. McCarthy departed Kansas City to become Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach for a season before a fi ve-year stint as the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. In 2005, McCarthy became offensive coordinator in San Francisco. 2009 REGULAR SEASON RANKINGS

August 15, 2009Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wis.

Green Bay used two fi rst quarter touchdowns to help down Cleveland 17-0 in the 2009 pre-season opener for both teams at Lambeau Field. The Packers outgained the Browns 392-191, including 230 yards on the ground. Green Bay took the opening possession 78-yards for a score, capped off by a 53-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to wide re-ceiver Donald Driver. Quarterback Brady Quinn led the Browns on a 10-play opening drive to the Packers 13-yard line. Kicker Phil Dawson connected on a 31-yard fi eld goal that was nullifi ed by a holding penalty and the ensuing 41-yard fi eld goal try by Dawson sailed wide right. On the Packers next possession, the Browns were fl agged for defensive holding, after an unsuccessful fourth-and-fi ve try, giving Green Bay an automatic fi rst down. The Packers took advantage of the opportunity and added to their advantage after a two-yard touchdown plunge by running back Ryan Grant. With 1:50 remaining in the second quarter, Quinn led the Browns 49 yards to the Packers six-yard line, but an interception ended the scoring threat with 17 second left in the half. A fourth quarter 45-yard fi eld goal by Packers kicker Mason Crosby accounted for the game’s fi nal score.

STOUT AGAINST THE RUNAfter allowing eight individual 100-yard rushing performances in 2008, the Browns had just four running backs reach the 100-yard plateau against them last season. Cleveland did not allow 100-yard rushing performances in back-to-back games last year for the fi rst time since 1992.

ENDING ON A GOOD NOTEIn 2009, the Browns became just the second team in NFL history to start a season 1-11 and win its fi nal four games since the league switched to a 16 game schedule in 1978. Cleveland joined the 1993 New England Patriots as the only teams to accomplish that feat.

SACK ATTACKThe Browns fi nished with 40 sacks in 2009, the most since the team totaled 43 in 2001. The Browns recorded 11 multi-sack games last season, also the most since 2001. Cleveland had at least 1.0 sack from 16 players, the most since 2000, when 16 players registered at least 1.0 sack en route to a team total of 42.

WHAT A RUSHOver the last four games of the 2009 season, the Browns led the league in rushing offense with 900 yards.

Cleveland Browns at Green Bay Packers, Preseason Game 1 -12-

ERIC MANGINI SAID...(On what his priority is at camp)- “I’d say my biggest priority is for us to make sure that we really build on the lessons last year and there are a lot of guys that were here to the latter part of the season last year that understand what I’m looking for and what we need in terms of Browns football. I really felt that we played that way at the end of the season. You want to start at that point and each one of those guys that were here, needs to be a teacher, needs to help that happen a lot quicker than it did last year. It’s getting to that point, un-derstanding how we play each game. I’ve been happy with the work the guys have done and the way everybody has pitched in to make sure we get there a lot quicker.”

(On whether things have been different for him from last year)- “Yes, a few things have been different for me. I’d say there have been a couple changes around here. It’s been great. It’s nice to have Mike (Holmgren) and Tom (Heckert) and be able to really focus on coaching and that’s been a huge plus. You go through every offsea-son and evaluate the things that you did, whether it be game to game or the course of the season and you look at each phrase and you say, ‘Okay, that didn’t work out very well. Let’s change it.’ You try dif-ferent things to see if it works out better. I’d like to think that I do it each year and as the coaches do it each year, fi gure out how we can get better as a group, going through that process.”

(On the one thing that most needs to change this season)- “I don’t look at it as change as much as I look at it as being consistent with what we did at the end of last season. I thought we developed a lot over the course of last season and really understood how we had to play, what the approach had to be and what Browns football was and how we were going to be in each game. Those lessons are valuable if you can take those lessons and carry them over into the new season and also indoctrinating all the guys that have come in, whether it’s rookies or free agent and all of us helping them understand exactly what we have to do, the way we have to play in order to be success-ful.”

