Goals of the Session

➢ To show the progression of TEKS and instructional

activities from concrete to pictorial to the abstract

➢To model instructional tasks that incorporate

concrete, pictorial, and abstract activities

What does the research say?

• The Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach has

is very effective with students who have difficulty with math

• Through activities, students use manipulatives and experiences

to construct their own knowledge and make meaning of abstract

math concepts

• Students communicate and share their understanding using

concrete and pictorial representations

• The role of the teacher is to facilitate the students understanding

by providing appropriate scaffolding and feedback.
