Presidents Welcome As President of the Australian Over 60’s Cricket Association it gives me great pleasure to invite players from all over Australia and NZ to participate in the National Championships, held for the first time in Adelaide, my home city. I invite you to play in a high level of competition as well as enjoy the beautiful environment Adelaide has to offer. The National body in conjunction with Cricket Australia and the parent bodies of each state is committed to growing the game at this level and extend a special warm welcome to the Western Australian players who are representing their state for the first time in this National Championship. We hope that they will attend in all future national events. The Championship week is about playing competitive cricket and demonstrating that being over 60 or 70 is not a barrier to participating in a healthy sporting activity. In addition to playing cricket the week provides the opportunity to catch up with old friends, relive past glories and make new friendships. While visiting Adelaide I would encourage all of you to take time to enjoy the delights of this wonderful city and its surroundings. The Organising Committee has provided information for you to visit the beautiful Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Victor Harbor and the Adelaide Hills, just to mention a few places that will captivate you. On behalf of the Australian Over 60’s Management Committee I would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by the Adelaide 2012 Committee and wish all of you the very best for the week ahead.

Welcome Message from Cricket Australia Cricket Australia is proud to support the 7th National Over 60’s Championship to be held in Adelaide in November 2012. This competition will provide Over 60’s cricketers with the opportunity to play in a National Carnival and will see 29 teams from across Australia, plus one from New Zealand , to do battle in the four Divisions. As well as the 300+ participants, it is anticipated that more than 200 family members will also support the event. Cricket’s vision is to be Australia’s favourite sport, with a goal of ensuring that cricket is inclusive and available to players at all levels from grassroots to elite. Australian cricket is dedicated to supporting the development of Over 60’s Cricket, and sees it as an important part of keeping cricketers engaged in the game throughout their lives. Congratulations to the organisers for having the vision to establish this carnival, and to the participants for helping this tremendous initiative continue to grow. Thanks also go to the South Australian Over 60’s and the South Australian Cricket Association for hosting this event, and for their great support of Over 60’s cricket. To the players and umpires who have been selected to represent your respective States and Territories it is a rare opportunity to play or officiate at a National Carnival, and we wish you all well in Adelaide. I am sure that the cricket will be played hard and fair and in the spirit of the game. Long live cricket!

Mayor’s Welcome The City of Marion is proud to welcome cricketers, their friends, families and supporters to the 7th National Over 60s Cricket Championships. It is very exciting to play host to teams from throughout Australia and New Zealand

Marion is a city measuring 55 sq km with a population of about 85,000 people located 10 km south-west of Adelaide. It offers a lot to visitors and we hope you have time between games to explore it.

You have picked a great time to visit our city as we are also hosting Rescue 2012, the Life Saving World Championships, at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, so you will see plenty of other visitors from around Australia and the world.

Adjacent to the aquatic centre you will find the Marion Cultural Centre which has a wonderful library, art gallery, café and theatre for wonderful entertainment. You will also see Westfield Marion Shopping Centre with an enormous choice of retail outlets and a huge cinema complex.

If you would like a walk with spectacular coastal views, I highly recommend the Coastal Walking Trail which runs for 7.2 km from Marino in the north to Hallett Headland Reserve in the south.

The Living Kaurna Cultural Centre is located in the beautiful setting of Warriparinga and provides a unique opportunity to learn about Kaurna culture.

Colonial settlement in the 1830s also forms part of the city’s past and you can learn about it at Marion Historic Village which features a walk with interpretive signs, community art and a display centre.

I welcome all competitors and supporters on behalf of the City of Marion, and hope you enjoy the cricket and your time in our city.

Patron’s Welcome Welcome to all the Over 60s and in some cases Over 70s players to the Adelaide Championships. Some of you have travelled great distances and from overseas to be here and we wish you all the best during your stay. We in South Australia are proud to be hosting this event and are really pleased that you have made the time available to visit our state and participate in this event. I am sure the games will be played in the usual great spirit and the social events after the game will be celebrated with equal enthusiasm. The Committee has worked exceptionally hard to make sure that all is in place for a great week of cricket and activities. Congratulations to all the Sporting Clubs, Volunteers and Sponsors who have generously made their time and resources available in what is not an easy economic climate for them to operate. This week is a time to renew old friendships and make new ones that will be lasting and contribute to the harmonious growth of the Over 60s fraternity. I wish you all an enjoyable week with fair weather and an injury free playing time. Congratulations to all of you on your willingness to participate.

RULES OF THE AUSTRALIAN OVER 60’s CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS – ADELAIDE SA 2012

The Spirit of Cricket is expected to be observed at all times.

‘Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact it should be played not only within

its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse the spirit causes

injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with

captains.’ (MCC Laws 2003)

Culture of the Tournament Whilst the structure of the championship provides a competitive

approach, the organisers believe this should not result in overcompetiveness or overshadow the

tournament’s main purpose, i.e. to provide an opportunity for cricketers of all standards to continue

to participate in a sport we all love.

1. The Laws of Cricket apply except for variations mentioned herein.

2. Team List Before the toss captains will exchange team lists of up to 12 players, one player being

nominated as the designated bowler and cannot bat.