(On how the Family Day scrimmage went)- “It was a great day. I came in early this morning, saw the fans here early and you get that electric feeling that you always have when you are coming to the stadium. We’ve got the greatest, loudest group of fans that you are going to fi nd and we thank them for coming out here today and for showing all their support.” (On the stability at the quarterback position)- “I’ve really en-joyed getting to know both Jake (Delhomme) and Seneca (Wallace) and both guys who have different levels of experience, but have both played in games. Jake is an older guy who has got a real presence and he’s got a real control of the offense. He’s got a lot of respect, which is deserved for the things that he has been able to do, but he backs that up with his work ethic and he backs it up with his leader-ship, so that’s been fun. With Seneca, it’s the same thing. He was really in one system for a long time and has had one set of terminol-ogy and has had to learn new terminology and new things and that’s diffi cult to do. I think that the progress that he’s made from the spring to now is noticeable. With Colt (McCoy), he’s a young guy and he’s learning. He’s got a lot to learn, but he has the right attitude, the right approach. Brett (Ratliff) is going to compete in that group and he has got experience in the system, but not a lot of playing time. It’s a fun group to work with.”

(On the impact that Ben Watson makes on the team)- “He’s got a ton of experience. Our systems aren’t exactly alike but there’s plenty of carry over. He’s got familiarity. He’s a really good person and he’s a gifted athlete, so all those are pluses. Plus he’s a guy that’s been through a lot of winning, a lot of training camps, so that veteran ex-perience helps in the locker room as well.”

(On the rapport between Jake Delhomme and Ben Watson)- “It’s a positive thing and having a tight end that can stretch the fi eld puts more pressure on the defense. You can’t shift coverage outside. You have to fi gure out how you want to deal with them. Do you want to cover with a safety, do you want to cover him with a linebacker, do you want to let it go to zone? There are a lot of questions that have to be answered when you are facing guys that can be productive from the tight end spot.”

(On how Ahtyba Rubin has been developing)- “He’s been out-standing, he really has. He’s a big man, so he’s hard to move, but he plays with really good technique and his block recognition has got-ten better over the course of the last year. When you’re that size and as strong as he is and recognizes blocks well, it’s hard to move you. He does an excellent job. I don’t know if you guys saw the other day, a little screen pass, he was running about 60 yards down the fi eld, chasing the screen pass and that’s what you like about him as well. Some big guys may feel there’s about a 10-yard barrier or limit, but he fi nishes the plays and you like that. I like that a lot about him.”

(On Jerome Harrison having a “healthy” chip on his shoulder)- “I’ve always found Jerome to be confi dent, and I like that in Jerome. He believes in himself, he believes in the things that he can do and I think he showed that he can back up that belief in himself. He worked diligently last season to correct the things that we wanted him to correct, and I respect that. We sat down and talked about it, identifi ed some areas where we wanted him to improve and he did that. I look for that same thing this season and he will have some great opportunities to show what he can do.”

(On what Matt Roth’s brought since joining the Browns)- “Matt’s a beast. He is strong, he’s tough, he’s relentless and we had to deal with that in New York when he was in Miami and it was painful to deal with it. When he became available, it’s nice to have him and let other people deal with him. He doesn’t get fazed by anything, he is just going to attack the same way, play-in and play-out and it’s a nice trait and it’s contagious.”

(On if Phil Dawson is showing any signs of slowing down or if he’s getting better with age)- “What I’ve seen is consistency for the time that I’ve been with him and he’s been consistent here through-out this camp as well. I think with Phil, he really understands how to take care of his body, he really understands the things that he needs to do to operate at a high level, at a very effi cient level and he’s con-sistent with it and that’s served him well and will continue to serve him well. That’s what you want anybody to be is to understand, how do I operate the best for me because each guy has a different way to get to that and then to be able to do that play in and play out and season in and season out.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTESLB David Bowens(On if he feels good about this defense)- “I do. Everyone’s smart. The offseason was great, the OTAs and minicamp, all the new peo-ple that are new to this system came in and adjusted relatively fast. We hit training camp full speed. We didn’t have to have any extra meetings. Guys knew what we had to do out of the gate.”

WR Joshua Cribbs(On how excited he is to get on the fi eld)- “We are very excited. Finally, football is back in action. This is a football town and in light of everything that has been going on throughout the year up until football season. We are very excited. I know the fans, they are out here in numbers, they are very excited for the season to kick back off.”

