FROM THE RECTOR 7 September 2014 Dear Friends, Today’s gospel deals with fraternal correction among Christians. The community of Christ is not to behave like an ordinary tribunal; the tribunal punishes the one who admits his guilt and condemns him; the Christian community looks beyond justice to mercy, in order to absolve and reconcile. Even when the sinner persisted in his error, the Church would keep him in her prayers. The presence within it of Emmanuel (God with us), who intercedes for the Church—that it may be holy and that it may be one—is the heart and basis of the Church’s prayer. The Church makes Christ’s prayer her own. This explains her sense of responsibility towards others, which overcomes any feelings of resentment. With every blessing,

Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Happy Father’s Day to all fathers worshipping at St John’s today.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The anthem 'Draw nigh' is a communion antiphon set to the plainsong tune 'Adoro Te' named after the text usually associated with this tune 'Adoro te devote' by St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). The voluntary is by the Belgium composer Jacob-Nicolaus Lemmens (1823-1881). Aged only 26 Lemmens became organ professor at the Royal Brussels Conservatoire, where he trained two distinguished French organists of the next generation Alexandre Guilmant (1873-1911) and Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937). This energetic Fanfare is characteristic of his accessible melodic and rhythmic style.

Pins’n’Needles – Reminder: Next meetings Tuesdays 9 September and 23 September, usual time and place.

Mothers' Union: On Wednesday 17 September our Mothers' Union branch will have Suzanne Reimer as the guest speaker. Suzanne is a Diocesan Vice President responsible for our region. We have some of our group who will be away so are keen to invite any ladies in the parish who would like to attend. Men are also welcome if they would like to come and hear more about the work of MU. The meeting starts at 11.30am after the healing service. Members please bring something to share for lunch. Numbers to Deacon Sandra by Monday Sept 15th. For more information please contact Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters.

Rosters – Rosters – Rosters!!! With rosters for September to January now being prepared, all who can help are welcome. For BOTH Sunday morning services (8:00am and 10:00am) we REALLY NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS to serve morning tea and to act as sidespersons. As well, the Grounds, Brass and Cleaning rosters are in desperate need of new volunteers. If you can help with any of these tasks please contact Bev (99715529) or [email protected] or leave a message with Beck at the Office.

Direct Credit Offerings: Some Parishioners have been asking about or considering making their regular offerings by Direct Credit. It is easy to do: the basic instruction to give to your Bank/Credit Union is to “transfer to St Johns Anglican Church Dee Why BSB 032 094 Account Number 81-0026 the amount of $xyz on the xxth of each month”. You can tell the bank what you want to appear on the Church’s statement (e.g. your name). Some Banks charge a small fee but most Credit Unions do not. It is easy and can be set to operate until cancelled. If you wish to place something in the plate as it goes by during the collection, we have on the book trolley in the Church “offering cards” that you can use, stating that your offering is given by Direct Credit. For further advice about giving via Direct Credit please refer to any Warden or to the Treasurer, Dudley Johnson.

Casseroles: Thank you to everyone who has been supplying food for those in need. We now have sufficient meals until further notice. Frozen meals are available to all in need, including parishioners who may be unwell or unable to get out. For information, please speak with Robyn Couch or Lynette Johnson. Readers: New reading sheets for 21 September to 5 October 2014 are available for collection. If rostered, please take your readings from the lobby table. If your reading sheet has not been put out, please leave a message with the office. Happy Birthday: Grace Mackay (7th), Chas Coward (9th).

To defibrillate (dɪˈfɪbrɪˌleɪt) means “to stop abnormal rhythm of the heart and restore it usually by administering an electric charge”. Parish Council has considered that in the event of a cardiac arrest by a parishioner or visitor on the premises, it might be useful to have a defibrillator unit installed in the hope that someone was on hand, able and willing to use it. As such devices are readily available, increasingly common, reliable and easily used, having one in the parish centre became a sensible initiative. With this in mind, the Parish Council has accepted the supply by Couch & Associates Pty Ltd (Robyn and Graeme’s business), and installation by Tony Johnson, of a defibrillator unit purchased under the St John’s Ambulance “Defib-for-Life” program. Initial briefing on its use has been given; it is proposed to schedule a further briefing in the future so that ministry leaders who have not yet been briefed, and any who are interested in or have familiarity with first aid can acquaint themselves with the operation of the unit. To register interest, please contact the Parish Office over the next two weeks. Please understand that we are not expecting first aiders to be rostered or "on duty" at church services or other events.

Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club on 15-18 September (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit. The Anglicans Together Dinner on Thursday 25 September, 7:00 for 7:30pm at City Tattersalls Club (Cnr Pitt and Market Streets, Sydney), will feature guest speaker Archbishop Glenn Davies, talking about his vision for the Diocese of Sydney. Cost: $65 pp ($60 conc). Payments with bookings by 18 September to: Anglicans Together, Level 1 St James’ Hall, 169-171 Phillip Street, Sydney, 2000 (telephone 8227 1300). Please see the noticeboard or take a flyer if interested.
