  • SUNDAY OF THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS DECEMBER 27, 2020 & JANUARY 3, 2021

    Fr. Gordon

    From Fr. Gordon

It is so appropriate that Christmas

is followed up by the Feast of the

    Holy Family, celebrating the home

life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The

Word of God became flesh so as to

be one with us in all things but sin

and to eternally connect our human family to God.

For this reason, the Church refers to the family as the

domestic church, a school of life, love, prayer and

    faith.

Sunday, December 27, is also the Feast of St. John the

Evangelist. This means that the Holy Family will be

celebrated at the St. Thomas liturgies and St. John will

be celebrated at the St. Johns liturgies as a patronal

feast day this final weekend of December!

The first weekend of January is our celebration of

Epiphany and the coming of the Magi. In this event,

we see a symbol of the coming of the gentile nations

to Christ, and we are reminded to lay down our gifts

before the Lord so that we may serve him faithfully in all aspects of life. We have all been given so very

    much.

As we hope to move beyond the pandemic in 2021,

let us as a parish make it a priority to reach out to

one another and reconnect. Some parishioners

haven’t been to church since last March, and we miss

you greatly! Certainly the parish staff members are

working hard to step up our communications,

livestreams, videos, newsletters and other forms of

outreach, but let us all look for simple ways to

connect to our neighbors, friends and fellow

parishioners in the hopes of gathering the flock and

emerging from this pandemic with a renewed sense of

unity in Christ. This will certainly be a priority for

2021, so let us offer our fasting and prayers to

accomplish this great work of healing and renewal.

Like the Magi, may we seek the Lord and find the gift

    of Jesus in one another.

Last Sunday, I spoke about “Rejoicing in the Holy Spirit”

and quoted a Greek Orthodox Metropolitan, Ignatius

of Latakia, who addressed the World Council of

Churches in 1968. Here is an excerpt for your

reflection on the uniting power of the Spirit in our lives:

    Without the Holy Spirit:

    God is far away,

    Christ stays in the past,

the Gospel is a dead letter,

the Church simply an organization, authority a form of domination,

    mission a matter of propaganda,

the liturgy no more than an evocation of events

    long ago,

    Christian living a slave morality.

    But in the Holy Spirit:

the cosmos is resurrected and groans with the

    birth-pangs of the kingdom,

the risen Christ is present among us now,

the Gospel becomes the power of life,

the Church shows forth the life of the Trinity,

    authority becomes liberating service,

    mission is Pentecost,

the liturgy is both living memorial of Christ’s

saving work now and anticipation of our future

    worship in heaven,

while human action is deified and joins God’s

    action to redeem the world.

May God bless us and keep us united this New Year!

Prayers for PriestsJanuary calendar is available.

Lord, give us holy priests; You

    Yourself maintain them

in holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the

power of Your mercy accompany them everywhere

and protect them from the devil’s snares which are

continually being set for the souls of priests. ~ St. Faustina

    MATCHED GIVING THANK YOU

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our

matched giving campaign to try an end the year on budget. First a huge thank you to the donors who

stepped forward to pledge the matching funds. Thank

you also to the additional donors who were inspired

to also step up raising our matched total.

The campaign has been wildly successful thanks to so

many parishioners stepping up with gifts big or small.

Together, we can accomplish great things!

What is truly amazing is that this campaign came on

the heels of two other important fund raising efforts

this fall. First, there was Building on Blessings, a

twist on our annual fundraiser to support the Parish

School. The cost of educating our children at STA

isn't covered by tuition alone. Our parish covers a

significant portion each year and, through fundraising,

we are able to cover gaps in the budget. Second, was

Elevate Us, a campaign to raise the funds needed to

replace the defunct elevator at St. John. Due to it’s

age, it was no longer feasible to repair the elevator

and replacement work starts in January!

Final numbers will be reported in the bulletin for

January 10. Thank you so much from the priests and

    staff, and your fellow parishioners!!

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you or is someone you know interested in learning about the Catholic Church? A new group of inquirers will begin meeting at St. John, Sunday, Jan. 17, 2:00 - 3:30 pm. If we can meet in person, it will be at St. John Church and Student Center/ For those who prefer, there will be an online option.

Participants will be asking basic questions about certain beliefs and customs of Catholics. The sessions will consider topics such as "is there a God?", "how can I have a relationship with God?", "why is Mary so important to Catholics?", "who are the saints?"

You are welcome to attend with a friend or alone. Participants include undergrads, grad students, year-round residents, and people of various ages. The sessions aim to answer your questions with conversation, and hospitality. If you or someone you know has been thinking about learning more about the Catholic Faith, contact Pete at 517-351-5460, or [email protected].

If you are already a Catholic, and would like to share your faith by being an RCIA sponsor for one of the candidates, contact Pete. With the growing number of people beginning the RCIA process, additional help is needed as the East Lansing Catholic Community continues to reach out to the people in our area.

Sanctity of Human Life SundayJanuary 17, 2021

On January 13, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued

a proclamation designating January 22 as the first

National Sanctity of Human Life Day. (January 22,

1973, was the day the U.S. Supreme Court legalized

abortion-on-demand in all 50 states.) Churches

around the United States use the day to celebrate

God's gift of life, commemorate the many lives lost to

abortion, and commit themselves to protecting

human life at every stage. We continue to recognize

the third Sunday in January as Sanctity of Human Life