(On why he wanted to play in Cleveland)- “The fans. When any-body asks me about what Cleveland has to offer, they are the most die-hard fans ever. That’s what I tell them. I don’t tell them about the Rock and Roll of Fame, or all those highlights structurally. I tell them about the city, the people of Cleveland and how die-hard they are and how much they’ll fi ght for you in any type of weather.”

QB Jake Delhomme (On dealing with the kind of attention being the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns brings)- “I think that’s the National Football League. When you suit up on Sunday, you are one of 32 in the world. There’s a great deal of, if you want to call it pressure or expectations, but I think there’s a reason that quarterbacks play quarterback. To get to this level, you’ve had to kind of go through that at some point. You embrace it, ‘Okay, this is what I’ve got to do.’ It becomes a pride thing and you want to do well and you want to be the guy to help your team win.”

(On how much is at stake for him during training camp)- “I think the older you get, and this is the approach that I take, that this is my last year, that’s the way I look at it. Next year I’m go-ing to say the same thing. You just don’t know in this league and I think you start to appreciate it more and start to enjoy it because this is a privilege. Yes, training camp, it’s hard and guys complain and what not, but when you look back on it, this is my 14th one. I’ve spent a year of my life in training camp. That’s fun. That’s how I look at it, dive into it, enjoy it and do everything you can because you don’t know in this league. You don’t know and I think when you are younger you take it for granted, ‘Oh yes, let me get through this, I have so many more to go.’ You just have to enjoy it and that’s my approach.”

DB Abram Elam(On if he’s becoming one of the leaders in the secondary)- “I think we have a great group of guys. We have a lot of guys that can take control. I just want to be one that they can count on. Guys come to me with questions and I’m willing to stay after late with the young guys and the veteran guys and get things corrected be-cause we want to try to win ball games here.”

RB Jerome Harrison(On the fi nish they had last year)- “That was a huge fi nish for us. My offensive line dominated across the board, from tight ends all the way to the backside guard. I think as a unit we performed very well and held each other accountable and got into a good groove. I think after these fi rst couple days of practice the offensive line and the tight ends, running backs and the fullback, I think, are ahead of schedule. I think we are on pace and I think we have a real good feel for each other now.”

(On what two really good running backs can do for an offense)- “It’s working in the NFL right now. A lot of teams have gone away from just the feature back and most teams, it’s two backs. It can help, but you also have to understand that James Davis looks good. P-man (Peyton Hillis) looks good. We are loaded, Chris Jennings looks good. At practice we have to take advantage of every oppor-tunity we get because we know whoever is behind us or in front of us is a good back. There’s a lot of competition in our room.”

TE Evan Moore(On how he is approaching camp)- “Just to get better. Last year was actually my rookie year so I wanted to make strides from my fi rst to second year. Most coaches say a lot of your biggest strides come from your fi rst to second year so I wanted to make sure I was doing that and getting better at the things that people said I wasn’t very good at. Pass protection, run game, those are things that I want to continue to get better at to become a more all-around, complete tight end.”

OL Joe Thomas(On if he’s become a leader of the team)- “I feel like that’s hap-pening. Last year, was my fi rst year as a captain. I feel like I’m starting to step up in the locker room and meeting rooms and hope-fully, trying to carry that over for another year and improve on that. Getting with Jake Delhomme and trying to king of get this offense moving in the direction that we want.”

(On his impressions of the Browns’ defensive line)- “I think they are going to be really good. I think they found some guys at the end of last year who maybe, they didn’t know if they could play or not and they came on and they showed they could play in the NFL. They can play well. I think they’ve kind of carried that over to what they are doing in training camp right now. I think we are going to have a pretty good line and a lot of guys. We are going to be really deep.”

TE Ben Watson(On the rapport that he’s developed with Jake Delhomme)- “I feel like everybody, myself included, are starting to get in better sync. There’s still, obviously, some work to go, but that’s why we’re out here in training camp. I think every practice it gets better and better.”

(On if having the Family Day scrimmage was helpful)- “It’s just good work altogether for the offense, the defense and the spe-cial teams. It’s good to work against each other in a game-type atmosphere and have a game-type mentality. Although it was a practice, it gave us a chance to do some things full speed.”
