Global demand for methanol to reach 122.6 million tons in 2020Posted on : 03 May, 2012

A recent report by GBI research suggested that with the large interest in biofuels and biobased raw materials in recent times, Asianmarkets, especially China and the Middle East might become the centre of the methanol economy. It also revealed that the boomingmethanol market will generate huge revenues for the Asian and Middle Eastern economies. 2010 studies also showed that 64% of theglobal methanol demand arose from the Asia-Pacific region. Current analysis estimate that almost 25% of the global methanol demandcame from applications in the energy sector. The global methanol demand stands at 44.9 million tons per year. With the advantage of relatively low operating costs, a number of methanol players are setting up operations in China. If suchdevelopments keep up, it could mean that the country may become the leading methanol market very soon. The Middle East has also emerged as a rival in the methanol industry with its availability of low cost natural gas feedstock, which in turnpermits cost-effective methanol production. The recent increase in capacity additions could result in increased exports, thus providing stiffcompetition in the industry. Due to cost advantages over traditional crude oil based naptha-cracking, GBI expects a huge demand for MTO/MTP in the future. Theglobal demand for methanol in 2020 is expected to reach 122.6 million tons. Such is the current scenario in the industry. MEO Australia expecting 100% pre-sale of methanol from Timor Sea projectPosted on : 18 Apr, 2012

MEO Australia, an oil and gas explorer recently said that big industry players have formally conveyed an interest to purchase methanolfrom its Tassie Shoal project, owing to the forecasted spike in the demand for methanol as fuel replacement. Customarily, methanol is used as a primary feedstock in the chemical industry. A point of note is that carbon dioxide can be retained inthe production of methanol, unlike the necessity to have it stripped in the production of liquefied natural gas. Chief Executive Jurgen Hendrich stated that the strong expressions of interest received from highly credible customers were extremelyencouraging. As per the company’s reports, 100% of the Tassie Shoal Methanol Plant output could be pre-sold judging by the currentindicated demand from potential customers. China Test Drives Methanol-Fuelled CarsPosted on : 13 Mar, 2012

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) has decided to conduct testing methanol-powered cars in Shaanxiprovince, Shanxi province and Shanghai effective March 2012 and evaluation period could last two to three years. According tocalculations by the Methanol Institute, methanol is still cheaper than gas. Methanol, the greener option is proving to be a promising alternative fuel. Tangshan, China to pilot the use of M15 methanol gasolinePosted on : 13 Feb, 2012

China’s Hebei province plans to make Tangshan as the pilot city for the supply of M15 methanol gasoline. Anticipated to start supply inJune 2012 with 200,000 tonne/unit, the government may even consider replacing ethanol gasoline, methanol prices being lower thanethanol. According to industry reports China's methanol gasoline consumption was estimated to about 2m tonnes in 2011. Asian methanol market is poised to demonstrate robust growth in the coming years. Moreover, the huge opportunities in the Asia-Pacificmarket, especially led by the Chinese demand are expected to fuel the market growth. AzMeCo facility in Azerbaijan to export 90% methanolPosted on : 09 Jan, 2012

The construction of methanol plant in Azerbaijan is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Nizami Piriyev, President ofAzMeCo (Azerbaijan Methanol Company) noted that the 90% of plant’s output will be directed for export, but there are plans to usemethanol as raw material for several new businesses to promote the use of methanol in the country. The overall value of the project isestimated to be over $400 million. Production is scheduled to begin in April and reach its full capacity of 560,000 tons in June 2012.Reportedly, Azerbaijan’s methanol production will increase by 720,000 tons per year. AzMeCo is the sole methanol plant in Azerbaijanand also the only one in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