3. Age To Play In any game a player must be at least 60 years old on the day of that game.

4. Umpires Two official umpires are to be allocated to each match wherever possible. If only one

official umpire is available, he is to stand at each bowling end. If no official umpire(s) are

available then both captains shall agree on non-official umpire(s). After consulting both

captains, umpires have the final say on whether play will start, continue, resume or cease due to

rain, unsafe ground conditions or extreme heat. When heavy rain is imminent or when lightning

is approaching, umpires should use their discretion to ensure covers (when available) are

installed promptly on turf pitches if play must cease. ( See Rule 23)

5. Competition Structure There will be 4 divisions. Each team will play 4 games weather

permitting, and the team with the highest points in each division will be the winner of that

division.

6. Competition Points/Placing In determining the placing of teams in each division, competition

points from each match will be allocated on the basis of 4 for a win, 2 for a tie, 1 for a draw and

nil for a loss. Should both teams complete their innings with the same number of runs, the result

is a tie regardless of the number of wickets lost by each team.

The placing for teams’ level on points will be decided by calculating the wickets/runs quotient

for each team. The team with the higher quotient will finish ahead. The quotient is to be

calculated as follows:

(a) Total runs scored divided by total wickets lost.

(b) Total runs scored by opposition teams divided by total wickets taken.

(c) Divide (a) by (b) to determine the team quotient.

7. Players Only eleven fielders can be on the field at any one time, and only eleven players can

bat. Fielders may rotate at any time, after notifying the nearest umpire.

8. Commencement Time Each Match is to commence at 10.00 am unless there has been a prior

arrangement with the Championship Coordinator. (See Rules 19 and 20 for match starts delayed

RULES OF THE AUSTRALIAN OVER 60’s CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS – ADELAIDE SA 2012 The Spirit of Cricket is expected to be observed at all times. ‘Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse the spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with captains.’ (MCC Laws 2003) Culture of the Tournament Whilst the structure of the championship provides a competitive approach, the organisers believe this should not result in overcompetiveness or overshadow the tournament’s main purpose, i.e. to provide an opportunity for cricketers of all standards to continue to participate in a sport we all love. The Laws of Cricket apply except for variations mentioned herein. Team List Before the toss captains will exchange team lists of all players. Age To play in any game a player must be at least 60 years old on the day of that game. Umpires Two official umpires are to be allocated to each match wherever possible. If only one official umpire is available, he is to stand at each bowling end. If no official umpire(s) are available then both captains shall agree on non-official umpire(s). After consulting both captains, umpires have the final say on whether play will start, continue, resume or cease due to rain, unsafe ground conditions or extreme heat. When heavy rain is imminent or when lightning is approaching, umpires should use their discretion to ensure covers (when available) are installed promptly on turf pitches if play must cease. ( See Rule 23) Competition Structure There will be 4 divisions. Each team will play 4 games weather permitting, and the team with the highest points in each division will be the winner of that division. Competition Points/Placing In determining the placing of teams in each division, competition points from each match will be allocated on the basis of 4 for a win, 2 for a tie, 1 for a draw and nil for a loss. Should both teams complete their innings with the same number of runs, the result is a tie regardless of the number of wickets lost by each team. The placing for teams’ level on points will be decided by calculating the wickets/runs quotient for each team. The team with the higher quotient will finish ahead. The quotient is to be calculated as follows: (a) Total runs scored divided by total wickets lost. (b) Total runs scored by opposition teams divided by total wickets taken. (c) Divide (a) by (b) to determine the team quotient. Players Only eleven fielders can be on the field at any one time, and only eleven players can bat. Fielders may rotate at any time, after notifying the nearest umpire. Commencement Time Each Match is to commence at 10.00 am unless there has been a prior arrangement with the Championship Coordinator. (See Rules 19 and 20 for match starts delayed beyond 10.00 am due to inclement weather.) Finishing Time All matches must be completed by 6.00 pm. If games are not completed by that time they will be considered a draw. Innings Each Innings is to be a maximum of 40 overs per team. If inclement weather is anticipated, the Championship Coordinator may decide to vary the innings structure of each game to 2 x 20 overs innings alternating for each team. In such an event, each innings is to be played until 10 wickets have fallen or until all available overs are bowled, up to a maximum of 40 overs. Drinks Breaks can be taken at agreed intervals, with reference to the prevailing temperature. Extra drinks for batsman can be supplied between overs if so requested.

9. Finishing Time All matches must be completed by 6.00 pm. If games are not completed by that

time they will be considered a draw.

10. Innings Each Innings is to be a maximum of 40 overs per team. If inclement weather is

anticipated, the Championship Coordinator may decide to vary the innings structure of each

game to 2 x 20 overs innings alternating for each team. In such an event, each innings is to be

played until 10 wickets have fallen or until all available overs are bowled, up to a maximum of 40

overs.

11. Drinks Breaks can be taken at agreed intervals, with reference to the prevailing temperature.

Extra drinks for batsman can be supplied between overs if so requested.

