    CONNECTION

All Are WelcomeBy Rev. Greg Bunton, Associate Minister of Student Ministries

It Isnt Too Late To Help ExtendRADICAL HOSPITALITY

to our Neighbors at Rolling Green Apartments! Can you share an hour or two of your time this Saturday, August 6?

Volunteers are still needed to help work at the Block Party

from 10am to 2pm. If you can help please call Greg Bunton

at 341-3544, ext. 13 or sign up online at www.fccedmond.org/bpvolunteers

    Recently I had

    the privilege of

    spending two

    weeks on the

    road with anincredible group

    of students and

    adult leaders.

We traveled many miles, met many

people, and stayed at many churches. It

was an awesome experience, one I wont

    soon forget.

As we were traveling someone asked

me how many trips I had been on in my

years at FCC. After counting, I determined

this made number 29. And although eachexperience has been unique, they all have

    something in common - Hospitality!

Everywhere we go our host churches

roll out the red carpet for us. On the most

recent trip, we were overwhelmed by

hospitality. We tend to forget that FCC

Edmond is one of the largest Disciple

churches in the country, so to host 42

people would not be a huge task. Yet

many of the churches we stay at are half

the size of ours, or even less! When wearrive, we take over. Every nook and

cranny of their building is suddenly

stuffed with sleeping bags, air mattresses,

    clothes, towels, equipment, food, supplies,

    and people!

    Many churches relocated their daycare

for us so we would have a place to sleep,

others cleared their sanctuaries! We slept

    in hallways, doorways, classrooms, and

sanctuaries. We were given keys to the

buildings and free reign of their space, including kitchens, youth rooms, and

chapels. They would provide dinner for

us, enough to feed an army, which with

teenage boys was a very good thing! And

many churches would provide us with

nighttime snacks or goodie bags to take

with us on the road. They let us borrow

cars when we need to make a quick trip

into town, or they opened their offices s

we might use their computers. They jus

kept giving, and giving, and giving! This is radical hospitality, and it

is one of the five practices of fruitful

congregations that we will be focusing o

in worship during the month of August.

Hospitality is important. In fact, the

ministry of welcoming is high on Jesu

list of absolutes! If First Christian is to b

    fruitful congregation and take seriously

command to Go and make disciples,

must be hospitable. Not only as a churc

but also as individual members of the bof Christ who strive to reach out in our

    daily lives.

All are welcome this Sunday, and

every day, as we gather as the body of

Christ. Come, just as you are, and know

    that you are loved!

What an awesome and joyful experi-ence we had during our June Sundays

    of Table Conversations and Unified

worship! The re:NEW Task Force has

a lot to think about as we reflect on the

stories weve heard and the dreams weve

collected. The stories of how God has

worked in our lives, how our lives have

been touched by each other, and the

    enthusiasm and commitment to ministry

ensure us of an even brighter future!

As we continue our work in thecoming weeks, we want to share an

update on where we are and extend our

    thanks to everyone who participated

    in the June Table Conversations

experience and the April 2 Leadership

Retreat. We are honored to have heard

your stories and ideas and to have

walked this sacred ground with you thus

    far. The collective commitment and

investment in the June conversations a

April retreat encourage and enliven us

We invite your prayers as we continue

    re:NEW!

With joy and anticipation, The ReNEW

Task Force: Larry Ball & Billy Harrison,

    So whats next?

The re:NEW task force will continue reviewing the life-giving themes and dreams which have shown themselvesprominent during both the June Table Conversations and the April 2 Leadership Retreat.

We will publish a summar document entitled Themes and Dreams in August. This document will put into words thethemes that accurately portray this congregations unique spiritual imprint and the dreams which emerged during ourre:NEW Sundays. The Themes and Dreams document will be shared with each household, published on our website andmade available at the church.

Asermon series in August will be developed by Rev. Greg Bunton and Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, along with Dr. Gary Peluso-Verdand as guest on August 21. This series will celebrate the themes which have emerged and will help us see how thesethemes are linked to practices of vital, healthy, fruitful congregations.

We will continue to work with our consultant, Dr. Gary Peluso-Verdand, weaving together the common threads found inthe stories, ideas and dreams for our future, and begin exploring innovative ways we can begin to co-create the future Godhas in store for First Christian.

On Sunday, September 4 the re:NEW Task Force will plan and lead a unied worship experience for Laity Sunday. On thaday we will share some of our ndings, and stories of some of the dreams for our future. Our September 4 morningschedule will be: 9:30am Sunday School for all ages, 10:45am Unied Worship.
