Well, lets face it, nobody likes a problem. Yet, we always deal withproblems in math. To me, math problems are not negative things.

They are opportunities to learn and grow. But, thats not so exciting tosay. So, we call them gummy bears. Like math, there is a large variety ofgummy bears out there. Also, as with gummy bears, problems can besticky and sometimes you get one that is just hard to chew. But, when you

get through it, the reward is sweet!

    1) Solving Algebraic EquationsExplanation: When we have a number in an equation that we dont know, we put a letter in its place. We callthis a variable. In an Algebraic Equation, we have to find the value of that variable. Students will be using this

skill to solve gummy bears throughout all future math classes.

    Examples:

    3x = 12 2 + x = 15 y 9 = -1 5z + 19 = 29 -3p 2 = 9

    3) Adding and Subtracting IntegersExplanation: Seventh-graders venture deeply into the negative realm and its important for them to

understand how to navigate (add/subtract) on the negative side of the number line. Negative numbers will

be used throughout the remainder of their lives!

    4) Deep DivisionExplanation: Traditionally known as long division, this method of division is often a source of anxiety forstudents. Lets face it, calling it LONG division definitely doesnt make it sound interesting, and then there

are several steps to remember. It involves subtraction, multiplication, and division all in one method. Just

typing about it is tiring! But, despite all of these things, it IS a very effective way to divide!

    5) Circumference & Area of CirclesExplanation: Seventh-graders explore the circumference and area of circles. Circumference is the measure ofthe outside of the circle, like the perimeter of a square. The area is the measure of the inside of the circle, or

how much space it takes up.

    Examples:

    KEY: C = Circumference A = Area r = radius d = diameter = 3.14

The circumference of a circle is calculated using this formula:

    or

    6) Central TendencyExplanation: A measure of central tendency is a measure that tells us where the middleof a bunch of data lies. The three most common measures of central tendency are the

mean, the median, and the mode.

    Examples: 55, 34, 35, 34, 57, 78, 106 34, 34, 35, 55, 57, 78, 106

    Mean (average): 55+34+35+34+57+78+106=399 399/7=57

    Median (middle number): 34, 34, 35, 55, 57, 78, 106

    Mode (most occurring): 34