12. The Lunch Interval should normally start once the first 40 overs have been bowled or on the

completion of first innings after an interruption. The duration can vary from 30 to 45 minutes by

agreement.

13. Retirements Batsmen must retire on the stroke scoring 35 runs and are not eligible for return.

Any batsman retiring due to genuine injury or illness, with the umpire’s agreement, before

scoring 35 runs can return to continue his innings as per normal retiring hurt rules. Captains are

reminded that in the interest of positive cricket they have the discretion to retire batsmen, and

such batsmen may not be returned.

14. Bowlers A minimum of 7 bowlers must be used in each completed innings. All bowlers are to be

restricted to a maximum of 6 overs each (See Rule 20 for modifications to this rule)

15. A No-Ball is to be called for any delivery that lands or bounces off the prepared turf or synthetic

pitch in. front of the batsman.

16. Unfair Deliveries An Unfair Delivery is:

(a) any delivery that clearly passes above the batsman’s shoulder as judged from where the

batsman takes his stance as if he had been standing erect.

(b) any full-toss delivery that clearly arrives or would have arrived above waist height for a fast

bowler and shoulder height for a slow bowler, as judged from where the batsman takes his

stance as if he had been standing erect.

Either the umpire at the bowler’s end or the square leg umpire is to instantly call and signal no-

ball for any unfair deliveries.

17. A Wide is to be called for any delivery that

(a) passes outside the off-side 75cm marking, even if the batsman moves across to place the ball

within reach but does not offer a stroke.

(b) passes outside the leg-side 75cm marking.

18. Ovals, Clothing and Equipment

(a) Only coloured or white team shirts and white trousers are permitted.

(b) Only red four piece balls supplied by the Championship organisers will be used in matches.

(c) Each team will be required to provide 3 approved stumps and a set of bails for use.

(d) The Oval playing size is to be measured to a maximum 50 metre half circle from the stumps

at each end to form the ends, and then joined by straight boundaries on the off and on sides

19. Playing Time–Delayed Matches Provided play commences no later than 11.30am, each innings

should still be 40 overs per team, with a maximum of 30 minutes lunch break. Where play cannot

begin until after 11.30am, each team’s innings is to be reduced by one over for every 7.5 minutes

lost beyond 11.30am, with a maximum of 30 minutes lunch break . For the result to count, each

team must bat a minimum of 20 overs; otherwise the result will be deemed a draw.

20. Bowler Numbers When over numbers are reduced before play commences in accordance with

Rule 19 or as directed by the Championship Coordinator, a minimum of 7 bowlers must still be

used by both teams with the maximum number of 6 overs per bowler being reduced by one over

for every separate 7 over reduction in the total innings. For example, for a reduction of 8 overs to

an innings of 32 overs, the maximum per bowler will be 5 overs; a reduction of 20 overs will result

in a maximum of 3 overs per bowler.

21. Adverse Weather During adverse weather conditions, the aim is to provide maximum playing

time wherever possible without endangering individual safety.

22. Available Pitch Covers are to be used as required. During play, the batting team is responsible for

speedy delivery of the covers when rain is imminent, and both teams must assist with the

covering. Both teams must also assist with removal of the covers and any required overnight

covering.

23. Lightning Rule Umpires must call for play to cease once they are satisfied that thunder is heard

less than thirty seconds after its related lightning flash. Once play ceases at one oval, play must

cease on all adjoining ovals. Covers should not be placed if umpires are obliged to halt play due to

lightning even if rain is expected. Nobody is to be on the oval while the lightning rule is in effect.

24. Backup Synthetic Pitches are to be used whenever play on a turf pitch is unlikely to commence

before 11.30am. If rain or unsafe ground conditions prevent any match which commenced on turf

from being fully played out, it may be completely restarted on the alternate Synthetic Pitch,

provided less than 20 overs of the first team’s innings have been bowled. The restarted game will

be reduced to 20 overs for each team’s innings. If more than 20 overs have been bowled, the

match shall not be restarted and will be called a draw. If the game cannot be restarted, and if the

captains agree, with the approval of the umpire(s) teams may play a reduced over non

Championship game.

25. Match Results The winning captain, or in the case of a draw or tie the captain who won the toss,

is to complete a results sheet and ensure the information is delivered to Jan McTier, the Carnival

Statistics Recorder, phone 08 8298 1949 or email [email protected], no later than 7.30 pm

that same day.

26. Target Score Calculations Where overs need to be reduced for either or both teams, target scores

are to be calculated by reference to the Target Score Calculation tables below. The results will be

deemed a draw if either team is unable to bat for minimum of 20 overs.

When the team batting first has completed 40 overs and the second team has overs reduced, the target score is calculated by removing the following overs from the first teams innings and by adding 1 run to the remaining total.

There must be a minimum of 20 overs scheduled for each team to constitute a match.

Example: When the team batting first has batted 40 overs, and the second team is reduced to 32 overs, to determine the target score for the team batting second, remove overs 13, 32, 14, 31, 15, 30, 16 & 29 from the total of the first team plus add one run.

When the team batting first has had its overs reduced and the team batting second has further reductions, the target score shall be calculated by removing the following overs from the first teams innings and adding one run to the remaining total.
